This is probably going to sound really stupid. There’s this guy I sit next to in work who’s in his mid 40’s. He’s really nice and I get on really well with him 99% of the time.

But....he blows his nose SO loud and it drives me crazy! I have said to him about it before - I’m a civil servant and have to deal with public on the phone most days, there was one day he done it while I was on a call and the lady actually started laughing and said “for goodness sake” ! I was mortified and had to apologise on his behalf but I spoke to him about it when I came off the phone.

Today he done it again while I was on 3 different calls Angry and when I finished the 3rd call I took my head phone off and said (rather angrily) “do you really need to blow your nose like that when I’m on the phone?! It’s extremely loud you know” He looked at me rather surprised and said “oh, sorry!” Then didn’t speak to me for the rest of the day.

I know I should have approached it differently but I honestly find noises like nose blowing and extremely loud coughing and sneezing so rude!

Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed for such a thing?

Can you please come to my workplace and have a go at the Dolores Umbridge-alike who spends all day doing this really annoying “ahem” cough?

BeUpStanding · 20/08/2018 18:32

YANBU. Good for you telling him!

Grammar police alert.

madcatladyforever · 20/08/2018 18:40

My old boss used to sneeze and shriek at the same time in meetings It was totally unecessary and really used to piss us all right off.

Sj325 · 20/08/2018 18:41

Sorry grammar police - did. He did it.

DH used to roar atchoo while sneezing! I've taught him how to do it quietly now. Sometimes he forgets...

He roars while vomiting, too, sigh.

SugarNyx · 20/08/2018 18:45

I hate whistling, it’s the worst thing in the world and it’s just so bloody irritating - one of my colleagues does it constantly and I always tell him off, loudly haha. There’s no sensitive way of criticising someone’s irritating habits, you just have to go for it. He’ll recover!

This whole thread has made me lol. OH is trying to compose a twitter response and my giggling is annoying him. 🙄

yawning801 · 20/08/2018 18:48

My DF does this weird "Whoachoo" noise when he sneezes. Drives me up the bloody wall! You are not alone OP!

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 18:49

Seriously, though, it annoys me so much when people do the loud sneezing or nose blowing snorts, too.

fraxwuua · 20/08/2018 18:50

Maaaate. You should think yourself lucky-I'm married to a loud nose blower. And I swear I didn't know until after the wedding. It's grounds for divorce yeah?.....

YANBU my exH used to do this a lot, even when we Erie out for dinner.
At one point I put my foot down and said FFS I can no longer enjoy my meal having heard you empty the contents of your nose at the table. Vomit.

So fucking rude. Did he go to boarding school by any chance as these boys/men are the worst offenders for this in my experience. Apologies for the sweeping generalisation but I did say, in my experience!

glintandglide · 20/08/2018 19:00

It depends- it doesn’t really sound like you lost It tbh but maybe would’ve been better to speak to him in private

IdahoJones · 20/08/2018 19:00

There's no excuse for orifices, viscous droplets of fluids and NOISE combining in the office.

BeefyCakes · 20/08/2018 19:00

Look up misophonia it's the polar opposite of asmr.

Theweasleytwins · 20/08/2018 19:00

My DF sneezes/blows his nose so loud👃

Can imagine how annoying it is for you

Lalliella · 20/08/2018 19:01

NewBoot OP is talking about nose-blowing not sneezing. Are you that good at reading in your line of work?

User878929333 · 20/08/2018 19:04

Nose blowing to that degree is on the continuum of a sneeze...

Herculesfan · 20/08/2018 19:05

Oh for gods sake. Why are people so precious about normal bodily functions? Everyone needs to blow their nose at times, it’s just a thing that happens when you have a cold. YABU as far as I’m concerned
