To think Chandler and Monica have their priorities wrong in Friends?

I love them together, but they blow every penny of Chandler’s savings on the wedding, and a few episodes later Chandler isn’t being paid and they have to borrow thousands from Joey. It’s unreasonably annoyed me. Why would you spend your entire safety net on one day?! I know I'm over invested.

And how that self righteous, nasty, superannuated old hippy snagged Paul Rudd is a complete suspension of reality. As you can tell from my user name I am over invested .

AlansLeftMoob · 19/08/2018 12:34

They didn't blow all their savings. They decided on "a marriage, not a wedding".

I'm a Superfan but I can not get over how much I hate Ross Geller. #Notallmen

Aragog · 19/08/2018 12:37

They should all be watching Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars.....

In my experience all the teens are watching them too, but still rewatch friends lots.

It's easy to knock Friends for what we now see as homophobia. However, as swomen who was 13 when first started, there were quite a few things about the show that were groundbreaking at that time - just perhaps not issues tackled with the sensitivity we've now come tackled of expect. For example the Lesbian wedding - the fact that it even happened at all back in the mid 90s on a mainstream show was new. Yes it came with a bunch of terrible 'jokes' though

NobodyToVoteForNow · 19/08/2018 12:40

Sorry that post isn't very clear but you get the jist

butterflyrabbit · 19/08/2018 12:40

Friends got so much better when they embraced Ross being a loser rather than try and make him out as a decent guy. Re watching it I think David Schwimmer is actually the best comedy actor out of all of them though. He gets Ross's whiny irritating qualities across in a really funny way.

Agreed about Paul Rudd!

PaulRuddislush · 19/08/2018 12:42

David Schwimmer was very good at physical comedy agreed.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/08/2018 12:43

butter I know what you mean. He plays the role exceedingly well to the point that he will always be Ross. I thought they were all awful people. Even Phoebe - she was ingratiating. However, much as I quite dislike the show, my family and I always have to shout "PIVOT!!!!!" whenever one of us is moving a piece of furniture.

youarenotkiddingme · 19/08/2018 12:48

I always liked Mike and Phoebe scenes.

I interpreted Phoebe character as one that never felt like an insider but embraced being the outsider - but when Mike came along she changed. He gave her a sense of self worth.

Rachel needs a medal for putting up with Ross! Although agree the actor himself is brilliant at physical comedy - his head and facial movements were brilliant.

Although there are a lot of things in there that in today's world are not Pc it was actually a well thought out comedy imo. Even to the point that someone moved in the end away from the group and the affect on the dynamics.

It's like watching OFAH. How they got away with most jokes is beyond me. Except back then it wasn't as unPC as it is now and people were more accepting of comedy slightly overstepping the boundaries.

Potterfriends · 19/08/2018 12:48

They want to borrow money from joey because chandler quits his job to be an intern at the ad agency for no money. But surely if they had any savings left they’d have borrowed from that first?

I agree with the PP who said this episode makes no sense though. I’m another few episodes along and Chandler’s paying $600 for a night in a hotel suite for him and Ross.

Which parts are homophobic? I'm not being funny I genuinely can't remember!

ArmySal · 19/08/2018 12:50

Agree about Paul Rudd, still looks good now.

Phoebe annoys me irrationally.

FrayedHem · 19/08/2018 12:51

That's the thing with sitcoms, they require a large dose of suspending your disbelief. The characters had moving birthdays, would have probably been sacked for the amount of time they were in the coffee shop rather than at work etc. Buying the house was a means of wrapping up the series with the added bonus of the reappearance of the wonderful Janice.

Though my most loathed episode was the one where Joey and Chandler left Ben on the bus then went to the dept to collect him. So I'm just as guilty!

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 19/08/2018 12:53

But surely if they had any savings left they’d have borrowed from that first? one would think so but some people won't use savings but are happy to "borrow" (usually take as they don't pay back) other peoples money. My sister has 8 grand in her and her boyfriend's savings. When my mum asked her get a couple of bottles of pop for the bbq (sister was the only one to show up empty handed) she came to me pleading poverty and I had to bloody buy them! Regularly asks to borrow money from me, a single parent, I work full time but annual income 22k whereas their combined income is around 50k!

Nonibaloni · 19/08/2018 12:58

Ok, if we’re going there.
Irrational annoyance at friends: Phoebes wedding, ok they were snowed in but there was no mention of her family, brother and triplets not even a call to say they can’t make it. It bugs me because they made such a hooha about their wedding (giving the money to charity etc) I think they would have rescheduled in favour of having family there. And is nice as mike was clearly David was a better man. He never tried to change her and I think remained faithful to her in Minsk. Team David.

mayaknew · 19/08/2018 13:01

Another episode that really does my head in as well is the one where Chandler kisses kathy. Ok Chandler really was a bit out of order HOWEVER... Kathy was stuck at his apartment with Chandler waiting on him because he was running late... FROM A DATE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN!!!

And for that matter, he massively over-reacts when Chandler kisses his sister earlier in the season as well.

I think too much about this I think Blush

butterflyrabbit · 19/08/2018 13:04

Yeah Chandler and Kathy should have stayed together

liverbird10 · 19/08/2018 13:04

I loved Friends in the 90s while in my late teens. I can't watch it these days, it just irritates the he'll out of me.

Rigamorph · 19/08/2018 13:06

Wasn't this all some time ago now?! Wink
Oh and I am right there with you all, I can understand each and every criticism that has been levelled at the series, but I will still love to watch it again and again. And again 😁
Oh and WRT the original question: both of them are pretty insecure and neurotic in their own way. It's not surprising that inconsistencies appear in their actions!

liverbird10 · 19/08/2018 13:07

Never could stand Ross or Rachel though, and what on earth was all the fuss about that nondescript haircut?!

PositiveVibez · 19/08/2018 13:10

Which parts are homophobic? I'm not being funny I genuinely can't remember!

General jokes about being gay and how horrified they are at the thought of it, but a particular episode is the one where Ross puts on an old college reunion website that chandler is gay for a hilarious joke 🙄 and and in response to it, chandler put on the website that Ross is dead.

MardAsSnails · 19/08/2018 13:10

I really want to go to Minsk. Purely because of David.

CurlyCurlyCurly · 19/08/2018 13:12

I remember reading a really entertaining blog post which worked out where the apartment was and using NY prices, pointed out that there was no way in hell a chef and a masseuse could have afforded their place.

It's all part of the fun :)

CurlyCurlyCurly · 19/08/2018 13:12

I always feel terribly sad that Yemen is most commonly known for 'Yemen Road, Yemen'.

MeyMary · 19/08/2018 13:13

I haven't watched all season. I think I stopped when Ross and Rachel broke up after he couldn't respect her career/was so jealous over her having male friends?

But I might continue to watch a bit more when I have the time. (Currently don't.)

But I really don't like Ross. The one time he felt like a sort of sympathetic character was when his ex-wife (or was it her wife?) told him that they talked about him as sperm doneor during the pregnancy...
