After all this recent stuff. Please could we have someone else and make labour electable again. Why is he still there and do we think he still will be for the forseeable?

Genuine question - was it anti-Semitic when, in 2004 Jack Straw attended the funeral of and laid a wreath on the grave of Yasser Arafat? If not, why not.

Also - was it terrorist sympathising when Tony Blair attended the funeral of Ariel Sharon in 2014, when an Israeli commission had found Sharon "personally responsible" for the massacre of 3,500 Palestinian and Lebanese refugees in the Sabra and Shatila camps in 1982. If not, why not?

Lastly, how can Jeremy Corbyn be both "populist" and yet seeming so unpopular he can't win a general election (unlike say Ed Miliband and his "centrist" policies)? I'm confused!

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:13

Also can people please explain whether they think Lord Sheikh, a Conservative - who also attended the wreath laying ceremony and Palestinian conference in Tunisia, is also "anti-Semitic" ? If not, why not?

RayneDance · 16/08/2018 22:15

Don't forget Blair love letters to colonal gaddafi

GerdaLovesLili · 16/08/2018 22:19

ZacharyQuacks Welcome to Mumsnet! It's so nice when lots of new people all choose to congregate on a political thread isn't it?

Could it be because someone always draws the short straw and has to go to ex-political-leaders' funerals to avoid a diplomatic incident. Maybe it's not quite the same sort of situation.

Justanotherlurker · 16/08/2018 22:20

ZacharyQuacks

You clearly do not understand the term populist with regards to politics, it might help you going forward to get a grasp of this before you start parroting the momentum authorised aurgements that has been circulated the last week re Blair etc

SillySallySingsSongs · 16/08/2018 22:23

ZacharyQuacks Welcome to Mumsnet! It's so nice when lots of new people all choose to congregate on a political thread isn't it?

It is isn't it.

Perhaps they would like to explain why the Tory peer correctly declared the trip in the Lords register, yet Corby didn't in the MPs which is against the rules.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/08/2018 22:26

I don’t know much about Lord Sheikh apart from him being critical of Boris Johnson regarding the burqa/niqab article

The story highlights Corbyn’s dubious links/choices of those he deals with this is one of many and given his lack of dealing with anti semitism within his party it’s another issue that once again brings up the question is he right to lead the Labour Party or be PM

And the answer is no

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:26

Hola GerdaNot new to Mumsnet I'm afraid, just namechanged recently - I remember Mexican house thief and Gooseberry bush woman among others (waste far too much time on here), sorry to disappoint you and your implication that I joined just to defend JC!

Not really a plausible explanation is it? Particularly as Tony Blair wasn't leader in 2014, so no drawing of short straws!

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:28

Just I understand it perfectly. You have provided no explanation, just a lazy ad hominem attack. Try harder.

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:29

Silly because as the investigation revealed - the cost of the trip was below the threshold for claiming. Obviously JC does not travel in luxury!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/08/2018 22:32

Ffs are Jack Straw and Tony Blair attend those funerals did so as they were officially representing the UK

When you are a senior member of parliament or head of state you have a role that is expected it’s politics

Being on the back bench rubbing shoulders with dubious characters and organisations as Corbyn has done for years has not enhanced any peace process

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:33

Enthusiasm if you look at the twitter link to the Victoria Derbyshire show, that another poster posted up thread, you can see the extensive steps taken by JC to address anti-semitism in the party, including appointing a QC, an inquiry, completely overhauling the disciplinary process among others. Can you tell me which steps the Conservative party have taken to address anti-semitism and islamaphobia (particularly in light of Boris Johnson's recent comments, Zac Goldsmiths hideous mayoral campaign and lately Lord Sheikh attending the same "anti-Semitic" event as Corbyn)? If they haven't done so, can you tell me why not ?

GerdaLovesLili · 16/08/2018 22:35

That's good then, because it's very hard not to imagine the international call sign going out with whatever the equivalent of the bat-symbol is for Corbyn flashing over the internet. Klaxon klaxon klaxon! "MN is discussing the Sainted Jeremy again! Let's pile on and explain why they're wrong to question whether swing voters will vote for him."

What a relief!

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:35

Enthusiasm I ask again, as Tony Blair wasn't leader and wasn't an elected MP in 2014, on what basis did he "officially represent the UK" at Ariel Sharon's funeral?

Justanotherlurker · 16/08/2018 22:38

You have provided no explanation, just a lazy ad hominem attack. Try harder.

No I haven't, you tried to play innocence of the term populist and equate that to him not winning. The fact you seemingly have no understanding of the political term and yet come out with the organised momentum response re Blair etc, is not as hominem, that's another term you need to look up as well

SillySallySingsSongs · 16/08/2018 22:38

Silly because as the investigation revealed - the cost of the trip was below the threshold for claiming. Obviously JC does not travel in luxury!

He stayed in a luxury hotel. But hey he never does wrong does he.

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:39

Haha Gerda I do find the idea of bat symbol flashing for Corbyn quite amusing! I might be wrong but I don't imagine MN is the hot target for Momentum Smile

SillySallySingsSongs · 16/08/2018 22:39

Oh and the official investigation hasn't reported yet.

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:39

Silly which luxury hotel?

SillySallySingsSongs · 16/08/2018 22:41

Can you tell me which steps the Conservative party have taken to address anti-semitism and islamaphobia (particularly in light of Boris Johnson's recent comments, Zac Goldsmiths hideous mayoral campaign and lately Lord Sheikh attending the same "anti-Semitic" event as Corbyn)? Whataboutery. This is a thread about Corbyn. If you want to talk about Tory issues start another thread.

holidaylady · 16/08/2018 22:42

He doesn't travel first class on UK trains. Coz I saw him in my standard class carriage a few weeks ago.

ZacharyQuacks · 16/08/2018 22:43

Silly there is no official investigation. One conservative MP has complained that the trip wasn't declared and Corbyn is in breach. Corbyn has stated that the trip was paid for by the conference organisers. Which seems inherently plausible unlike Boris Johnson's £20,000 trip

Corbyn has stated that the trip was paid for by the conference organisers.

Which still has to be declared.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/08/2018 22:44

He represented the UK as former
PM

Given the the funeral was two days after he died I expect many couldn’t attend

He was also working as a Middle East Peace Envoy at the time
