Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

OP posts:
Camomila · 23/08/2018 09:36

Thats very true lady I call it uni myself but whenever I hear kids talk about it it's always 'my mummy goes to university' or 'my mummy works at the university'

KingIrving · 23/08/2018 09:37

I am an atheist so not affected by the love of god. Does it mean I get to say it?
Do you say 10 am or 10 ante meridian?

OftenHangry · 23/08/2018 09:38

I am going to watch some movie from my digital video disc on my television. Or maybe play some old songs I have on old compact discs.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 23/08/2018 09:38

We did in the 1990s and my mum studied at a poly in the 1960s. It’s human nature to abbreviate long words.

InfiniteVariety · 23/08/2018 09:39

I don't like it because eldest DD went to University College Oxford which is shortened by all college members to Univ. So she went to Uni at Univ which is too confusing and difficult to say Grin

But it's true I think that it's a recent thing - when I went in 1978 no-one said uni

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/08/2018 09:40

Yes I did call it uni in the '80s.

Ohyesiam · 23/08/2018 09:41

No.
Uni uni uni uni uni uni

puzzledlady · 23/08/2018 09:42

Yes because every single adult on planet Earth is on Mumsnet and will listen. Don’t be so silly OP - how does it affect you how people abbreviate university? There are proper problems in the world you know Confused

SootyandMathew · 23/08/2018 09:42

Always call it by it's initials and a uni is totally different to a college, or at least it is in Ireland.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 09:42

Varsity is an odd one.
It would irritate me but for no reasonable reason. Doubly annoying.

I dislike UNI but I think I do use it.

I always say pram, lunch and bus.

Gromance02 · 23/08/2018 09:42

Especially if it's not a proper Russell Group University and is a former Polytechnic.

SuburbanRhonda · 23/08/2018 09:42

Could you just avoid any uni students or anyone who’s ever been to uni?

Then you wouldn’t have to hear it with your delicate ears Grin

HolyMountain · 23/08/2018 09:43

I'm fairly sure I first heard Uni watching Neighbours when Brad was in it.

MrsDrStrange · 23/08/2018 09:43

I have been in Aus for 37 years - it’s always been Uni. When I was in England in the 70’s it was college. Obviously all different now.

SaoirseTheSeahorse · 23/08/2018 09:44

mothersanonymous · 23/08/2018 09:44

Biscuit (that's bickie)

FlyingElbows · 23/08/2018 09:45

I'm the same as Auldspinster, it's a Neighbours thing.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 09:45

I was from a non university background and used the term "college" if I had to refer to it at all, in an attempt to not sound "up myself"!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 23/08/2018 09:45

YANBU, OP! It started with Neighbours and still gets on my tits. In my day, we called it “college”.

thecatneuterer · 23/08/2018 09:45

It really grates on me too. And I can't put into words why.

BagelGoesWalking · 23/08/2018 09:46

Of course ppl are going to write uni rather than the whole word. Doesn't mean we actually say the shortened word when talking.

onefootinthegrave · 23/08/2018 09:46

OP, are you the person who wrote this alternative version to 'Show me the way to go home' and did you do it while you were at uni? Smile

Indicate the way to my abode
I'm exhausted and I wish to retire
I had an alcoholic beverage sixty minutes ago
And it's gone right to my cerebalcaranuim
Wherever I may meander
Over land or sea or effervescent water
You will always hear me humming this melodium
Indicate the way to my abode

BakedBeans47 · 23/08/2018 09:47

YABU

I’ve called it Uni since I went there in 1990

Uni uni uni

Shitonthebloodything · 23/08/2018 09:47

Always astounds me that there are people out there who give a shit about stuff like this.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 23/08/2018 09:51
