Jamie Oliver's 'jerk rice'

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 18:45

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation for calling a new product "punchy jerk rice".
The decision to label the microwavable rice "jerk" has been criticised, because the product doesn't contain many of the ingredients traditionally used in a Jamaican jerk marinade.

What we think of this?! As someone of Caribbean descent, who loves jerk, and raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow... not offended, just baffled!

AIBU to think that if you create something new, you call it something new...?

His not particularly healthy recipes. Dh and I wince at the amount of oil he uses and yes, being a bit on the chubby side, he's s bit of a hypocrite. His mate Jimmy is quite fit but unfortunately smug and self satisfied as well.

S0upertrooper · 20/08/2018 23:06

@PPPMA how many eyebrows do you have? Are they all raised at the same time or do they take turns? JO named his chain after Italian food-couldn't be any further from an authentic Italian, so not surprised he's hijacked another food culture.

I wait with baited breath for Jamie's Hootennany Haggis 😆

LaurieMarlow · 20/08/2018 23:06

So if he sold the exactly same rice tomorrow and named it punchy "shepherd's pie" rice there wouldn't be any wtf's or raised eyebrows at all? Really?

I'd think it was a bit odd. That his knowledge of the dish in question was lacking. Exactly the same as I think about the jerk rice.

However, given that neither 'jerk' nor 'shepherds pie' are trademarked words (correct me if I'm wrong), he would have done nothing wrong in either case. Just made a strange call.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 23:07

@PPPMA Amen! I thank you for not getting arsey with me for derailing your thread and you are decidedly a very reasonable angry black woman Grin

Wine cheers to you. I'm still battling on!

@VladmirsPoutine hey, there's only one person I'm close to getting arsey with and it ain't you! Wine

JayDot500 Thanks, I've never really had Jamaican food so was feeling iffy about bastardising it. Next time I get my hands on some mangoes I'll give it a go. I'm bloody hungry now!

RebelRogue · 20/08/2018 23:10

@LaurieMarlow well that's the main point of OP really. She raised an eyebrow and stated that whatever that rice is,is not jerk because you can't jerk rice.

Grimbles · 20/08/2018 23:10

No actually it hasn't

Yes it has. Most recently in the rest of my post you just snipped

PPPMA · 20/08/2018 23:12

I love Mumsnet lol. Night folks Wink

I will leave it there and agree to disagree.

I see no difference in what Jamie has done with Jerk rice than food companies have done with food from every other country in the world.

FYI I have no desire to taste his rice.

LaurieMarlow · 20/08/2018 23:14

Today 23:10 RebelRogue

well that's the main point of OP really. She raised an eyebrow and stated that whatever that rice is,is not jerk because you can't jerk rice.

The OP also raised the issue of CA.

What he's done is odd, a bit clueless even. But it's not CA.

CheshireChat · 20/08/2018 23:14

Maybe it was JO's attempt at veganising the dish? Though it would make more sense to do it to an aubergine or something and actually, you know, use some jerk marinade.

Grimbles · 20/08/2018 23:14

well that's the main point of OP really. She raised an eyebrow and stated that whatever that rice is,is not jerk because you can't jerk rice.

Exactly. But some people are so eager to start flinging around the whole 'ermagerd, professional complaining snowflake nazis' bullshit around they can't be bothered to actually take in what is actually being said.

JayDot500 · 20/08/2018 23:16

Actually, we had a white guy from 'up north' who was so interested in the various cultures he encountered in London and it so happened that Jamaican food was his favourite. When he left we made him a huge basket of Jamaican ingredients, seasonings and food to show how we appreciated his love for our culture. We encouraged him to cook the food himself. If he started jerking rice, we'd tell how we felt (like the time he ate his patty cold ha!). People want Jamie to know that jerking rice isn't a thing, nor should it ever be linked to what Jamaicans do.

ElaineRage · 20/08/2018 23:19

I think the real crime is how bad this tastes. Imagine making some fire chicken then getting a pouch of microwaved soggy rice on the side.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 23:25

This is exactly why I am no longer talking to white people about this.

I just don't feel it's my place to educate any longer. It's not my job. I am not a racist but white people just don't get it. There. They just don't.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/08/2018 23:28

I'm very proud of my European and English heritage but fucking hell - nothing else in life hits you harder than being 'othered'.

So fuck Jamie Oliver and his fucking jerk rice. He will ban everything in sight if it means lower-income families can't afford dinner.

It's not always about race, yes. But on this occasion he's taken something that patently he should not have.

Renarde1975 · 20/08/2018 23:31

Hmm - let me recall a infamous Oliver insult.

That fish lipped pouting, mockney talking, moped riding cunt.

Yes. That was it. Grin

So lovely is he, that he had one of his recipe books leaked online many years ago. I got the email with said attachment.

He's a twat. But boy did good with Turkey Twizzlers.

But that is all.

JayDot500 · 20/08/2018 23:34

Vlad The ones who want to understand do exist. My closest friends are not all black. We can have different attitudes but I'd never belittle someone else's life experience and perspective.

I find people are quick to poo poo what doesn't affect them, like Jamaicans and the wars that don't concern them Grin

I too agree that CA is a thing. Black people have to rise from within because truth is people fear us and fear our success. Not conspiracy BS, truth.

bluebell34567 · 20/08/2018 23:40

i like JO. i think he made a mistake, he couldnt think he was hijacking another cuisine.

Grimbles · 20/08/2018 23:42

I find people are quick to poo poo what doesn't affect them

As I said earlier, start a debate on the order that the cream and jam should be applied to a scone and watch us wipipo go mad.

Extra outrage points gained for asking if it's ok to use raspberry jam and whipped cream Grin
