Car parking costs at work out of control

Notmorewashing · 29/08/2018 20:20

Parking at work now costs us £3.10 per day. If we park in free public carpark it adds 45mins to journey time. Would you just pay up to save a bit more time on commute and kids dinner rush Hell??

At my base office parking was £18 a day (8 hours, if you stated longer it cost even more), it was £3.50 to use the park and ride which added 45-30 minutes to each single journey. £3.10 to be walking distance to my office would've been a dream

maddening · 30/08/2018 00:28

Arrange to meet coworkers at free car park and then progress in one car and pay one fee split between you all.

maddening · 30/08/2018 00:30

Stripped - it also cost petrol and other car running expenses

RuleBreaker · 30/08/2018 00:31

Do your maths again @hidinginthenightgarden 😂

VelvetSpoon · 30/08/2018 01:00

It's all relative but to me that doesn't sound too much and I'd say it was definitely worth saving the extra time.

My journey to work involves me parking over 1.5 miles from work and then getting the bus there and back. Or train 1 stop (total cost £4.50 max). We don't have office parking. I can park a 10 min walk from the office for £8 a day. A new car park is opening soon next to our office soon, that will be £10 a day but we get 10% discount...

I'd love to park for under £5 a day!

EmUntitled · 30/08/2018 01:10

You say it is "now" £3.10. How much wqs it before?

zebrarobot · 30/08/2018 01:24

We have a free car park at work thankfully. When I worked in a fast food place inside a shopping centre as a student I had to pay about £4 a day which I thought was a fortune! I ended up finding a free area to park with a 10 minute walk.
When I was a student going to uni in the city centre thought, that was a whole other kettle of fish! Extortion! Or it felt like it anyway ha.
Im always surprised by these threads as it shows how much these things vary around the country.

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/08/2018 01:32

Seriously cheap

safariboot · 30/08/2018 01:55

If it's a commercial car park, unrelated to your employer, then £3.10 for a day is pretty cheap jist about anywhere I think.

But if your employer owns the car park I can understand being annoyed by the charge, it's basically a stealth pay cut.

Twotabbycats · 30/08/2018 02:03

Blimey. 15 years ago I paid £10 a day to park on the street. Train + train + bus was cheaper but less reliable. Yes I would pay. Anything that makes your life a bit easier is worth it.

Notmorewashing · 30/08/2018 06:16

My employer owns the car park contract it is based on site but not managed by the employer.

45 mins walk each way for the free parking.

Commute is 25/30 miles each way.

No train option.

Itsatravesty · 30/08/2018 06:29

That is really cheap. It's £3 an hour at my work! I park a 20min walk away instead. I would be over the moon to have on site parking at £3 a day.

WrongKindOfFace · 30/08/2018 06:33

As a total cost it is quite high, particularly if you don’t earn that much. I suppose the only solutions are to try and car share, or look for work with a shorter commute?

FishesThatFly · 30/08/2018 06:41

Is there anyone nearby who hires out their drive that you could use? Might work out cheaper if you do a longterm booking

Paradyning · 30/08/2018 06:43

If you look be that far from work you have to factor in travel costs as part of the deal.
£3:10'is reasonable.

Paradyning · 30/08/2018 06:43

Fucksake. If you live that far from work

Ethylred · 30/08/2018 06:47

Stop your moaning. You're paying far too little.

user1471426142 · 30/08/2018 06:58

I’m afraid I’m another voice saying £3.10 is pretty good. I was paying £5.50 a day for station parking (have now found one that is £4.50 with a short walk) but if I went from my closest big town it would be closer to £15 per day which really is extortionate.

SocksRock · 30/08/2018 06:59

I use a P&R which works out as £4.50. Would be very happy with £3.10

Fatted · 30/08/2018 07:04

Another annoying voice saying that for city centre all day parking that's cheap. Best one by us is about a fiver. You could probably park in the town where I live all day for less than that but it really is the arse crack of nowhere!

I used to travel that far for work so know how annoying it is. I'm in the process of moving jobs now to be nearer home. And thankfully parking is free cos it's not city centre.

cloudtree · 30/08/2018 07:07

That's irrelevant really. In all likelihood they have assessed and set the cost at a level to ensure that not everyone brings a car. Otherwise they'll have complaints about people not being able to get a parking space. Just working with a client who is doing exactly this since the provision of free parking was causing significant problems for them.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 30/08/2018 07:24

I pay £5400 yearly travelcard into London just to get to work. Yes. That's 5 thousand....

I know it's all relative but £3.10 sounds like a real bargain to me

PookieNoodlin · 30/08/2018 07:38

I pay £3.30 and have a 10-15 mins walk. If I started earlier I could get a free space but not prepared to get to work 2 hours early for the sake of 3 quid. Much more convenient and cheaper than public transport so I can’t moan.

Used to be able to park a 2 minute walk away for £2.50 about 3-4 years ago, this was heavily discounted and should have been about £25 per day at full price, but has gradually has gone up and is now about £7 at the discounted price.

AlexaShutUp · 30/08/2018 07:55

Parking isn't charged on a percentage or your wage though

It is where I work.Grin And as a senior manager, the rates on my old car were astronomical. However, the rate also varies according to emissions, and as my new car is very environmentally friendly, I now pay £0!
