Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

That's pretty rude, and uncalled for. Seems you have failed to follow the thread and don't understand why the questions were asked. No need to be rude to others because you don't get it.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 16:15

Toomany - I agree with you, the poster was rude but come on - what exactly is it you don't get? It couldn't be clearer from that link and from my description too.
Are you misunderstanding on purpose? I genuinely don't understand how you're not grasping it! Don't you want to or something?

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 16:18

What if you are a vegitarian and you pour it on tofu, is that jerk tofu?

I can see jerk tofu being a thing more than rice - as you could feasibly jerk tofu to adapt for a vegetarian version! Tofu can be marinated.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 16:21

There isn't anything I don't get. It's you that misunderstands.

Throughout the thread people are saying things like "jerk is a spice rub, not a sauce, a sauce is not real jerk" then also saying "jerk sauce is totally a thing as long as the person who made it is Jamaican..." and so on ad nauseum.
What I'm asking (to point out the lack of clarity) is how far you can stray from the central core of authenticity before its not "real enough"?

Levi Roots makes jerk sauce, yes? In the range, which contains spice rubs and marinades, there is also a squeezy jerk sauce that the bottle tells you to put on burgers and hotdogs etc, that it goes with everything...but you're saying "god you're so thick, jerk is only rubbing spices on meat, you can't do that to rice or anything else..."

you see the problem?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/08/2018 16:24

I'm sure there are people who will say that any ready made sauce or spice mix isn't authentic anyway, or that it doesn't taste right, or that the ingredients are wrong. I don't buy ready made mixes, pastes or marinades and they usually taste weird.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 16:32

Oh and while you're sneering at jerk sauce on rice, check out Levi Roots website, there a recipe where you take cooked rice, peppers onion and mushroom and stir in half a bottle of his jerk sauce. Why not email him and tell him what a stupid arsehole he is who doesn't understand?

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 16:34

I'm not sneering, it was a question as to how would you do it? I said correct me if I'm wrong. If in fact you can jerk rice I stand corrected! Smile

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 16:35

This is pretty sneery considering you were in the wrong, don't you think?

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 16:43

Did you even look at the link and read it properly before you commented?
It's very clear what jerk is, where it originates, how it's cooked and marinated.

You're being an arse and again arguing for the sake of it.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 16:48

Yes, and as I said, it did not answer my question. But thank you anyway.

May I advise you to be a little less rude to people when you haven't understood their posts? you seem inordinately angry that your linking to wiki wasn't fawned over. It's a bit needy.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 16:57

Nope not needy, nor concerned that it didn't get "fawned over" just passing on some information that may help others, if infact it didn't help you.

May I also advise you to do the same? As you're coming across as an argumentative arsehole.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 17:00

as you have repeatedly said. Grin

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 17:11

arguing for the sake of it.

Starting to look like it. There's nothing not to get from the link if it's been read really.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 17:14

If you read my post and the link someone else posted, I did NOT say jerk is only rubbing spices on meat, I clearly said there's a wet rub/sauce marinade method too.
You must be being obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. Either that or you're just not reading posts properly.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 17:16

but you said you couldn't possibly put it on rice! Keep up with yourself!

How would you even jerk rice in the first place? It's not a question of "pouring the sauce over the top of rice."Isn't it a method of rubbing spices into the meat? How would you even rub spices into rice?

was what you said. Levi Roots (who has been held up as the one to know) literally does pour the sauce over rice!!

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 17:25

Toomany - I asked a question. How would you even jerk rice in the first place? Isn't it a method of rubbing spices into meat?"
Then afterwards I used the wonderful invention called the internet as I like to learn and answered my own question. There's the rubbing in of spices, or a marinade version. You can't really do either to rice.
You can pour jerk sauce over the top though if you want, nothing's stopping you. I'm presuming Levi Roots has the actual ingredients of jerk sauce so it would make more sense than the JO one?! Grin
I really wish someone who actually has first hand knowledge on it would come along and tell us in more detail as it's a head against desk feeling right now. Grin

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 17:38

First hand knowledge of what?
I'm making jerk pork for dinner tonight would you like to know the method I used to season and cook it?

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 17:44

First hand knowledge of what?
Basically knowing what they're on about and not just learning as they go along like me. Grin

Ooh yes please if you're serious I'd love to. Smile

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 18:06

Toomany - I asked a question

Well you did, but you added in loads of "Omg, what are you not getting, you thickos, I genuinely do not understand how you don't get it" gubbins for some bizarre reason, without understanding any of it yourself. What was that about?

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 18:10

Basically knowing what they're on about and not just learning as they go along like me.
Everyday is a school day so keep learnimg. my family are Jamaican so I've grown up eating and cooking most Caribbean dishes, if you have a Caribbean food shop near you why don't you pop in and ask them what the basics are.

5 scallions (green onions)
5 sprigs of fresh thyme (about 2tbs if dried)
1 tsp salt (add more to taste)
1 1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tbs brown sugar
2 1/2 tbs ground allspice
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
2 scotch bonnet peppers (seeds left out if you don't want it to spicy)
4 tbs soy sauce
2 tbs vegetable oil
2 tsb vinegar
1 onion
1/2 cup orange juice
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp grated ginger

Put it all together in a blender until you have a smooth paste, then rub over meat leave it overnight if possible to marinate then stick it on the Bbq to cook, obviously if you don't have a bbq it can be put in the oven.
Serve with rice & peas/plain rice (which is what i'm having as i forgot to soak my peas last night) salad and homemade coleslaw.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 18:23

Brilliant, thank you for that! Will have to try.
We don't have a Caribbean food shop nearby Sad we're near a huge city though that I'm sure must have one, will have to have a look.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 22/08/2018 19:27

I see Levi's Jerk sauce is advertised for vegetarians and vegans. So its pretty obvious he means it to be used in vegetarian and vegan recipes. aka meat NOT required.

I can cook some chicken pour over his sauce, reheat and I have homemade Jerk chicken.

I can cook some rice pour over his sauce, reheat and I have homemade Jerk rice.

Levi wants us to use his Jerk sauce over as many foods as possible, so he can make as much money as possible. Just like Jamie.

I also bought some chip shop curry rice at the shop. Not sure its ever going to ever see the inside of a chip shop but I guess no one is worried about the cultural appropriation from British chip shops.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 19:38

My God, just stop. Grin Do you want a spade? Dig yourself in further? How the hell is it cultural appropriation from British chip shops as opposed to Jamaican jerk recipes? Not even comparable lol.

DameSquashalot · 22/08/2018 19:47

I'm going to scroll past walking's posts from now on 🤣😂

Walkingdeadfangirl · 22/08/2018 19:47

rainbowsandsmiles, its a method of cooking just like 'Jerk' supposedly is.

I think Levi has got it right, its something like 'pour and cook' he has written on his vegan Jerk sauce iirc.
