Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

I think black and brown people would be more inclined to put aside all that's been done to them if they didn't experience widespread racism for a couple of generations. Now there's a thought!

On a lighter note, is there any Jamaican/ Caribbean recipes that don't have a chilli or 5 thrown in? I've got 2 spice avoiders in the family, but I bet the kid will be happy with all of the mango.

apriljune12 · 20/08/2018 22:53

Of course it’s bollocks no one owns a recipie or a style of dress!

Dawn is a massive idiot and always was.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/08/2018 22:53

In Jamaica are Jamaicans banned from selling fish and chips?
What does that even prove ? 🤣

It doesn't prove a single thing. I am trying to find out what is so offensive about an English person selling Jamaican food and contrasting it with how ridiculous it would be if their were hysteria over a Jamaican person selling English food.

But there are never any explanations just howls from the professionally offended.

RebelRogue · 20/08/2018 22:54

So if he sold the exactly same rice tomorrow and named it punchy "shepherd's pie" rice there wouldn't be any wtf's or raised eyebrows at all? Really?

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 22:55

Apologies OP. I think I was one of the ones that derailed the thread. But that said all I wish is that your skin glows and your edges grow Grin

But I agree with the premise of this thread.

JayDot500 · 20/08/2018 22:55

Cheshire I hate pepper. My grandma always cooked Jamaican food minus the heat/pepper. Sometimes she boiled a scotch bonnet with the dish just for flavour, or removed the seeds.

DameSquashalot · 20/08/2018 22:55

I didn't think PPPMA sounded offended. Just baffled. With online discussions a tiny thing can become massive.

I deffo won't be buying the rice - I don't buy pre flavoured stuff. Also not keen on curry paste - always tastes of vinegar. Dolmio is disgusting too. One of the nicest things about eating in Italy is the fresh taste of the ingredients, so Dolmio is the total opposite.

I used to think Jamie Oliver was gorgeous.

RebelRogue · 20/08/2018 22:55

@Walkingdeadfangirl because it's not jamaican food and it doesn't use the ingredients of one?

StripySocksAndDocs · 20/08/2018 22:55

Who would buy it?

Bet Jamie oliver would; specially with a sloush of chilli sauce and eaten a glug of Jamaican jerk beer

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 22:56

The term "professionally offended" is just another term to silence and ridicule us. Oh well...

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 20/08/2018 22:56

Don't think Nigella was the first person in the entire world to add cream to carbonara.

Why would Nigella want to add cream to the Italian Police Force for? Wink

RebelRogue · 20/08/2018 22:56

The rice is jerk only in name...unlike Jamie.

FeralBeryl · 20/08/2018 22:57

Kinell @PPPMA I was only popping back to say thanks for explaining that the 'jerk' didn't even constitute real 'jerk' but I see the thread has taken a fucking weird different turn...

@LemonysSnicket What a wonderful topic, did you learn any hilariously random facts during your research? Was it limited to certain cultures or more generalised?

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 22:57

It doesn't prove a single thing. I am trying to find out what is so offensive about an English person selling Jamaican food and contrasting it with how ridiculous it would be if their were hysteria over a Jamaican person selling English food.

IT IS NOT JAMAICAN FOOD THAT IS THE POINT! Good lord.

@VladmirsPoutine I feel you and don't disagree with what you're saying. I choose not to engage with it however as I end up frustrated and disappointed. You sound like an interesting person however!

Ah thank you! You too Thanks

IF ITS NOT JAMAICAN FOOD THEN WHY ARE BRITISH JAMAICAN PEOPLE ANYONE OFFENDED BY IT? Good lord.

DameSquashalot · 20/08/2018 23:00

Have you read the OP?

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 23:01

@Walkingdeadfangirl 🤣🤣 why are you doing this too me? Sorry, it's too much!

But there are never any explanations just howls from the professionally offended.

It's been explained numerous times. The problem is not that he is selling carribean food. It's that he is taking a term relating to the preparation of meat using certain spices and applying it to a rice dish that doesn't even contain those spices.

Jerk relates to rubbing a spice mix into meat and letting it flavour the meat before you cook it.

Its not a generic term for carribean spiced food. You can't jerk rice!

It's like selling 'basted pasta' or 'marinated noodles' as a dry product.

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 23:02

*to not too Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 23:04

@Walkingdeadfangirl WHY ARE YOU SO FUCKING OBTUSE??

Myself and others have explained on this thread. FFS!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/08/2018 23:05

It's been explained numerous times

No actually it hasn't. Many people have explained that the UK makes food from every other country in the world that bares no resemblance to the food in its country of origin. Yet no one cares.

What is different about Jamaican food terminology that makes it different/special from any other country?

DameSquashalot · 20/08/2018 23:06

You're just being silly now Walking
