To keep a handbag I’ve found?

So on my walk this morning I found a Primark handbag in an alleyway. It’s clearly brand new but without tags. There’s nothing in it and it doesn’t look like it has been used at all.
It’s still there now, AIBU to take it? It’s really nice!

Some people are happy to take things that don't belong to them, some people are not. It's up to you OP. If you can work out a way to get the back then I suppose you'll take it.

I wouldn't. (No 'pearl clutching' , I just wouldn't take it).

ProfessorMoody · 24/08/2018 09:15

RoseWhiteTips - why can't a nice bag be from Primark? Are you one of those people who thinks nice things can't be cheap?

FlapAttack23 · 24/08/2018 09:18

Please dont clamber into that danger of death pit to take an abandoned primark bag that isnt yours .. youll get stuck and then imagine tryong to explain yourself .. best daily mail story ever and thisnthread will.feature 😂😂

KlutzyDraconequus · 24/08/2018 09:20

I'd leave the bag in the electric trap of death.. not worth it.
Imagine if you fell off the fence and had to call the ambulance to get you...
"Well I saw this bag you see.. and asked Mumsnet if I should take it.. it took me an hour to decide I was going to take it, but when I came back it'd been chucked in ere. Well I decided to climb over.."
"For a Primark handbag?"
"Well.. yes"
"Are you currently on any medication?" Hmm

Clionba · 24/08/2018 09:23

Yes, please consider the safety advice above. You'll almost certainly be breaking bye-laws. However, hang around that alley, it's obviously the place to be!

Nesssie · 24/08/2018 09:27

So you are all suggesting I should leave the bag, make the 20min trip to Primark and spend £10 on my own bag Shock Outrageous!

(Does anyone have access to a drone with a hook attached?)

OP posts:
Clionba · 24/08/2018 09:30

£10? That much? A drone is a good idea. Or call the electricity company, tell them your errant child threw it in there are could they retrieve it for you safely?

LEMtheoriginal · 24/08/2018 09:32

I found a bag - it was old but had cc money and jewlery inside. Our local police dont deal with lost property so i put it on facebook.

It turns out it belonged to someone who was quite unwell. Althoigh that was my assumption. I was messaged and in the end the police came to my house to get it. I had to wait up for them until about 1am it couldn't wait until morning apparently. They obviously wouldn't tell me anything but said it was significant and were grateful.

I could nevr keep anything like that.

NynaeveSedai · 24/08/2018 09:34

I can't believe you left it there! That was the worst of all options. And because mumsnet told you to? Blimey.

I turned up at work one day (cafe) years ago and found a brand new handbag hanging on the doorknob. I was very grateful and loved that handbag for years.

GoatWithACoat · 24/08/2018 09:37

Mumsnet is hilarious at times. The police don’t show up if you’ve been burgled and battered. As if they have time to give a shiny shit about an empty, discarded Primark bag.

It’s Primark people, not a Hermes Birkin!

Nicknacky · 24/08/2018 09:42

goat Yes, sometimes they do care about discarded hand bags. Why are people struggling to understand that?!

The brand is a red herring. If it had been ripped off the arm of a woman then the perpetrator doesn’t give a shit where it’s from and is after the contents.

GoatWithACoat · 24/08/2018 09:52

Nobody is ‘struggling to understand’, some people have different views, based on RL experiences about what crimes the police will investigate.

cakedup · 24/08/2018 09:54

I think the bag being unreachable would only make me want it more. I would probably climb over the fence, with the help of a friend. I'm not saying that's good advice though. And I can't afford my own £10 Primark handbag.

I wonder if this is an elaborate advertising campaign? Primark could be planting handbags all over the country. A photo of op scaling the fence to get the bag with the caption "Bags to die for" would make an excellent ad.

Nicknacky · 24/08/2018 09:56

goat And you also have police officers on this thread pointing out why it may be of interest to the police. But if they don’t know about it then they can’t decide if it is of interest.

I have put out media appeals asking for people to contact police when property (like a handbag!) is missing.

GoatWithACoat · 24/08/2018 10:03

@nickynacky that’s up to you if you do that and that’s your opinion. But don’t assume people are unable to understand things because they don’t agree with you.

I'm glad I don't live in your area OP. When people find things in my town they put them on the local Facebook page in the hope of reuniting them with their owners.

KlutzyDraconequus · 24/08/2018 10:30

How do you know everyone does this? People might did things everyday and just not tell anyone...
Do you know every person in your town? Is your Facebook group member number the same as town population?
At what age do you get signed up to the group?

I'm really curious about his mystery town where every single person there does exactly the same as everyone else.. it's a singular town that's for sure.

Calling the electricity company to retrieve your lost bag is a great idea

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/08/2018 11:19

It was MINE Sedai. I remember it well.

I just hung it up safely while I nipped down an alley for a wee, and when I came back it was gone! I naturally assumed that it had been beamed aboard a starcraft by alien lifeforms, because I couldn't image that anyone would be so dishonest as to keep it. The other alternative was that a stray tramp had eaten it, but I thought aliens more likely.

Can I have it back, please? and we'll say no more about it.

Badbadtromance · 24/08/2018 11:22

I lost my bag at Christmas with over £200 in it. In June it was handed in to a shop i frequent minus the cash. I was so happy to have it back,so yes please do hand it over

Clionba · 24/08/2018 11:38

Ah, Schadenfreude I'm wondering if the alley that you weed in is the same alley in which the OP found the discarded handbag? Strange things afoot.

FuckPants · 24/08/2018 11:42

I'd have kept it, it's a Primark handbag ffs.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 24/08/2018 11:45

Some people incredibly judgmental here.

Okay not ideal to take it but it's not like the OP ripped it off the shoulder of an OAP.

I'd take it home with you and leave a note telling the person if they come back for it it will be at the police station.

Then take it into the station tomorrow. That's what I'd do anyway. Saves little wannabe gangstas selling it.

NynaeveSedai · 24/08/2018 12:14

@schadenfreude I'm afraid it went to the big primark in the sky a long time ago. Also finders keepers losers weepers Wink
