Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by a response on a thread running at the moment.
It got me thinking of the differences between MN and my RL friends and acquaintances, and things that are accepted wisdom on MN that no-one I know in real life cares about at all.
I will start off:

  1. Little girls who wear pink clothing, and gendered clothing in general;
  2. Scented sanitary towels;
  3. Fruit Shoots
  4. People cuddling/touching/talking to your child;
The amount of threads and angst over these topics is staggering, yet no-one I know would even think any of the above were worth discussing, never mind getting worked up about. Anymore?

I know someone who's obsessed with fruit shoots and takes them off kids at lunch time, despite it not being school policy.

I know people who are very anti pink for girls in rl.

It takes all sorts.

Tallzarathegreat · 13/08/2018 19:57

Surely you all realise that;

Mumsnet probably has thousands of users, all from different backgrounds and cultures
Mumsnet is a largely anonymous forum where people feel free to rant and truly speak their minds
There are people in the world with different feelings and opinions to your immediate circle
You probably tend to mix with like minded people

MN - where people tell you what they think rather than what you want to hear...

There's a reason your friends don't talk about this stuff

Not sure why my friends would spare my feelings over their opinions of fruitshoots or scented sanitary towels?
Both of which, I might add, are widely available, which I am sure would not be the case if no-one was buying them Confused

Well, if you are the opinionated sort who thinks vaginal odour is a massive problem, or that sugar is good for kids; they might feel abashed about disagreeing with you.

Or maybe you only mix with people who hold the same opinions

Tallzarathegreat · 13/08/2018 20:07

I've noticed with sanitary towels that the unscented ones have almost disappeared from the shelves, so I don't have much choice.

I don't know anyone who has a mooncup, but how would I know?

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2018 20:09

I am so glad my DC were 11 and 9 when I discovered MN. I as unaware of all the angst i should have experienced when they were small.

I didn't even match their names. Shock I had no idea.

HemanOrSheRa · 13/08/2018 20:09

I find it all very comforting Grin. Even when my life has felt like an episode of EastEnders, I read threads on here and feel much better Grin.

My DP is a bus driver Sparkling. He's rarely seen a full blown argument. Although, if you ask him, it's because of his marvellous people skills Grin.

RedPanda2 · 13/08/2018 20:11

Fruit Shoots are gross and I will judge you as a parent when your children come in with cavities

BestBeforeYesterday · 13/08/2018 20:14

You obviously only mix with a very homogeneous group of people.
Have you ever asked anyone what they think of scented sanitary towels?

nellierose · 13/08/2018 20:14

In baby names there seems to often be a thing about having the 'full, proper' version of a name on the birth certificate even if you don't want to use it. So someone says they like the name Eliza or Rosie or Abby and it's 'oh have Elizabeth/Rosemary/Abigail on the BC and call them by a nickname.

Safeandwarm · 13/08/2018 20:17

I had no idea my preferred pads were scented till I read about it on mn and have them a sniff. I have heavy periods so I can smell the blood more than the perfume.

KinkyAfro · 13/08/2018 20:19

you can smell the sanitary towel stench on her

How lovely

melissasummerfield · 13/08/2018 20:19

Ive got to say fruit shoots make my kids really badly behaved! They have squash and juice at home but I don’t let them have fruit shoots or similar anymore when we are out because its not worth it ( i know this sounds mental btw Hmm )

clownfaces · 13/08/2018 20:20

Not answering the door. I'm surprised how many people refuse to answer, even in the daytime.

BlueGenes · 13/08/2018 20:23

Gender neutral clothing for children girls wearing boys clothes.

PaulRuddislush · 13/08/2018 20:25

If someone posts along the lines of "really hacked off, I ordered a pepperoni pizza and they've delivered mushrooms" someone will always say "why don't you make your own pizza op? Much cheaper and healthier " irl no one would say that.

eightfacesofthemoon · 13/08/2018 20:26

Never even heard of scented sanitary products outside of mumsnet
But then I just go in but super super super super super max x1000000 tampons and leave. I don’t even look at anything else

eightfacesofthemoon · 13/08/2018 20:26

Buy!!

CoughLaughFart · 13/08/2018 20:27

Not calling at friend’s/famil6’s houses without an appointment.

What I don’t understand about this one is that no one seems to get that this is a personal choice. On Mumsnet ‘just popping in’ is either perfectly fine and anyone who doesn’t like it is some weirdly repressed freak, or it’s a major social faux pas akin to taking a dump on the coffee table.

In real life, some people are happy to have unexpected visitors. Others like to be more organised and don’t want their routine disrupted. Neither is wrong. Anyone with any sense doesn’t just drop in on the latter.

PaulRuddislush · 13/08/2018 20:30

It's mostly full of people determined to push their own agenda/opinion regardless of the question, e.g.

OP: I'm looking for ideas for a short break, anywhere but Prague

Responses will include:

How about Prague?
What's your problem with Prague?
You really should reconsider, Prague is lovely

//shoots self//

clownfaces · 13/08/2018 20:33

I don't really like people calling at all unannounced. That must be where I'm going wrong. I should stop answering my door.

Donthugmeimscared · 13/08/2018 20:33

I hate scented sanitary towels as the give me thrush but I never discuss it with anyone I know.

I'm always shocked that every one seems to have spare rooms and almost everyone owns their house.
