Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by a response on a thread running at the moment.
It got me thinking of the differences between MN and my RL friends and acquaintances, and things that are accepted wisdom on MN that no-one I know in real life cares about at all.
I will start off:

  1. Little girls who wear pink clothing, and gendered clothing in general;
  2. Scented sanitary towels;
  3. Fruit Shoots
  4. People cuddling/touching/talking to your child;
The amount of threads and angst over these topics is staggering, yet no-one I know would even think any of the above were worth discussing, never mind getting worked up about. Anymore?

The attitude that if you can't/don't drive (unless for specific medical conditions) then you might as well just give up on life right now,not to mention the fact that you are a lazy, lift scrounging nuisance

I’ve learned from MN that if you can’t drive as an adult, you must not be able to function however, if you can and do drive instead of taking the bus, you are the spawn of satan, responsible for the demise of the planet.

I highly recommend this thread about a woman who asked her MIL to hand out some wedding invites and has had an acceptance from a random who wasn't invited. Opening comments include, it's rude not to include a plus one and why were you handing out invites rather than mailing them Grin

@BuntyII They are vile! Have you ever tasted one?! They are like drinking liquid jam! Extortionate amount of sugar & sweeteners! Something like 1% actual fruit content

Powerless · 28/08/2018 01:36

@Mynamesblurryface That isn't a fruit shoot, that is a Fruit Shoot Juiced. Original Fruit Shoots are nothing but sugar & sweetener. Taste it yourself....

Powerless · 28/08/2018 01:56

@HollyGibney I don't give my DC Fruit Shoots either! She only has water and milk.

I am constantly berated and hear comments like "Poor kid"

Thing is, she won't drink juice! Or flavoured milk! Noting with any flavour (Possible ASD).

PaulRuddislush · 28/08/2018 08:12

THreads on here about being excluded from anything always elicit a lot of projection, e.g.

"They are all bitches/cunts op"

"This is why I only work/socialise with men , no bitchy cliques that way"

"They're probably jealous op. Are you much better looking than them?"

Incredibly childish, blinkered and nasty about women and female friendship group dynamics.

MaisyPops · 28/08/2018 08:19

Only on MN do people turn up on otherwise interesting (but sometimes heated) threads, post lots of goady crap only to insult posters and flounce when posters challenge then.

SharpLily · 28/08/2018 08:30

The hatred of the word 'chav' on here. In real life I'm pretty sure we all know some gawjus huns who call their children Lexi-May and Kayden and fulfil all the chav cliches, yet on Mumsnet we're supposed to pretend they don't exist and that anyone who uses the term 'chav' is a despicable snob. I know they exist, I'm related to a fair few and I do feel it's appropriate to look down on some of their poorer life choices. I know that doesn't sound good put in those terms but it's still the way it is.

the Brexit threads where extreme lefties are raging about it and certain (or hopeful?) that we’ll have civil war and a complete apocalypse if we exit the EU. Nutters. I know remain and leave friends irl and they’re all just vaguely curious about what’s happening without predicting end-of-days scenarios over breakfast.

Yes.

Is that what the stockpiling threads are about?
I thought they'd been following Extreme Couponing. Blush

Toal rubbish. I've read a lot of those threads and no one has said with absolute certainty there'll be a disaster scenario but they have genuine concerns which they're doing all they can to mitigate. The main issue on those threads are from people (absolute idiots) with zero experience or knowledge on how medication and food is sourced (time frames etc.) no experience of NHS staffing etc preaching to people whose lives/sanity depends on daily medication that they shouldn't be worried. The stupidity of some of those comments is astounding. Why would any of us care what your real life friends think?

Your real life friends are obviously going to be a much more narrow slither of society than those you meet online. You live in a bubble and online you're going to experience a wider range of opinions.

papayasareyum · 28/08/2018 09:21

Crisps, there are literally dozens of threads where you can go to discuss apocalyptic scenarios with likeminded preppers and others......this thread is for the discussion of what people mostly see on Mumsnet, but not in the real world. But your post kind of illustrated my point. Grin

Absolutely! Even some of the previously more sensible threads seem to be working themselves up into some self flagellatimg fervour.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 28/08/2018 11:48

Flagellating.

MarthaArthur · 28/08/2018 12:01

Yes to the brexit threada being insane! I stupidly went on once. Was a mistake. I tried to calm people down and say it wouldnt be the apocalypse that we are a strong enough nation that we will eventually work out our deals etc. One particular poster really had it in for me and repeatedly mocked me and was nasty about me voting for brexit. When i said i didnt i actually voted remain she called me liar and would not let it go. Because you couldnt possibly have voted remain and still look on the brightside.

CoughLaughFart · 28/08/2018 12:06

Oh God, this drives me nuts (no pun intended). If two friends going to the same place took separate cars there would be a chorus of ‘Why on earth would you take separate cars? Don’t you care about the environment?!’ If two friends travelled in one car and one of those friends couldn’t drive, s/he would be derided as an entitled ‘CF’ who was ‘demanding to be ferried about’. (Why is it always ‘ferried’ about? Why are they never just getting a lift?)

MarthaArthur · 28/08/2018 12:06

Theres literally a brexit thread today implying we will all be eating our pets by next march because armegeddon is coming. These people dont seem to understand the eu is a new concept not an ancient order.

Link please? Sounds fun!

EwItsAHooman · 28/08/2018 13:24

My pet is a rather skinny goldfish.

Does the thread say what the official panic policy is on eating neighbours and/or in-laws?

NoelEdmondsbeard · 28/08/2018 13:53

When I first joined MN it was to ask for advice regarding a medical issue and on those boards there was a lot support, compassion and understanding.

I eventually graduated to the AIBU threads, whole different world.

I made the mistake of once asking a question - under a previous name -about a child possibly hitting my DD and what you should do as a new parent. Never again. I
got absolutely slaughtered: Who the hell do you think you are, to think your baby is SO special ?!?!? /PFB!!!!! /Get a fucking GRIP!!!

What was weird was when I spoke to another new mum in rl she finished my sentence and said she absolutely understood and gave advice, as did my bff. No screaming about precious fooking babies!

I think there is a certain machismo about threads on mn. The joy of being snarky, contrary, offensive or being a smart ass is too much for some to resist. This is a shame because I think some people desperately want advise and to be met with insults helps no one.

Ba ha ha, that made me LOL, and it's so true as well. They act like the UK is going to fall off the planet next March, and end up floating around in space, with us detached from humanity. Unfortunately, I know several people like this irl who were rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of Brexit failing (with the 'no deal' issue going on!) and the thought there may be another rererendum.

When it was suggested we will probably leave without a deal with the EU, (and they can just bore off coz we don't NEED them,) these people say they have cried themselves to sleep every night since, and keep having nightmares about our future.

We were fine before we joined the EU, and we will be fine when we leave. Get a fucking grip. We have been through a lot worse.

What's more, so what if we DO have a tough time after we leave? And the EU threaten to make life hard for us??? SO many people have been at the bottom of the food chain, with very little, for so long now, that they have NOTHING to lose. So they are just like 'BRING IT ON BITCHES!' We are British, we are tough bastards. (Well some of us LOL!)

I am literally planning a massive party for next year too; to celebrate leaving the EU, and to celebrate the end of the decade.

Also, you forgot to mention that these people also accuse people who support Brexit of being thick, uneducated, racist, bigoted, and generally fucking stupid! (And they are often the same ones who shriek 'RACIST' at anyone who doesn't join them in the 'Guardians of the ethnic minorities' club. Grin
