Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

Looks like this thread has validated my previous post.

Which was what, sorry, can't find it? Long thread.

My friend used to serve her jerk chicken wet, with a side of rice and pea - it's the way her and her son preferred it (and I wasn't complaining!)

But it was the spices that went in first - of course this was before Levi Roots/Dragons Den etc.

Some of us white people who only cadge on to their Jamaican mates for the food remember Levi Roots as a musician before any sauce kicked off.

But we're ancient.

I have been lucky enough (privileged?) to visit both Barbados and Jamaica some 25 years ago. I actually gave up my 10 years of being vegetarian after visiting a tiny place called 'Granny's' and being asked do I want some gravy sauce with my macaroni cheese? It smells so good, actually I do!

I've never found anything quite like it again.

Thought I'd post these here...

What's so special about jerk? ... well firstly it's the intellectual property of Jamaica and is unique to Jamaica as it has a specific geographic indicator. No other Caribbean island does jerk. It's not just the marinade, but the manner in which it is cooked.

It's not just rubbing spices on to meat or pouring Levi's sauce over some meat 🤢.... Levi's isn't even authentic... it's done to cater to the British palate. It's decent... but my mother makes better jerk and jerk sauce.

I hope he gets stung... although I suppose he's named it "jerk" and not "Jamaican jerk" as I suppose his "team" would have done their research...

It's still fucking shitty rice in a pouch! Vile!!!

And we don't use "chilies" we use scotch bonnet pepper in jerk... not those pointy things that lack flavour and only has heat. And I mean proper scotch bonnet peppers because I've bought the ones here they lack flavour and heat.

And Jamaicans don't eat fish and chips. We eat chicken and chips... fish and chips is not something served in Jamaica the exception being hotels.

We have fried fish (whole fish.. bones and heads attached) sometimes with an escovitch sauce... served with bammy (cassava) or Johnny cakes ( fried dumplings) and the ultimate festivals ( polenta, flour, salt, sugar- made into a dough and fried)

And to the person talking about maroons showing locals how to cook... first of all Christopher Columbus killed all the locals / native (awaraks) with the diseases they brought from Europe and enslavement... so there were no "locals" left... only Africans by the time the British took the island from the Spanish... perhaps try to get the history correct 😐.
