Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Why? It's just a shortening of a word...like how you'd say pub instead of public house. I don't think it's that big a deal? Especially online when slang and shortenings are the norm.

Cleanermaidcook · 23/08/2018 09:12

No thanks

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 23/08/2018 09:12

No, shan’t. Grin

Winosaurus · 23/08/2018 09:13

I am doing my MSc at Uni. ODFOD

DollyWilde · 23/08/2018 09:13

Sorry, I’d love to post a lengthy reply to this but I’m off to the gymnasium Hmm

Bunbunbunny · 23/08/2018 09:13

What? Yabu.

missyB1 · 23/08/2018 09:13

Grates on me when my my South African dh calls it “Varsity”, i would much rather hear Uni any day! For some unknown reason Varsity gives me the bloody rage!

safariboot · 23/08/2018 09:14

We could say "college" instead.

ShatnersWig · 23/08/2018 09:14

I will. If you stop saying "let's" and use "let us".

Oh, and if you stop saying MNers rather than Mumsnetters.

Oh, and if you stop saying DC rather than dear children.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 23/08/2018 09:14

.....nah, I’m going to carry on saying uni.

pickingdaisies · 23/08/2018 09:14

Yabu. Grin

TheFifthKey · 23/08/2018 09:14

We called it uni 20 years ago so I don’t see why I can’t say it now!

Grinspoon · 23/08/2018 09:14

Nah mate, can't. I'm an Aussie and that's what we do - shorten words. It's our cultural identity and what brings us together.

user1483387154 · 23/08/2018 09:14

Uni uni uni

Doyoumind · 23/08/2018 09:15

What a strange thing to get worked up about.

LotsToThinkOf · 23/08/2018 09:15

It's uni. Unless you speak without using any abbreviations of course. Weird.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 23/08/2018 09:15

Nope

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 23/08/2018 09:15

Maybe we should all start calling our prams, perambulators again?
YABU

Auldspinster · 23/08/2018 09:16

I don't recall uni being a thing until the days of Neighbours.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/08/2018 09:17
  1. It's quicker to type.
  1. If I called it uni when I was there, why should I stop when I leave? Or are uni students not adults?
Spreadingcudweed · 23/08/2018 09:17

I would but we have guests and I am too busy preparing luncheon.

Wink
PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 23/08/2018 09:17

I don't say it but I do write it!! Far shorter to type. So quite likely a lot of the people you are blaming you only come across online and only see the written version

sorryihaventacluetoo · 23/08/2018 09:18

Ever say 'hi'? Fuck You, say 'hello'.

LadyWarleggan · 23/08/2018 09:18

I don’t hear kids talking about ‘uni’.
