Aibu to want to buy unisex baby clothes?

DH and I don't want to find out the sex of our baby, partly because we want a surprise and partly because it's just not important to us either way. However the shops selling baby clothes seem to insist that everyone finds out! I can't find any nice unisex stuff ANYWHERE. It's either plain white and boring or is pink and floral or blue with cars. AIBU to think that the shops should have more unisex options? I feel like I'm being forced to find out because people keep telling me they want to buy stuff but can't because they don't know what it is. Angry

OP as GKite and lornathewizzard said there are lots of stores you can buy unisex baby clothes from - you just may have to do buy online possibly using click and collect as unfortunately there is a now a tendency for shops, even in towns and cities, not to stock everything.

In addition if you know people who have had babies in the past few years who aren't pregnant themselves they will lend you stuff. Even if they know the sex of their child a lot of them will have clothes which are actually not sex specific.

(I have clothes from Asda, Primark and Sainsburys and was going to buy more but was lent some. )

I am due in November and we don’t know the gender - we got lots of lovely things in Asda at the weekend, good value and I’m told they wash well. There is a unisex section but also some lovely gender neutral things in both the boys and girls sections if you have a look. There are also loads of gorgeous gender specific clothes in Asda for when the baby comes (especially in the girls section, embroidered corduroy dresses and the like 😍) so looking forward to buying some more when the time comes!

Nothisispatrick · 16/08/2018 11:19

My interpretation of unisex or gender neutral is a bit different. We got our baby girl (due in October) things from both boy and girl ranges. She has floral sleep suits, lots of blue stuff, animal themed stuff (which often seems to be in the boys section Hmm). Dinosaurs aren’t just for boys.

Nothisispatrick · 16/08/2018 11:21

pink and floral or blue with cars

Any reason your baby can’t have both?

HorseDonkey · 16/08/2018 11:22

Mothercare have some nice things in at the moment. I found out what I was having but was doubting it so bought a lot of unisex stuff (they were right though!)

Cariadxx · 16/08/2018 11:22

It seems the supermarkets seem to be the ones to try. @truffle I've looked at all baby clues not just labelled unisex. I'm not as bothered about what it looks like as I realise they'll grow out of it and vomit over it but I know family and friends are struggling and moaning to us about how we should find out the sex so they can but stuff Hmm . I'm sure when my sister was expecting 4 years ago it was much easier than this to buy unisex stuff, even just white with a little bear on the front for example

OP try La Redoute, especially in the sale. John Lewis had some gorgeous neutral bits too. We're having a boy but I don't subscribe to the pink and blue thing. I'm also not a fan of lots of white and cream, we've managed to find quite a lot of brightly coloured gender neutral things. Although my SIL is convinced I knew I was having a boy because of some of the things I bought before we knew, I would've happily put them on a girl, but she is a pink and sparkly person

PurpleRobe · 16/08/2018 11:27

I like the scandi brands for unisex (buy gifts for friends)

www.polarnopyret.co.uk Have some great uni designs

I feel really sorry for all those people who miss out on that wonderful surprise at the birth.

Please don't feel sorry for me. I've had three healthy babies. Knowing in advance which genitals they had took absolutely nothing away from those moments.

Bluelady · 16/08/2018 11:30

You don't know, you don't have the other way to compare it with. And it's only my opinion, ffs!

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 16/08/2018 11:32

I agree, I was looking for a gift for a new little boy in the family. I'm not generally a blue for boys/pink for girls type. Basically everything either had dinosaurs, sharks and diggers on it, or was pink and floral. I really wanted to find him something a bit more neutral so it wasn't all "ITS A BOY!!!" - in the end I bought him a cuddly toy instead.

When my DCs were born over 10 years ago I bought some brightly coloured babygros and vests, neutral fairisle patterned knits etc and they all wore the same things, boys and girls over the years. I really liked seeing them wear something their siblings had worn years before, like a link that kept them all together as babies in my mind. Sad

When DD was a bit older I struggled to find her clothes that weren't totally pink and insipid so she just wore a lot of her DBs' hand-me-downs. Pumpkin Patch was one of my fave shops, but I don't know if its still around.

unicornchaser · 16/08/2018 11:37

@Bluelady that's a bit offensive and close minded to 'feel sorry, for us who find out. Doesn't make the birth of your child any less wonderful just because we know what gender they are

Anyway the point of the thread, I have been given lots of hand me downs which yes are more directed to the particular gender but got loads of more neutral stuff from Asda, Sainsbury's and M&S. mostly white & greys with lots of teddy bear or animal prints or Disney stuff in a variety of colours but given I don't like yellows then they work for me Smile

BuntyII · 16/08/2018 11:37

'I feel really sorry for all those people who miss out on that wonderful surprise at the birth.'

This is the funniest thing I have read today Grin

OutPinked · 16/08/2018 11:37

It depends what you consider unisex I suppose. I know the sex of this baby but I am more than willing to put him in his sisters hand me downs Grin. Some floral patterns but he will rock it. I have bought lots of stuff others would not consider unisex but I definitely do. H&M have a great range of ‘neutral’ stuff, I’ve bought lots of that too.

randomsabreuse · 16/08/2018 11:42

Sainsbury's tends to have some neutral animal prints. Might well be "deemed" boys' clothes as not pink and frilly...

My DD got taken for a boy a fair few times head to toe in pink- after that I stopped caring so don't worry about other people!

NonJeNeRegretteRien · 16/08/2018 11:49

I got loads of neutral stuff at Asda. I dress my girl in lots of stuff from the boy section anyway as I like the baby joggers they do - seem comfier than little girl leggings with bows and buttons on. Also baby chinos are unisex as far as i’m concerned.

If people want to think she’s a boy I’m not bothered, she’s comfy and I don’t think at 2mos old she’s going to get a complex about it. 🤷‍♀️

AlmostAlwyn · 16/08/2018 11:50

The Little Bird collection at Mothercare has a lot of great brightly coloured options. Also, look up the Let Clothes Be Clothes site/Facebook page, where you should be able to find some recommendations :)

sar302 · 16/08/2018 11:56

John Lewis Boy/Girl range. Some gorgeous unisex stuff

furryleopard · 16/08/2018 11:56

Scandi brands are my favourite, there are lots of independent shops selling online or you can buy 2nd hand via facebook groups or ebay.

Aldi have their baby event on this week as well and have some lovely unisex vests and babygrows in.

Howhot · 16/08/2018 11:57

I've never ever had a problem finding unisex stuff. Where are you looking op? All high Street stores and supermarkets have a good selection of unisex in my experience

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 16/08/2018 11:58

A lot of the scandi brands are unisex, bright and colourful - and at least don't distinguish whether that car dress should go on a boy or girl.

Try Moromini, JNY, Maxomorra, Duns

LaPufalina · 16/08/2018 12:03

We didn't find out either and found jojo maman bebe good; ducks, clouds, rainbows, farmyard animals. Also little bird at mothercare and Gap (this was 20 months ago but will use them again for impending DC2!)

nellierose · 16/08/2018 12:04

I got some beautiful unisex baby grows in NEXT in lovely colours

There wasn’t anywhere near as much in the unisex range as the boys/girls, and I agree it is just a sea of pink and blue in baby clothes shops (high street ones anyway)

To get a good selection I think you just have to go in lots of different shops unfortunately

LaurieMarlow · 16/08/2018 12:10

I feel really sorry for all those people who miss out on that wonderful surprise at the birth.

Oh fgs. There's always one. Hmm

It's only one of two options you know. A 'surprise' would be having a baby dinosaur.

I have two children, I found out with one and not the other. Both birth experiences were very special.
