TO think Millennials need to get their act together and

Form a political party:

  • stop Brexit
  • prioritise housing
  • impose at least 50% tax on all inheritance
  • impose second home taxes

And other stuff. But they should be IN CHARGE now. They need to rise up and sort things out.

I keep telling my DC but they are too busy on instagram. AIBU?

I'll get right on it, when I've finished making memories.

popocatepetals · 21/08/2018 16:52

Millennials will never be in charge whilst the grey vote is the majority

Oh but they will be in charge eventually. When it's their turn. In about 35 years' time.

Blessthekids · 21/08/2018 16:53

I guess the point is you cannot have low income taxes and then also low inheritance tax, the money to pay for NHS etc has to come from somewhere. If you don't want to pay while alive, pay when you are dead. I personally would prefer lower taxes and higher inheritance taxes as when I am dead I won't need it. If your kids need it then make sure you help them when you are still alive. As long as they know inheritance tax is high and it doesn't constantly go up and down then we can all plan for it, give more to charity etc.

placemats · 21/08/2018 16:54

I will not be going into carer mode.

I have my get out savings for that.

No fecking way am I ending up being cared for intimately by a bunch of strangers in an anodyne care home.

Hazardswan · 21/08/2018 16:55

I'm a millenial...I eat avocados, drink coffee and never buy diamonds. However i am also a full time carer trying to navigate a failing NHS that lacks expertise and I am fucking tired.

Gen X step up and sort this shit out pleaseee?!

Eliza9917 · 21/08/2018 16:57

What exactly is a fucking millennial? When I goggled it, it said anyone born between 1981 and early 90's.

I was born in 1981 and I am not a fucking millennial.

Fucking Millennial values and traits apply to the namby pamby snowflake generation born 2000 onward in my view. Not to 80's/90's kids that actually have a bit of nous about them.

longwayoff · 21/08/2018 16:57

Brownmouse dead right about debate in our youth. Probably due to the grammar schools and our free education. Running for hills now . ..

Nannyplumshairstyle · 21/08/2018 16:58

You fucked it up, you fix it. Stop trying to pass the blame and responsibility.

This x 1000

LeighaJ · 21/08/2018 16:59

@brownmouse

Oh bless your heart.

YearOfYouRemember · 21/08/2018 17:00

Too busy laughing at the name millennial for me to take this seriously.

nervousnails · 21/08/2018 17:01
  • impose at least 50% tax on all inheritance
  • impose second home taxes

Are you insane? People scrimp and save all their lives to save up for their children/family and you want to raid that???

There is a second home tax. It is called STAMP DUTY.

WhatWouldCoachBombayDo · 21/08/2018 17:01
    • stop Brexit
  • prioritise housing
  • impose at least 50% tax on all inheritance
  • impose second home taxes *

So me and DH are millennials, we have a small 3 bed terraced house and 1 DC and 1 on the way (hopefully should everything be ok). We have a combined family income of approximately £45k. We're not affluent but we make ends meet and we do have small luxuries, so we can't complain.

  1. it's not about stopping Brexit now, it's about making the best of a bad situation. I voted remain DH voted leave. We're over it now.

  2. we worked hard, saved and me and DH bought our house in our mid 20's, why should I prioritise housing when it is achievable to get your own with hard work. (However I understand the disabled and those with certain circumstances are in need of housing, but then again your generation let people buy their social housing depleting the stock. So again why fix your problem?)

  3. why should my children loose 50% of their inheritance, and why should I lose 50% of mine.. just no.

  4. We will eventually purchase a second home so both me and DH have a "property pension pot" it will also serve as a second home for one of our 2 DC to inherit.

We millennials need not rectify any of the issues you have mentioned. It's not on our priority list "Soz." Life isn't easy by any means, you have to cut your cloth accordingly and live within your means but that's it. I don't see why at all I should be taxed for being frugal and saving money/ purchasing a second property.

Blessthekids · 21/08/2018 17:02

Gen X step up and sort this shit out pleaseee?!

I am trying! Believe me I am really trying to do my best to sort it out. Unfortunately, too many of even Gen X think that tweeting is job done! It isn't. We need to get our wallets out and put pen to paper.

user1457017537 · 21/08/2018 17:02

This whole inheritance tax thing is really pissing me off. What about the poor, unfortunate people who need care and have their homes taken off them. Their estate does not receive any money back if they die in 6 months. The whole of the money from the sale gets taken.

WhatWouldCoachBombayDo · 21/08/2018 17:04

@Eliza no they are called generation Z I do believe.

shoesoff1 · 21/08/2018 17:04

Until housing is more affordable & pensions more secure people won’t vote for abolishing inheritance tax & higher taxes on 2nd homes etc as people are aspirational.

As an older millennial (although don’t think of my self as one) the idea of higher taxes is probably sensible but I don’t think this should come from income alone.

Loonoon · 21/08/2018 17:05

My DC are millennials. They would support an anti-Brexit party that addressed the housing crisis. However they stand to do very well when they inherit our property portfolio so I can’t see them voting to increase inheritance tax or second property taxes.

chaoscategorised · 21/08/2018 17:05

'Too busy on Instagram' Hmm... Some millennials are in their thirties. Not all millennials are avocado loving teens. Really irks me!

Otherwise, I agree to a point, it'd be nice to see younger people in politics, but I think by and large millennials, or young people, are pretty politically engaged. Of course, I have some friends who are against most of your ideas too - not all millennials are left leaning or anti-Brexit!

MinecraftHolmes · 21/08/2018 17:06

I think there are many 30 somethings who own their home (not from family help/inheritance)

From my personal experience, every single person/couple in my social circle/DH's social circle who has a mortgage only has it because of some form of financial assistance from their parents/grandparents (our ages go from 28-36, so prime Millennial age range). I'd be interested in finding out what the actual figures are like.

brownmouse · 21/08/2018 17:09

It sounds as though, apart from Blessthekids, who I will adopt, the millennials here aren't happy with the status quo.

You are going to miss the NHS though. It's been brilliant. And social care has to come out of private wealth unless the system changes, so around 1 in 4 of you will lose out on that inheritance....

Ds1 hasn't finished uni yet but ill put him right one it

To be honest i think he would be quite keen

shoesoff1 · 21/08/2018 17:10

MinecraftHolmes In London & exactly true for myself & all our friends. Good jobs but not one person bought without help. Some of my neighbours who are now friends have had further inheritances to move up the ladder. Not many jobs pay enough to afford a 1m property without tons of equity & or parental help.

Blessthekids · 21/08/2018 17:13

@brownmouse - apart from Blessthekids, who I will adopt LOL

KipperTheFrog · 21/08/2018 17:13

Millennial here.
DH and I both vote. We have careers, me in the NHS, DH ex military. We are homeowners. But we are in the minority in our friendship group in that we are on home number 3, where our friends are either buying 1st homes or still renting.
I do not want a 50% inheritance tax. My DGrandfather has paid tax all his life - tax on his wages, tax on his pension, he should not be taxed a 3rd time when he passes away!
Agree brexit should be stopped. Don't think a referendum should have been so binding (or held in the 1st place). The Mps should now be saying it's too risky and stop it.
House prices are coming down. Mortgages should be easier to get, ability to pay rent should count towards ability to pay a mortgage as rent is generally a higher monthly cost than a mortgage.
There's already penalties on buying second properties to the tune of 2% extra stamp duty. This has brought the buy to let market down.
I do vote, and will continue to do so for the party that seems best at the time. Sadly there's little choice between them - they're all shit.

nervousnails · 21/08/2018 17:14

@MinecraftHolmes, almost the entire set of mine and DH's friends bought are the opposite. Not a penny from family. All on our own. All of us bought in the 350 to 650 range. No million pound properties. yet.
