Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

OP posts:

That’s usually just called having a massive chip on your shoulder.

This is what I see too.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 10:36

Kim k wore her hair in braids and it was made out like she had invented the style herself, yet a black actress who wore her hair in exactly the same style was told she "looked unprofessional" and to "make her hair more sleek" when in all likelihood the actress has been wearing her hair like that since she was a child, so please tell me how anything I said is nonsense.

Because it is nonsense! Who made out like Kim invented the style? No one did. In fact there was lots of muttering about cultural appropriation for that as well, if you recall.

Black womens hair is a serious issue so why feel the need to over dramatise and invent to the point where no-one will listen to that serious issue? It's not helpful.

Vladimirs you're 100% on point. But you're mostly shouting into the void here. Racists just see a chance to say black people aren't appropriated, don't experience numerous microaggressions etc. They know all that - but they don't care.

Brilliant post. I stepped away from this thread early when it turned as it’s like ignorance bingo! I tend not to engage in threads like this because you CANNOT reason/argue with ignorance and stupidity. It is futile and depressing.🤭

PerpendicularVincent · 22/08/2018 11:23

I haven't seen any outright racism, but have seen an interesting debate and a wide range of viewpoints.

It would be unfair to the OP, and the people who have posted and shared their experiences, to claim racism and shut down the debate.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 11:55

Yes I recall much "muttering" about cultural appropriation regarding Kim k and her boxer braid hairstyle.
The fact that you're saying it was over dramatized clearly shows you have no understanding of the issuse, infact you've contridictided yourself.
The issue is that black women aren't allowed to speak up about something that they have been slated for, without being told they're drama queens, they have a chip on their shoulders or that what they're speaking about is nonsense and they should get over it.

You're looking for an argument and I have no desire to engage with someone who is clearly very ignorant, because the argument doesn't matter to you doesn't mean it's nonsense to others.

So again, I answered a question for someone who was asking, if you wish to find out more of the he said, she said I will again direct you to Google.

Oh and you still can't jerk rice! ✌🏽

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 11:57

So you recall the talk about how she shouldn't wear braids because of CA, but you also insist that she was universally lauded and made out like she invented them?
Can't both be true, which is why you are talking nonsense.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 12:20

Well yes they are both true, I never said that I thought she had invented them, nor did I say she shouldn't wear them.
It was plastered everywhere that it was her new style and she had made them popular and fashionable to wear.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 12:22

If people have actually read the thread, I think some are either hard of thinking or wilfully not getting the point and being obtuse for the sake of it.
I started reading the thread more of "how is it offensive? Don't be ridiculous" but can see the other side more now.

abacucat · 22/08/2018 12:23

Too many people think racism, homophobia, sexism, etc has to be in your face to exist. It does not.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 12:24

That was to heartofgold's post I should add.

TuftyBum · 22/08/2018 13:48

I was in Tesco's today and found a few dried products called Jerk seasoning. Now, if I didn't know better, I might think that jerk is an actual seasoning, not a cooking method. I wonder if that is what is at play here; they think people see jerk as a seasoning so can market 'jerk' flavoured rice on the back of that.

Yes I know it is not accurate etc but I wonder if that is where their through process came from.

Dorsetdays · 22/08/2018 14:43

Tufty. Think you’re right that’s part of the issue particularly as those claiming jerk can’t agree on what it actually is. Some have said it’s a seasoning, some the method of cooking.. Levi Roots clearly thinks it’s a sauce as he makes a lot of money selling it (good for him).

If Levi Roots can ‘jerk’ a pizza (Domino’s) by pouring sauce over it, why can’t someone ‘jerk’ rice Hmm

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 15:17

Levi Roots clearly thinks it’s a sauce as he makes a lot of money selling it (good for him).

If jerk is a method of cooking where you rub/marinate sauce on meat, of course jerk sauce is a thing as the sauce will be what you marinate your meat in to start with!
The pizzas are with meat on too.Which will have been with the jerk method. Not putting random spices nothing to do with it on rice.
Are people not getting it on purpose or something? It really isn't rocket science. Confused

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 15:25

yeah but if you pour Levi's sauce on rice, is it then jerk rice? Or is it only if you put it on meat? And if meat, does it only count if you barbeque it? What if you are a vegitarian and you pour it on tofu, is that jerk tofu?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/08/2018 15:27

I was just pondering Jerk tofu actually.

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 15:40

yeah but if you pour Levi's sauce on rice, is it then jerk rice?

I'm not Jamaican in the slightest, so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!
How would you even jerk rice in the first place? It's not a question of "pouring the sauce over the top of rice."
Isn't it a method of rubbing spices into the meat? How would you even rub spices into rice? Sounds a bit messy/fiddly!
You don't really marinate rice either if doing it the wet jerk method, wouldn't that be a bit of a soggy mess if you just left rice to marinate in a sauce?
Not even a thing.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/08/2018 15:40

Can you barbecue tofu? 😂

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 15:51

but its not just rubbing dry spices if you can buy a sauce, is it?

I'm just asking how specific does it need to be to be authentic?

DameSquashalot · 22/08/2018 15:54

It needs the allspice and the Scotch bonnet.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 15:56

HTH

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 15:57

No, that doesn't help.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 16:02

😂😂😂 Are you this much of an arsehole in real life?

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 16:05

but its not just rubbing dry spices if you can buy a sauce, is it?

Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong but:

  • there's the dry method - rubbing spices into meat.
  • the wet method - marinating meat in sauce.

Can you even do either of those to rice? As I said, either methods would be very fiddly or very messy!

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 16:06

Are you this much of an arsehole in real life?

Lol, just catching up on the later posts - I think some are playing Stoopid for the sake of it, as that link couldn't be clearer! Grin
