Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by a response on a thread running at the moment.
It got me thinking of the differences between MN and my RL friends and acquaintances, and things that are accepted wisdom on MN that no-one I know in real life cares about at all.
I will start off:

  1. Little girls who wear pink clothing, and gendered clothing in general;
  2. Scented sanitary towels;
  3. Fruit Shoots
  4. People cuddling/touching/talking to your child;
The amount of threads and angst over these topics is staggering, yet no-one I know would even think any of the above were worth discussing, never mind getting worked up about. Anymore?

Sophia regarding your last paragraph, why do you believe people think that?

Sunflowerr · 28/08/2018 17:32

@Sophia take it elsewhere eh. Like on to one of the Brexit threads. Keep this one lighthearted.

stillnotTheDoctor · 28/08/2018 17:44

If a step mum disagrees with dsc then she doesn't like them. In fact all dsc/exp arguments stem from dislike of dsc.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/08/2018 18:57

Hear hear.

Keep the ranty stream of consciousness to the appropriate threads, otherwise this becomes a TAAT AND just pisses everyone off.

It's happening again, incoming alert!! On a thread the OP started because her 8yo nephew annoys her, he's in and out her house all day (lives across the road) is sulky and stroppy and boastful, and winds her younger children up etc (you know the type)!IRL if you told a friend this they'd agree that he sounds awful, and then probably have a moan about his parents allowing this. On MN the thread is pretty much:

  • It's a privilege to be an important adult to a child, lucky you
  • I had kids in and out mine all day every day and I fed them and chatted to them and it was WONDERUL, try it OP
  • Wow, that's a child you're talking about, how awful
  • Get on his level, chat to him about 8yo things, be a cool auntie.

In reality she just needs to lock the front door and thank her stars he isn't hers! On MN land she should practically be adopting him

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/08/2018 04:50

On another thread, getting sloppy drunk once a year is "pattern behavior" and worrying binge drinking. Seriously, it sometimes seems like this site is run by prohibitionists.

GunpowderGelatine · 29/08/2018 04:53

YY TheHulks and if your partner stays out past midnight once a year (even though he told you 10.30pm) and comes back half cut, it's "does he always lie to you" "is he always this deceitful" - IRL you'd think "well of course he's not gonna come back at 10.30 if he's having a good time, and why should a grown adult have a curfew anyway".

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/08/2018 05:08

LOL Gunpowder yup. And god forbid he should say something stupid while drunk. That's verbal abuse. LTB.

PaulRuddislush · 29/08/2018 07:30

Agree with The Hulk about the puritanical attitude to alcohol on here. Drinking anything at all before your dc turn 18 is irresponsible in case you have to drive them to a&e.

There was a thread on here recently where the op was moaning about trying to save money and her dh was buying 3 bottles of wine a week. Cue loads of posts about how excessive and out of control his drinking was. Madness.

LalaLeona · 29/08/2018 07:45

I'm no fan of scented sanitary towels but think it's totally ridiculous that a pp said she can smell them through people's clothes! Come on! They must be jamming their nose against people's crotches to be able to do that. The smell is not that strong what rubbish

stillnotTheDoctor · 29/08/2018 07:51

The nits thread. How is that still going?!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 29/08/2018 09:49

Asking for cash as a wedding gift - many people I know have done this or requested a gift voucher and nobody batted an eyelid.

Exactly. How else were we supposed to pay for those obligatory driving lessons?!

Sweet Jesus! I missed this one.

Asking for cash as a wedding gift - many people I know have done this or requested a gift voucher and nobody batted an eyelid.

Absolutely not the done thing in my time, but my friends were all getting married 15-20 years ago. Emily Post would turn in her grave (American!).

Are you saying that three bottles of wine every week isn’t excessive? Confused

MarthaArthur · 29/08/2018 10:38

Oh yes. Cash as wedding gifts are rude and grabby espesh if the b and g ask for it. In reality nearly 100% of couples have been living together and ask for cash and the guests sigh with relief that its an easy gift. On mn is the rudest behaviour.

Also yes the attitude to alcohol is worrying on here. The single moms who say they cant touch a drop in case they need to drive to a and e even though ambulances and taxis exist.
On the other hand there was a horrendous thread once. I think i was the lone voice on it. The op was drinking one or 2 bottles of wine a week on her own every week. Drinking twice the reccd units of alcohol every week. She said she knew she was an alcoholic and had told her friends she needed help and they laughed at her and told her she wasnt. Everyone jumped on her to tell her she was silly and she was not an alcoholic and she actually drank very little and needed to learn what an alcoholic actually was. Twice the rec units every week and they told her that was normal. Especially as she said it was a crutch she needed to get through the week. Everyone told her they could pretty much drink a bottle a night and it was normal.

longwayoff · 29/08/2018 11:07

I dont drink but 2 bottles over 7 days isnt excessive surely?

InertPotato · 29/08/2018 11:15

Are you saying that three bottles of wine every week isn’t excessive?

Not by my count, no.

stillnotTheDoctor · 29/08/2018 11:16

Depends how many people are drinking it too.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/08/2018 11:21

The op was drinking one or 2 bottles of wine a week on her own every week.

Surely you mean one or 2 bottles a NIGHT not a week. Recommend limits are 1 and 1/2 bottles a week I think?

MarthaArthur · 29/08/2018 11:22

Rec 14 units a week at most. She was drinking over 19.5 unites every week. Yes thats exessive and worrying people cant see that.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 29/08/2018 11:38

Yes thats exessive and worrying people cant see that.

It's really not excessive. Although, it comes down to the individual. If she felt she was an alcoholic, than her friends should have respected her and supported her. But 2 bottles of wine a week is not, in itself, worrying amounts of alcohol. At least not by most peoples standards. This is what I mean by MN being full of prohibitionists.

longwayoff · 29/08/2018 11:40

France, Italy, Spain and many other countries. Do they have different unit weekly limits? Because I cant help feeling that most people would find that 2 bottles a week being described as excessive and dangerous is absurd.

InertPotato · 29/08/2018 11:44

Rec 14 units a week at most. She was drinking over 19.5 unites every week. Yes thats exessive and worrying people cant see that.

You should worry about people who don't exercise and gorge themselves at every opportunity. Not the people drinking two bottles of wine a week.

MarthaArthur · 29/08/2018 11:46

Im not a prohibitionist. I drink alcohol sensibly as the daughter of an alcoholic. And the weird reference to europe isnt helpful. Many europeans are alcoholics and not in a charming "oh im french so i drink a bottle every night".

TittyGolightly · 29/08/2018 11:47

Even thought the label says spring water and fruit juice hmm these MNers don't like to read labels on food do they

Bit more than spring water.
