AIBU to get pissed off with all the Autumn and Winter "cosy" people

Now that the evenings are getting darker I feel sad that summer is ending .. and pissed off with the "cosy" people !! I hate winter .. what is "cosy" about bumbling about in the dark and scraping ice off your car, getting fat with stodgy food , seeing all the shit sentimental Christmas TV adverts and being pale , corpse like and with drizzled on hair !!! .. this is light hearted but I just don't get it ! .... I've stayed away from the " We hate summer" threads as instructed as they were not for me ... so now it's my turn !!

I am sad that summer is over. It might be August, but it definitely feels autumnal now.

I'm pretty sure that people who romanticise about autumn live somewhere where autumn is usually sunny and crisp. I would love autumn if it was sunny and crisp, but reality for me and most people is that it isn't. My autumns are usually grey and damp and cold - kind of damp cold that creeps into your bones.

One of the best holidays I ever had was a week in New England one October. Now, if our autumns were like that I would be over the moon.

I agree with a pp that people who love winter probably don't have to drive to and from work in the dark, don't suffer the disruptions when it snows and love being reminded that Christmas is around the corner from August onwards.

drastard I hate cycling in the mud. Why do you like it?

RiverTam · 20/08/2018 09:39

Soup Grin well, there you go, same place, different views. I've found the summer excruciating, to the extent that if this is summers to come, I will after 45+ years be leaving London. I couldn't bear it and I certainly wasn't out and about, full of energy, exploring new places like Rat.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 20/08/2018 09:47

I'm with you OP, I've really enjoyed the heatwave as its realistically not something that happens every year, in fact most years summer gets rained off. Autumn is ok because of the colours in the leafs but once they've dropped it's just grim and relentless rain and mist and near constant darkness. Between Christmas and the beginning of the spring is the most depressing time, only snow can make it slightly interesting. I loved getting out of my jeans and floating around in a maxi dress this summer.
Anyway it's still August! I'm on holiday at the moment and hoping for a bit of sunshine at some point this week! Autumn watch doesn't officially start until September.

I hate being rushed from one season to another. Autumn lovers can't wait to start talking about the nights getting longer from about the second week in August; Christmas lovers will be banging on about it any day now; Summer lovers have to rush out on Boxing Day to book their Summer holiday and so on.

Was life always like this or have we all been persuaded by commercial businesses to constantly live in the future and ignore the present?

SerenDippitty · 20/08/2018 09:53

Spring seems to have disappeared entirely. The moment there is a hint of warmth in the early spring sunshine people start dressing like it’s summer!

RiverTam · 20/08/2018 09:55

Yes, you're pribavly right! I've enjoyed it being pleasant but I wouldn't really have considered autumn yet if I had t seen a couple of threads about it! Though picking blackberries last week fud make me feel quite autumnal.

I shall cease to comment on these threads and enjoy the moment.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/08/2018 09:55

"I loved getting out of my jeans and floating around in a maxi dress this summer."

Same here. Sadly, I am back in jeans now Sad

speakout · 20/08/2018 09:58

I adore Autumn.

I love the coziness, hot chocolate, crackle in the air, bonfires, Halloween, the run up to Christmas- It's all lovely.

But then I love Summer too,

There is no season that I hate.

CharltonLido73 · 20/08/2018 09:58

Well I am hoping we'll have an Indian summer well into the autumn months. My ideal would be rain overnight on a regular basis, and warm, sunny days.

I can't bear the lack of light once the summer goes; those short, dank "non-days" that never quite manage to defeat the grey gloom and get going. Once we hit autumn I'm just longing for the springtime to come around again.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/08/2018 10:00

I love autumn but only if it’s the crisp sky blue kind. And let’s face it, there’s not much of that.

I’m with you op. I love summer and I’ve particularly loved this one. Eating outside, actually getting a chance to wear summer clothes, light mornings and evenings. It’s been fabulous. I hope we get more and it carries on into September

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 20/08/2018 10:04

I like everything from September to Christmas but come January 1st I’m over it and wish we could just fast forward to April 1st and have spring.

Aragog · 20/08/2018 10:16

Autumn and winter means dark nights and cold rain, leading to snow.

Cold and wet for me = pain.
I have arthritis. It makes a huge difference. It will mean more medication and an increase in cortisone injections just to make me pain free. I really don't like cold damp weather, which is what our autumn and winter represent in reality rather than the crisp golden look we see in magazines!

Dark for dh = more likely to 'down'; a bit like SAD for him I think.

When we retire we plan to spend much of the cold dark months out of this country, somewhere warm, I think!

Aragog · 20/08/2018 10:25

People's idea of crisp Autumn and cosy Winter v reality in the U.K.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/08/2018 10:33

Aragog I feel your pain. We have had 2
months of nice weather and now face 10 months of grey damp cold weather. There are no seasons.

I was up north yesterday and ds actually got what I was talking about when I said I was continually damp and the sky was always grey.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/08/2018 10:40

Sorry phone playing up. I was born around the area and had always told DC how it was always grey and damp whatever time of year it was. Ds commented that his face, although it hadn't been raining was constantly wet all day

SunflowerJo08 · 20/08/2018 10:41

I don't like the loss of sunlight but I do love September and October, everything starts gradually slowing down, changing colour, and so on. I really suffered health wise during the heat wave. Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons, except in April when it rains and stupid people wail "Where did the summer go?".

wanderings · 20/08/2018 13:42

@SoupDragon Is that watching freezing netball and rugby, or playing them? My sympathies if it's watching them. I like playing sport in cold weather, although I have to keep removing layers as I warm up.

Flippetydip · 20/08/2018 13:46

I'm with you OP. It only seems about a month ago we had the snow - it was such a disastrously, long, horrible, wet winter this year that it's taken me until now to get over it. It lasted well into normal Spring months. So no, I refuse to accept that autumn is on its way - the sun will return and we will have a long Indian summer well into October just to right the wrongs of last winter.

Plus, IT'S ONLY AUGUST - what's with all the Winter and Christmas threads at the moment?!

ilovesooty · 20/08/2018 13:50

I still have my main summer holiday to come thankfully - and it will be a lot warmer than it is here.

moralminority · 20/08/2018 13:54

I always feel I don't have another winter in me. I have winter fear now, the cold, horrible weather is looming. I always perk up after the clocks change back and am full of hope of lovely weather to come.

hudyerwheesht · 20/08/2018 14:06

Autumn I don't mind too much; still sunny but more bearable with cool, crisp days spent walking through leaves and getting back into stodgy, warming food again after months of salads and bbq's. Plus I can sleep at night and get some peace as the kids go back to school.

Winter however with its endless cold, wet, dark, expensive months can fuck right off.

I never got all the Summer hating on here, we get enough cold months every year but apparently good weather is a pain in the arse Hmm(and yes I was in one of the hottest areas)

Sallystyle · 20/08/2018 14:06

Did the snow last for 8 weeks straight like the heatwave did?

its not the autumn lovers who are consumed by greed.

I can't believe I even read this. Yes, we had 8 weeks of sun and heat. The best summer for many years. Eight weeks, followed by the rest of the year dark, dull, damp and grey. I don't think it is greedy to want more than a few weeks, or even 8 weeks of our favourite weather Grin

The winter lovers certainly get their preferred weather for the majority of the year and us summer lovers are lucky if we get a few decent weeks.

It must be horrible if you hate summer but when people moan about how awful it is I just think they are lucky to have their preferred weather for months on end. I have to feel miserable and cold for most of the year. And no, putting on another jumper does not help me warm up all over, and snuggling under blankets only work when I am not working or have to get up to do shit.

idonthaveatattoo · 20/08/2018 14:10

Consumed by greed Grin

I do think it’s a bit miserable to whine so much about weather.

Leontine · 20/08/2018 17:24

I’m already starting to feel anxious about the nights drawing in.

andypandy60 · 20/08/2018 17:34

As soon as the leaves start changing colour I feel sad, then I can't wait until February when buds start to form and then the bulbs start breaking through the earth.
