Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

I posted this upthread but it didn’t get answered - isn’t it a good thing if white people adopt cultural differences? Ie with Kylie Jenner wearing braids isn’t that good because it brings it mainstream and therefore makes it more acceptable? Black people would benefit from this.

PerpendicularVincent · 21/08/2018 22:54

White women seeking out black men for their sexuality? In what sense? Serious question

ShirleyPhallus · 21/08/2018 22:56

Black men seeking out white women or light-skinned women to be seen as a success.

White women seeking out black men for their sexuality.

It seems that whatever white women do by dating black men it’s not acceptable. Fine for black men to date white women but not fine for white women to date black men?

And as for stop and search - I thought I read an article that said proportionally more crimes are committed by people of colour, hence the likelihood of stopping and searching - these people have been profiled as being most likely to carry weapons etc.

DameSquashalot · 21/08/2018 22:57

They may well be able to post Brexit, dame squashalot. But the people who went to the trouble of protecting it won't be happy.

Anyway, I've already said, I think much more fuss has been made of this than needs to be. People will probably buy it and like it and Jamie will do well.

twistanddoubt · 21/08/2018 23:03

clearly, lots of people have too much time on their hands! the whole "scandal" (gimme a break!) is clearly a liberal-lefty version of curtain-twitchers!

i mean, I made a Greek salad the other day - come and arrest me PC Plod! Or The Guardian 'Thought Police' (if its a slow day!)

i'd never bother with this issue myself, but had to state the obvious when i saw 580 posts on this non-story.

Botanicbaby · 21/08/2018 23:06

Vladimir nor do I find it palatable that ethnic women - and men - are being influenced by marketing to use lightening creams that damage their health.

There are plenty of people who would be only too happy to see Levi enjoy the success he has. You shouldn’t make a generalisation that white people wouldn’t be happy for him. This thread is about JO “jerk rice” though and I don’t understand why it would be okay for Levi to market a (not “real jerk”) product like this to the unsuspecting, uneducated masses for a profit and not Jamie simply because of the colour of his skin. If the argument was about Jamie profiting from something that was truly Caribbean that is different but don’t forget we’re in an era of globalisation, mass homogenisation and many things are becoming enhanced (or detracted) and modified from their origins.

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 21/08/2018 23:12

@ShirleyPhallus That's the issuse many people have with Kim Kardashian and the likes, it doesn't make wearing those hairsytles more acceptable. Many black woman have been told that their braided/locs hair is too ghetto or their natural afro hair isn't suitable for the workplace as it looks unkempt, but it's ok for a white woman to wear those styles as it's seen as fashion.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/08/2018 23:13

@SoupDragon I spend 98% of my time posting inconsequential stuff on Mumsnet. That's not the point.

LaurieMarlow · 21/08/2018 23:25

Many black woman have been told that their braided/locs hair is too ghetto or their natural afro hair isn't suitable for the workplace as it looks unkempt

This is racism, pure and simple and needs to be fought.

But it's not KK's fault. And what she does or doesn't do with her hair is in some senses irrelevant. If KK stops wearing her hair in braids, it doesn't make the situation better for those with Afro hair.

And that's before we get into a discussion about whether braids can be 'owned' by a particular culture.

The issue is racist attitudes to black women's hairstyles. Everything else is noise.

toomanychilder · 21/08/2018 23:30

Many black woman have been told that their braided/locs hair is too ghetto or their natural afro hair isn't suitable for the workplace as it looks unkempt, but it's ok for a white woman to wear those styles as it's seen as fashion

again, I call nonsense. Yes, black women are told their natural hair or braids etc are not acceptable, and that needs to change. But you're raving if you think white women with braids aren't told they are not suitable for work as well. Its not seen as ok and its not fashionable.

DameSquashalot · 21/08/2018 23:40

Levi Roots said he gets it wrong Evey now and then and he gets notified when he does.

TBH I think it would be a pisstake if Levi Roots deliberately did the same thing with the jerk rice. That would be completely deceitful.

abacucat · 21/08/2018 23:42

The producers of Dragons Den deliberately sought out a black entrepreneur for Dragons Den, as they were concerned at the lack of black applicants for the programme. They met Levi Roots at an event where he had a stall, and encouraged him to apply to Dragons Den.

OneShitNight · 22/08/2018 02:03

I can only make it to p 14 without resisting to bang my head on the bed board.

My word walkingdeadfangirl maybe time for a name change because after this you’ll be recognised on mn as ‘that thick as two short planks’ goady racist who’s wilfully NOT GETTING THE ACTUAL POINT!

MistressDeeCee · 22/08/2018 02:38

Vladimirs you're 100% on point. But you're mostly shouting into the void here. Racists just see a chance to say black people aren't appropriated, don't experience numerous microaggressions etc. They know all that - but they don't care.

The book "Why I've Stopped Talking To White People About Race" is good. & quite a few black women don't really engage with threads about racism and/or appropriation as uninterested in giving racists a chance to (in their minds) validate themselves.

I'm not saying you shouldn't engage tho, just explaining reasons why they're mostly ignored.

Those white people that claim JO's nonsense rice is ok ,but are probably having palpitations because they think there are too many black and brown people here, really aren't worth engaging with in the scheme of things

We aren't going to eat that jerk rice - let them get on with it. I remember the furore when Stella McCartney recently did her African traditional clothing outrageously expensive collection. I was quite looking forward to seeing the types who said "it's not cultural appropriation" doing the school run or work or shopping in full Asantehene cultural garb, complete with accessories...but, alas they were not to be seen for some strange reason... 😂

JOs rice is just a publicity game, some will buy some won't. But it won't set the culinary world on fire. Marco Pierre White's hilarious Jamaican rice & peas got nowhere did it? They'll go back to what they usually do and got famous for.

When I 1st joined MN a few years back it was around the time a dating programme was shown on TV, (Undateables?) and they showed the black man's dick. Strange that, as Id watched show before never seen a white man's dick on screen.

Cue MN thread going on & on in over-excitable 'oooh i wonder' fashion, then the black man usual nasty sexual stereotypes and innuendo, then being derogatory. Several people ended up reporting that thread, including me, but it was left to stand.

Imagine if I'd started a thread in opposite (stereotypical) vein saying white English men have small dicks and can't fuck.

Or if a man came on here talking about seeing a woman's vagina on TV then going on and on about the look and depth of it and how fuckable (or not) it looked wondering what it would feel like.

The outraged squeals of racism stereotyping nastiness sexism etc etc would be legion

That's the slackness of it all sometimes. Let them crack on

derxa · 22/08/2018 05:37

I hope his rice disappears without a trace.

Dorsetdays · 22/08/2018 06:25

Vladimirs. Earlier on in this thread you were telling us all that there is NO such thing as jerk rice and that JO is an idiot for that reason. Now you’re arguing that there IS such a thing as jerk rice, but only if a black person makes it.

You change your story to suit your argument and THATS why I said you can’t take your posts seriously.

You are also using examples of white oppression of black people that are among some of the most generalist bullshit I’ve ever heard and have not once backed any of it up when challenged I,e white women seeking out black men for their sexuality etc etc.

That’s usually just called having a massive chip on your shoulder. Perhaps if you spent less time just repeating the same crap over and over and actually came up with something that was true and based on actual facts rather than on ridiculous generalisations (white privilege) you might have more success in persuading people you’re actually slightly credible.

And btw simply writing massive, long posts that are full of the above rubbish doesn’t make you more intelligent than anyone else. If that’s all you’ve get then it ain’t much and in your words “I’ll say it again”...you can’t take your posts seriously

PPPMA · 22/08/2018 07:32

ethnic women

This thread has taken a funny turn hasn't it!

OP posts:
DameSquashalot · 22/08/2018 08:17

Indeed

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 08:45

@toomanychilder really it's nonsense is it?
Kim k wore her hair in braids and it was made out like she had invented the style herself, yet a black actress who wore her hair in exactly the same style was told she "looked unprofessional" and to "make her hair more sleek" when in all likelihood the actress has been wearing her hair like that since she was a child, so please tell me how anything I said is nonsense.
I have no problem with the way anyone wears their hair that's up to them. There was a question asked and I answered it, jist because you didn't like the answer doesn't mean it's bullshit.

CocoDeMoll · 22/08/2018 09:01

PPPMA ‘ethnic woman’ makes me think of someone who wears tie dye, and smells strongly of patchouli 😂

PPPMA · 22/08/2018 09:06

@CocoDeMoll it's a fucking ridiculous 'othering' term. What ethnicity do you need to be to be 'ethnic' 🤣

OP posts:
ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 09:08

Kim k wore her hair in braids and it was made out like she had invented the style herself,

I’m no fan of hers but exactly who or what publication suggested she had invented the style herself Confused

PPPMA · 22/08/2018 09:18

@ShirleyPhallus I think it was more a case of KK getting cane rows and calling them 'boxer braids'

It was quite funny and I do remember thinking 'wtf'

OP posts:
Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 09:21

@ShirleyPhallus There were many posts at the time showing Kim k inspired braids all over social media, maybe take a look over there or perhaps Google could help you?

Ithinkmymirrorslying · 22/08/2018 09:22

Yes I remember thinking wtf was a boxer braid?! I only know them as cainrows/cornrows Confused
