Think I saw a ghost on camera and nobody believes me

We moved into a large Victorian terraced house a few months ago. Always lots of strange noises but obviously in an old house you expect this, but some couldn't be explained like laughing in the bedroom (walls are think and you can't hear next door unless they're actually drilling into a joining wall!). Footsteps on upper floors etc. Along with that the rooms would turn icy cold all of a sudden, even in this hot weather you would be hot and sweaty one minute and then freezing cold the next. I have felt uneasy a lot. When DH went away to China I was here alone and just constantly felt like I wasn't alone. I'm not one to be frightened of the dark etc but there is no way in hell I would walk around this house in the dark. The dog seems really withdrawn and constantly anxious. Ears prick up constantly and he growls and cries for no reason which he never used to do.
DH gets really angry whenever I talk like this, he suffers nightmares (always has) and spooky stuff freaks him out so he gets very defensive and tells me to shut up about it but on a couple of occasions he has come into a room downstairs and looked confused to see me as he thought he'd seen me walk past upstairs etc.

ANyway because nobody will talk to me about this I bought some cheap cameras off eBay, the ones you stick on the wall and you can watch the room from your phone. I periodically watch them at work.
Yesterday I logged in at work and there was someone standing by the kitchen sink. It was a woman's figure but wasn't moving. I ran to show a colleague but it had gone by the time I got to her. NOBODY believes me and DH says if I can keep with it he will actually leave me as I'm making him feel ill.

Wtf. Am I going crazy??! I know logically ghosts don't exist but I can't explain any of this unless I am actually losing my mind. AIBU to wish someone would at least help me look into it properly?
We're in north of England.

Certain places absorb atmospheres, they seem to take on the character of events that have happened. I've experienced that. I don't actually believe in ghosts but do not doubt your experience for one minute.

Maybe your 'ghost' needs acknowledgement and compassion from you and will find rest.

There's a very funny John Finnemore sketch about reincarnation/past lives. He plays someone who tells a client her past lives, he assures her she's had thousands, and he starts listing them in order. They are basically all died at birth, died in toddlerhood, lived to adulthood as a peasant.

KateMcD451 · 23/08/2018 15:58

OP I'm a scientist and I everything I have learnt can't explain some things that have happened in my life. Every logical bone in my body wants to try and explain them away but they happened. Part of me wonders whether supernatural is just natural for this Universe but we just don't yet have the answers.

Lemonysnicketts · 23/08/2018 16:05

It’s not always old houses actually, my dad told me two accounts he exorcised in modern houses (built 1970s/1980s). One kept happening in a child’s bedroom and happened whilst he was there so he ‘moved it on’ and the family had no problems afterwards. The second was what he would call a ‘place memory’ where the family kept hearing the same series of sounds and the history of the place was, again, a sudden death where the person had died alone in pain and been found later on in an unnatural position having tried to get help (I’m deliberately being vague on details).

Everyone asking what a priest can do, well first of all you have to believe the spirit world exists in order to know the answer to that - if you don’t believe in spirits to start with then of course you won’t believe in priests / God / the church or anything else. But if you do believe in the spiritual world, then just as there are natural laws in the physical one, there are laws in the spiritual one I.e. if a spirit is somewhere it has a right to be, and needs moving on by a priest and they have been trained in how to do this, with certain words / rituals etc. So that’s their purpose anyway and evidently it works as my dad will always check post-exorcism that the house has returned to a state of quiet.

I’m not saying I understand it all but for those who do accept the OP may have seen, heard of felt things (and carbon monoxide / an uninvited lodger etc aren’t the cause) then this may explain it a little. But I’m not an expert.

loveyoutothemoon · 23/08/2018 16:10

I think you've got an intruder, who gets in from the loft if it's an open one or your house isn't secure elsewhere.

Lemonysnicketts · 23/08/2018 16:10

@katemc I tend to agree - which is possibly why some see / feel / hear and others don’t, and those that never do think it’s utter bullocks snd those that do would swear on their grandmother it’s real. For me I don’t doubt it at all but I can see why others do.

SummerHoliday79 · 23/08/2018 16:10

A family I know were burgled a few months ago by their neighbours (a few doors down) coming through the loft!

They had heard noises up there in the past but thought it might be pigeons nesting.

Definitely rule out actual intruders first of all!

Lemonysnicketts · 23/08/2018 16:11

OP I think I prefer the ghost theory to the intruder. That’s such a frightening thought. I’d take the ghost over that any day Shock

Lemonysnicketts · 23/08/2018 16:12

Wait until DH is home and investigate the loft together for signs of somebody living there....with a large rolling pin or similar.

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 23/08/2018 16:29

If you claim something exists, the onus is on you to prove it.

Unless it's religion, which seems to be exempt from this. It's strange how people are so incredulous about others believing in ghosts without proof, yet see nothing odd in religious beliefs that involve an unproven sky-fairy. Stephen Fry's interview where he explained his atheism punctured that one.

TeaByTheSeaside · 23/08/2018 16:31

OP I believe you.

I'm a scientist- I don't believe in ghosts. I believe when we die we no longer exist. We don't float around as spirits.

But ....

Two years ago, we stayed in a 300 year old house on holiday. As soon as I walked in I felt a chill and the hairs went up on the back of my neck.

There were strange bangs on the windows at night and the door flew open (no wind).

We ended up going home early.

I couldn't wait to get out of there.

I've stayed in lots of old properties before and since and never felt like that.

I'm not sure what to do about it. You could try get someone in but it's so hard to avoid getting ripped off.

I'd certainly try speaking to the spirit and asking them to leave. It can't hurt.

Good luck!

“What are the chances of having your phone in your hand in the house at the same time as a ghost happens to put in a quick appearance.

None at all.”

VanGoghsDog · 23/08/2018 18:30

Don't people who walk into houses and 'feel a chill' just put a jumper on?

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/08/2018 18:38

Is this the first time you’ve lived in an older property? Despite the walk thickness it’s surprising how easily some noise can travel in a terraced house. We live in a Victorian terrace and you can clearly hear what’s going on next door from the bathroom but from nowhere else in the house.

Another vote for changing the locks!

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 23/08/2018 18:45

Please check that no one is living in your attic.
This reminds me of stories from years ago of shared attics in old houses, and people secretly living up there and going into peoples houses when they were out/asleep.

hammeringinmyhead · 23/08/2018 18:57

Honestly the mind is a powerful thing and I have had experiences I can't explain (including in a new build!)

But please do stop going on about it to your husband. For those who have an active imagination it only takes a bit of insomnia and you can end up absolutely terrified while lying in your own bed which is supposed to be a safe place.

Severide08 · 23/08/2018 22:06

I believe you OP .I live in an old house ,my DH saw a ghost here when my DS was a baby looking into his cot .I have also had items fall that couldn't have possibly moved themselves and heard my name twice very close by when i was alone,it was a woman's voice .I was told by a medium at a spiritual group who looked directly at me that I was surrounded by lots of grateful spirits and then proceeded to get my job spot on and actually described one person to a tee from many years ago .They also said I am very good at sensing when a spirit is around and i often do feel that there is someone by me if that makes sense. We all believe what we believe,it doesn't scare me but I know that there are people that would say nope load nonsense.

ThistleAmore · 23/08/2018 22:13

I don't believe in ghosts or the supernatural at all, BUT physics is a thing and I think, in my own uneducated slightly 'woo' way, that certain energies can persist.

When we first moved into our home (a 120-yr-old Edwardian building, which has obviously had many owners and residents over the years), it felt a bit 'grudging' to me (a bit 'oh, here we f*cking go again!', if that makes sense).

However, we've lived here for 15 years now, and I genuinely believe it KNOWS it is our house and we are its people: we love it, look after it and nurture it, so hopefully any 'residual energy' absorbed is good.

As I say, I'm very un-woo by nature, but this makes me feel better! Could you try 'talking' to your house? Let you know you mean no harm, you just want to be happy there? You might feel a bit silly initially, but I talk to my house a lot and it seems to like it. Wink

LuluJakey1 · 23/08/2018 22:24

You haven't found any unexplained wet patches on the carpet have you OP?

LeftRightCentre · 23/08/2018 22:36

Quest Red has Paranormal Lockdown double bill on tonight and they'll beging showing their latest series, which was shot in the UK, next Thursday Smile

Golde · 23/08/2018 22:39

I always see ghosts, always have, so does my mum. I like it but don't often tell people.

Golde · 23/08/2018 22:47

Also I don't care if no one believes. I wouldn't either if I didn't see them.

DH was a scorner, until one day I saw one standing next to him and then saw DH see him too. DH said Who's that? I didn't tell him he'd been there for the last 10 minutes.

SimonBridges · 23/08/2018 22:51

Here is a thought.
You say that the apparition was stood at the sink.
I’m guessing your sink is under the window.
Could it be that at that point in the day, the light coming in through your window cast a shadow that looked like a person on the camera.

memaymamo · 23/08/2018 23:08

Golde, that is interesting. What do all the ghosts look like?

PlantsArePeopleToo · 23/08/2018 23:11

I think you should call the police OP. This could be something serious.
