Dog sitting, is she a CF?

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 18:46

My cousin asked me to dog sit months ago. I said I guess I would but I'm fairly busy. She said her mum would help out walking the dog so I agreed.
I live with my mum while I save for a deposit on a house so I thought it'd be a chance to have a break from each other even though we get on well. I'll still pay her rent as it is cheap and she still has all the bills to pay.

I've just turned up at my cousin's and she's left me a loaf of bread, a pint of milk and a bloody box of chocolates to eat. Nothing else no cheese, ham, salad stuff, potatoes nothing. The fridge is empty as is the freezer. I'm bloody annoyed I'm going to have to go out and buy a weeks worth of food so while saving my cousin over a £100 it's going to cost me at least £50!

Àibu to expect if you're dog sitting for free they should at least leave you food? She's even told me where the vac is so I'll clean for her!

I wouldn't leave much tbh, how would she know what you would eat? I'm not sure she is being a CF really.

Fireworks91 · 13/08/2018 18:48

And surely it won't cost you £50? What would you normally eat?

bluerunningshoes · 13/08/2018 18:48

why didn't you discuss this before agreeing?

Fireworks91 · 13/08/2018 18:48

And presumably the vac is to clear up after yourself?!

PatchworkElmer · 13/08/2018 18:49

I think, I’m your cousin’s position, I would leave you about £60 in cash to buy food (or order takeaways). I wouldn’t stock up in case you didn’t like what I’d bought.

user1486076969 · 13/08/2018 18:50

Presumably you normally buy food to eat at home anyway......just because you are in a new location doesn't mean it will cost you any more? I wouldn't expect to feed my 'house/dog sitter'.

ClandestineAdulation · 13/08/2018 18:50

I wouldn’t expect to be left food if I was dog sitting or house sitting etc. How would they know what you’d want to eat?

HannahHut · 13/08/2018 18:50

What are you spending £50 on for a week?! She left you the basics, I wouldn't buy new fresh food if I was going away for a week either.

Has she got any chicken breast in her freezer?

ZoeWashburne · 13/08/2018 18:50

You are getting your own space for the week after living with your mum. Of course you should pay for your own food. Why would it cost you £50 for one person? You could easily eat for 1 person for less than that.

The only thing I would have expected her to leave was dog food.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/08/2018 18:50

At least £50 for a weeks worth of food...for one person?Shock

ApolloandDaphne · 13/08/2018 18:52

Milk, bread and a box of chocs is fine. How would she know what you like to eat?

Leeds2 · 13/08/2018 18:52

I think I would've left some fruit, ham and cheese, and then expected you to cater for yourself!

imlateagain · 13/08/2018 18:52

I wouldn't leave food, apart from the basics, but I would pay cash for dog sitting.

MurielTheSheepDog · 13/08/2018 18:53

I wouldn't have thought to stock the cupboards tbh. If you're at work or popping home to see you mother maybe your cousin didn't think you'd need loads.
Or maybe she is going to square up when she's back? Who knows.
I'm not getting total CFery tho 🤷‍♀️

Booboostwo · 13/08/2018 18:58

I’ve used professional pet sitters quite a few times and the arrangement is a fee plus a food allowance, or a fully stocked kitchen, so YANBU. How did your cousin even manage to eat everything in the kitchen anyway? She must have really tried to finish everything right before she left.

SevernWye · 13/08/2018 18:59

YABU. I would leave a bottle of wine and chocolates to say thanks. You could help yourself to what was in the fridge/cupboards but I wouldn’t expect to buy meals for you.

You are helping her but as you said it’s a chance to chill out on your own. How do you normally feed yourself? Are you saying your meals are in with the rent you pay your mum so you’re out of pocket?

LoughingLikeAShark · 13/08/2018 19:02

Huh? But wouldn't you normally buy food? It's a bit much to expect her to feed you for a week! Confused

ApolloandDaphne · 13/08/2018 19:03

Is she going to pay you? Did you agree anything when you said you would dog sit?

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:03

Interesting that the majority think she's right. I guess I just think differently. when I go away and have someone in to look after the cats I ask the person what they like and make sure the fridge is stocked.

Ok so maybe not £50 but I'll still be out of pocket!

PotteringAlong · 13/08/2018 19:04

I wouldn’t have left you food. You’re being a bit unreasonable here.

HelpmeobiMN · 13/08/2018 19:05

Did you agree beforehand that she would leave food? I wouldn’t leave food for my dog sitter unless pre agreed. But I assume she isn’t paying you in which case she should have left you money for food IMO since you’re doing her a favour. I don’t think you will need £50 of food for a week though.

ImAGoofyGoober · 13/08/2018 19:06

She was a bit mean in what she’d left, after all you are saving her quite a bit of money in kennel fees. I’d have left a bit more basic stuff and some cash I think.

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:06

@apolloanddaphne she's skint so I'm doing it as a favour which im fine with. When I've done it in the past there's always been some food in, even just some cheese and ham.

hazeydays14 · 13/08/2018 19:06

YABU to expect a fully stocked kitchen, when I dog sit for my dad he usually buys milk and bread for me but he does leave me £20 to get a take away to be fair.

She probably left the vac out of the dog sheds because it doesn’t take long for the hair to build up.. gross if you’re walking bare foot.

She could have been more generous with her thanks but don’t think she’s in CF territory.

LeroyJenkins · 13/08/2018 19:06

but you would be paying to eat anyway?

but... she should have left you more than she did, and i wouldnt bother with the hoovering either
