Aibu to want to buy unisex baby clothes?

DH and I don't want to find out the sex of our baby, partly because we want a surprise and partly because it's just not important to us either way. However the shops selling baby clothes seem to insist that everyone finds out! I can't find any nice unisex stuff ANYWHERE. It's either plain white and boring or is pink and floral or blue with cars. AIBU to think that the shops should have more unisex options? I feel like I'm being forced to find out because people keep telling me they want to buy stuff but can't because they don't know what it is. Angry

I got heaps of unisex stuff in asda, m&co, boots, matalan. Admittedly it's white/grey/mint but your baby doesn't care what colour they wear

lornathewizzard · 16/08/2018 10:40

Loads of places have nice colourful stuff - Sainsbury's and Primark to name two. They're more expensive but the Scandi brands tend to be more unisex too

lornathewizzard · 16/08/2018 10:41

And you know blue or pink can be unisex too

Bluelady · 16/08/2018 10:41

Just buy enough bland stuff - actually the nicest - to keep you going for the first few weeks. And congratulations on doing it the old fashioned way, I feel really sorry for all those people who miss out on that wonderful surprise at the birth.

We live in a rural area so limited choice except for online. I've not heard of m and co but I'll see if they have a website. I love all the joules stuff but it's all gender stereotyped

Mamas and Papas have loads of neutral things...
Their website is good

liz70 · 16/08/2018 10:44

I didn't find out beforehand with any of my three DDs, just bought a few white, cream, mint, yellow, apricot clothes etc. to last for the first few weeks. Babies outgrow stuff so quickly anyway.

tenbob · 16/08/2018 10:45

Although thinking back, mine lived in white babygrows for the first 6 weeks
Also, H&M and Gap do great newborn things
My favourite things were:
the trousers with feet from H&M - no one needs to faff about putting socks on a new born
The wrap-over vests so you don't have to try and get them over their heads
The Gap zip-up babygrows - easy that fumbling with poppers in the night

I'm one of those poor souls that did find out Hmm but I don't like strongly gendered clothes and also struggled a bit - Asda had some neutral but colourful things with animal prints. H&M make some of my favourite baby clothes and lots of them very unisex. Both of those can be bought online.

You do realise it's still a surprise don't you... you just find it out 20 weeks earlier. Hmm

I found the little bird range at Mothercare to have some gorgeous brightly colouring baby bits. I also really liked things from m&co.

eurochick · 16/08/2018 10:51

Mamas and papas and John Lewis were good for neutrals when we wanted them.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 16/08/2018 10:55

I got DS2 loads of white clothes with animals on from Asda. We knew what sex he was, but there was a dearth of boys' clothes. Cue 3 months of "is it a boy or a girl?"

ambereeree · 16/08/2018 10:55

I'm with you OP. I didn't find out and it was a wonderful surprise. M&s do some nice unisex as well as polarn o pyret. Also picked up a few nice bits in h&m.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 16/08/2018 10:56

I’m one of the ‘poor mums’ too. I still had my surprise, just earlier than the birth. I’m also really glad I had that early surprise as I found out I don’t really get that ‘rush of love and happiness’ at the birth - instead I kind of go into shock and numbness, and then post natal depression... so being able to feel a stronger connection earlier really helps. Poor me.

With regards to the unisex clothing, it really is a bit rubbish ime, or was... I haven’t done baby clothes for over a decade now, I’d have hoped it would’ve improved with the modern view on genders though!

Camsie30 · 16/08/2018 10:57

Mothercare have good unisex options, the Mylene Klass range in particular

TruffleShuffles · 16/08/2018 10:58

Are you only looking at things specifically labelled as unisex? I know I’m having a girl but I think about half of the baby grows and sleepsuits I’ve bought are labelled as baby boys. It’s ridiculous as all baby girl clothes seem to be pink and floral which I don’t like at all but baby boys seems to cover every other colour that exists so fits either sex really.

I agree that the range of specifically unisex labelled clothing is really poor and I’ve struggled to buy things for friends who haven’t found out the sex of their babies.

Camsie30 · 16/08/2018 10:58

Also Gap have their 40% off sale now, I just ordered a baby grow with peas and carrots on it!!

TruffleShuffles · 16/08/2018 10:59

Oh and to add boots does a really good range of sleep suits in bright colours that would be suitable for either sex.

Theweasleytwins · 16/08/2018 10:59

Saindburys have some cute things- elma the rainbow elephant onesies etc (think i got the name right?)

Asda did last time i looked

Primani have some harry potter stuff too 😍

Deshasafraisy · 16/08/2018 11:00

H&M is great for unisex stuff

inquiquotiokixul · 16/08/2018 11:00

Dinosaurs and spaceships are definitely gender neutral and there's plenty of clothes with those on for babies. I hope you wouldn't refrain from buying clothes with such excellent themes if you were expecting a girl?

BuntyII · 16/08/2018 11:01

Little Bird stuff is fairly gender neutral. Tbh I think you haven't got a lot to worry about, when the baby is here and they've sicked over yet another outfit you won't care if it's white, blue, pink or hideous floral 1970s patterned as long as it's clean.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/08/2018 11:02

YANBU, we didn't know what we were having either and it really struck me how everything is divided by sex, even things like prams and cots.

I don't really think about what sex something is labelled as, I like DD to have a variety of colours.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 16/08/2018 11:02

Disappointingly, it actually seems to have got worse notasgreen, according to some people I know with older children. What really horrified me is how horribly impractical so many of the clothes for baby girls are - some of the flouncy, fiddly dresses looked so uncomfortable for newborns, and then actively restrictive for an older and more mobile baby.
