For the love of God can adults please stop saying uni

Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

My husband and I...

...after the Royal style.

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 10:28

There are proper problems in the world you know

Really? Then why aren't "you tackling some of them rather than wasting your precious time engaging with me?

I get that language evolves but "uni" grates. Students saying it sound daft and adults sound like they're trying too hard.

Neighbours and home and away came here in the late 80s - 87 or 88 I think. I'm 43 and had friends who were going to university around that time and we definitely didn't refer to it as Uni.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 10:29

Don’t be daft, OP.

kettleonplease · 23/08/2018 10:30

Uni is probably one of the least irritating abbreviations, so no not going to stop using it! There are many many other words you could home in on?!

InfiniteSheldon · 23/08/2018 10:32

I would but I'm finishing my brekkie and I hope you are using the world wide web to post on mumsnet about your darling children

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 10:32

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 10:33

@CressidaEgg, you said it for me. Nobody here called it "uni" (I can hardly bring myself to write that abomination) until Neighbours came along. I can't describe how much I hate it.

Frankwindsor · 23/08/2018 10:40

Haven't read the whole of the thread but I am right with you OP. Cheapens what is supposed to be a massive privilege.

Skiiltan · 23/08/2018 10:40

Well I'm on your side, OP. It's probably just we two, though. It grates on my nerves just as much as "convo", "tomoz" and all the other expressions lazy people use.

ilovesooty · 23/08/2018 10:40

Neighbours has a lot to answer for.

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 10:41

It's not going away

They said that about Brexit but that's not stopping some of us trying to make it stop! Article 50 is reversible and so is the use of "uni"!

OP posts:
WhatInsect · 23/08/2018 10:42

uni

toomuchtooold · 23/08/2018 10:43

Yeah all right, but then I insist that you all start calling me Dr Toomuch Grin

Gersemi · 23/08/2018 10:44

YA definitely NBU. Likewise "indy" for independent.

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 10:45

While we're at it, when did school pupils (and especially primary school pupils) become "students"? Students are adults who are actually studying a particular subject at University, ffs.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/08/2018 10:46

Late to the party, but I am completely with you on this one, OP. Totally grates hearing anyone say "yoo-knee". Ugh.

pickingdaisies · 23/08/2018 10:46

So let's get on to a real problem that affects us all. People who start sentences with So! Grin HTH

BloodyDisgrace · 23/08/2018 10:46

I agree with OP. Also hate it when adults say they go "to school" meaning courses, university etc. Are you fucking 5? mucking in there with colour pencils?

CSIblonde · 23/08/2018 10:47

IME only those who think they are posh/are trying to be, (& think getting a degree is a status thing) would get their knickers in a twist over a short form of a word.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/08/2018 10:47

(Also for some reason when I see "Uni" written down, it always sounds in my head as if Kate Aldridge was saying it, which doesn't help with the grating impression.)

RedDwarves · 23/08/2018 10:47

Anyone who says "university" is looked upon as they wanker they are in Australia.

Uni. Simple. Remove the stick from your rectum.

OutPinked · 23/08/2018 10:47

I loved uni.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 10:48

Privileged experience?! The world and its dog has a uni degree in current. Nothing special about it - sadly.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 10:49

...in current times.
