To keep a handbag I’ve found?

So on my walk this morning I found a Primark handbag in an alleyway. It’s clearly brand new but without tags. There’s nothing in it and it doesn’t look like it has been used at all.
It’s still there now, AIBU to take it? It’s really nice!

Nickynacky not in London they don't.

Nicknacky · 23/08/2018 20:59

gogon Maybe should have said that rather than a blanket statement? I don’t think the op has confirmed that she is in London.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/08/2018 21:00

Jesus wept.

The OP was considering keeping a bag she'd found not drowning a bag of kittens s

Some of the replies are utterly ludicrous.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/08/2018 21:15

drowning a bag of kittens

The BAG was full of KITTENS?!?!?!?!?!

Thesearepearls · 23/08/2018 21:18

Lets recalibrate here

We all know that keeping something that is not ours is wrong? Right? We all know this.

So then it becomes a question of what to do. And we all know what the right thing is to do.

OP I know you are being tempted to keep something that is not yours. But the very fact that you posted a question indicates that you are not happy with the 'finders keepers' ethos

Do the right thing. You want to do the right thing and I want you to do the right thing.

Clionba · 23/08/2018 21:21

She can't, Pearly, pet. Someone even less civic minded has chucked it over a high metal fence where it remains... Tantalising and unobtainable...

IamReginaFalange · 23/08/2018 21:27

We could all arrange to meet up at OP’s house. Maybe we could all make a giant poking device? It we put a hook on the end we could get the bag for her from where it’s been thrown.

It's not a red one with embroidered black flowers on is it? Not that I've lost it but I bought three red bags for a wedding a few weeks ago, two were expensive and one was from Primark and I used the Primark one as described above (and returned the expensive ones) and had so many compliments about my bag!
So yeah, if it's that style then I can understand why you'd want it.

Clionba · 23/08/2018 21:31

Regina - good thinking.
However, we are on the horns of a dilemma. Is Nesssie right or wrong to covet an alley discarded Primark handbag? The police officer on here says wrong. Is there a barrister, judge or vicar on here to help us put??

Clionba · 23/08/2018 21:32

help us out, sorry

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/08/2018 21:39

I am not a vicar, but I am a licensed minister - I think that sometimes God's bounteous gifts come in a practical form eg unidentified handbags which are obviously new.

ONLY OP can decide whether she is being tempted in the wilderness of her life - in which case the response is "Get thee behind me, Satan!" and give me a bunk up so I can reach this bag or "Thank you, Lord for your generosity".

If no-one has been back, the bag is unused, it cannot be identified, there is no sign of anything awry (other than the fact that the bag is there at all) then I would go for the second.

Coveting an alley-discarded Primark bag isn't against any of the commandments. If there was anything in it which identified the owner, or suggested that there had been a hideous crime, then OP would have a responsibility to inform the police. If not, then there is no reason why she shouldn't keep it.

CatsOutTheCudboard · 23/08/2018 21:40

Go grab it!

Clionba · 23/08/2018 21:44

Schadenfreude you have the wisdom of Solomon. I've been flicking through the Book of Revelations for guidance. Also this month's Vogue. I'm no clearer.

Teenagemaw · 23/08/2018 21:44

Ooft take the blooming bag its from Primark probably cost a fiver... the police would laugh and sling it in a drawer where it will remain till someone clears out the drawer.

jarhead123 · 23/08/2018 21:46

I'd take it

Nicknacky · 23/08/2018 21:48

teenage That is not what happens to found property.

Oysterbabe · 23/08/2018 21:56

It's a fucking Primark handbag. Someone probably used it once then threw it away. Take it.

Zoflorabore · 23/08/2018 21:56

Op isn't here right now, she's making a device to get her over the fence...
Or a long hook.

Hope it's not dangerous op, wouldn't be worth losing your life over any handbag, let alone a Primark one :)

Teenagemaw · 23/08/2018 22:28

@Nicknacky you are right they sell unclaimed stuff at auction but no one would bid on a primark bag so they would probably chuck it or take it home.

Nicknacky · 23/08/2018 22:33

teenage Properly lodged property is eventually sold at auction. Bit different to you saying it will be left in a drawer somewhere.

Littlechocola · 23/08/2018 23:54

I don’t care if I’m a pearl clutcher, I wouldn’t be taking a primark bag out of the gutter.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/08/2018 08:00

Schadenfreude you have the wisdom of Solomon.

I have, haven't I Clionba?

Revelation gives me nightmares. I try not to look at it.

Nesssie · 24/08/2018 08:59

@Clionba

Not the best picture but this is the infamous primark bag. It has like grey snakeskin print on the front.

Good morning MNetters, today’s task is to work out how to retrieve the bag. Have a feeling my only option would be to scale the fence. It would have to be a very long pole to hook it out, and I just don’t have enough chopsticks to make one Sad

Good morning, Nesssie. Interesting conundrum, and one which the mumsnet hive mind should solve. Observation 1. It is definitely a new bag 2. It doesn't look spoiled 3. Someone has cast it apparently beyond reach. 4. Those fenced off leccy places are dangerous.
Solutions? Ladder & hook? Fishing rod? Human chain?
