To think Chandler and Monica have their priorities wrong in Friends?

I love them together, but they blow every penny of Chandler’s savings on the wedding, and a few episodes later Chandler isn’t being paid and they have to borrow thousands from Joey. It’s unreasonably annoyed me. Why would you spend your entire safety net on one day?! I know I'm over invested.

Which parts are homophobic?

It was more to do with the horror that Joey and Chandler would feel at the thought of appearing gay.

There’s a YouTube clip somewhere showing all the anti-gay references.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 19/08/2018 13:16

But Ross was the worst for sacking the male nanny. That was awful and not just 20 years on.

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:18

They don't spend all his saving on the wedding!

Monica wanted to, when her parents spent her 'wedding fund' on a beach house, but Chandler said no. Then later that day, he said 'it's OK, I said I would do anything to make you happy, so we will spend all my savings on our wedding... it's OK, we will have just 2 kids instead of 4 and pick our fave, and THEY will get to go to college...' Monica THEN said 'No, I don't want a big expensive wedding, I want a 'marriage.'

So they didn't spend all of Chandler's life savings on their wedding.

i watch FRIENDS way to much! Blush

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:19

*I watch FRIENDS way too much (not to!)

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:20

Oh FFS, it's not even REMOTELY homophobic! Hmm

Some people do love to find offence in ANYthing don't they?!

It's just a fucking funny show. Get a grip.

flowerythorns · 19/08/2018 13:20

The apartment was rent controlled. It was in the Nanna's name.

That was the explanation for affording it iirc?

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 19/08/2018 13:22

Here you go

50 minutes worth of gay jokes. You could argue that they’re not really anti-gay but definitely full of gay stereotyping.

Gender stereotypes abound too. I mean all that crap about Monica being obsessed with babies and weddings. Courtney Cox said it was a part of her character she couldn’t relate to.

But it’s still great Grin

Potterfriends · 19/08/2018 13:23

So they didn't spend all of Chandler's life savings on their wedding. No, but they must have spent the bulk of it if by the next series they’d ran out of savings and were borrowing from Joey.

I was going to mention rent control too! It is mentioned at the end, they said thanks to rent control the appartment was a 'steal'! I always thought it weird that given the sentimental attachment to that appartment and the supposed cheap rent that none of the others would take it at the end. But I realise laying all the keys down was just part of the story Grin

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:24

I do agree though, that it's odd that Chandler and Monica borrowed money from Joey, as they should have had savings (as they didn't spend it all on the wedding!)

And yeah Paul Rudd. hubba hubba

Yes that's right it was rent controlled and in the nannas name. This was explained in the flashback episode where Monica first meets joey and she explains to him how she can afford it.

It's also explained in a layer episode where Mr Treeger makes joey dance with him. He threatens to grass monica and Rachel in. They're basically living in the apartment illegally.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 19/08/2018 13:26

Do calm down. It’s perfectly possible to see the flaws of something whilst really liking it at the same time.

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:26

Wow someone needs to get a life if they feel the need to waste time 'compiling' all the gay jokes..

Jeeeeeez. Wink

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:28

Of course I will calm down because you told me to @ifyouseeritamoreno

Jesus wept.

Could you BE more patronising?

Crunchymum · 19/08/2018 13:28

I saw this episode again recently and view it the same as PP. He has enough money for "scenario A" but he refused to use all the money. He then had a change of heart but Monica had realised that she wanted the marriage not just the wedding.

So I always saw it as they didn't use all the savings?

Ross is a very hated figure on MN. I agree in principle that he is a dick but all my fave episodes are Ross' Shock (spray tan /white teeth / PIVOT/ my sandwich)

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:29

And here's a newsflash for you.

People are going to post all sorts of differing opinions and views on threads on message forums.......... Shock

You may not like some of them.

Maybe online forums are not for you Rita?!

Bunnybobtails · 19/08/2018 13:29

I completely agree that Phoebe should have ended up with David, he was her lobster! Grin

VanillaSugar · 19/08/2018 13:30

My DH says he's Ross from Friends. Should I LTB?

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:31

Ignoring the baiters now......... Wink

Pretty much what I said @crunchymum Smile

I also love the one with ross's tan AND teeth and the PIVOT episode. Grin

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:31

Must admit I also liked Phoebe better with David.

Crunchymum · 19/08/2018 13:33

I also love Mike. Phoebe only became bearable after he turned up Grin

pouraglasshalffull · 19/08/2018 13:34

Yes its a made up show, made for entertainment purposes not as a real life model

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 13:36

EXACTLY 'pour.' So many people getting all het up about supposedly 'offensive' comments, when it's just a bloody fictional comedy.

Potterfriends · 19/08/2018 13:39

Yes its a made up show, made for entertainment purposes not as a real life model It isn’t real?!

On to the episodes where Rachel’s in love with Joey now. I hated that storyline.

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 19/08/2018 13:45

I think it should have ended up with the couples as

Monica and Richard
Chandler and Kathy
Ross and Charlie
Rachel and Gavin (I know nothing much happened there, I just think he's hot)
Phoebe and David
Joey and no one.
