Dog sitting, is she a CF?

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 18:46

My cousin asked me to dog sit months ago. I said I guess I would but I'm fairly busy. She said her mum would help out walking the dog so I agreed.
I live with my mum while I save for a deposit on a house so I thought it'd be a chance to have a break from each other even though we get on well. I'll still pay her rent as it is cheap and she still has all the bills to pay.

I've just turned up at my cousin's and she's left me a loaf of bread, a pint of milk and a bloody box of chocolates to eat. Nothing else no cheese, ham, salad stuff, potatoes nothing. The fridge is empty as is the freezer. I'm bloody annoyed I'm going to have to go out and buy a weeks worth of food so while saving my cousin over a £100 it's going to cost me at least £50!

Àibu to expect if you're dog sitting for free they should at least leave you food? She's even told me where the vac is so I'll clean for her!

Surely she should do one or the other - either pay you or feed you. It is CF to do neither.

Condragulations · 13/08/2018 19:07

Why would you be out of pocket though? Presumably you would eat food this week if you were still at your mums? How strange...

ApolloandDaphne · 13/08/2018 19:08

So i am confused now. You are doing it as a favour because she is skint ... but you want her to have bought you food?

NaomiNagata · 13/08/2018 19:11

@Fucketbucket13

I don't understand... How are you out of pocket? Do you not normally eat food?

Surely you'd buy food to eat at home, so this week you're just buying the same food but eating it at a different house. You're not out of pocket - you are continuing your normal routine of eating regularly. Or did you expect to eat for free for the week?

daffodillament · 13/08/2018 19:13

YAB massively U ! Good god ! You're just getting paid to look after the dog. I think you're the CF !

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:13

So if you all asked someone to dog sit for free you'd leave an empty fridge and freezer and expect the dog sitter who is saving you at least £120 to feed themselves?
I guess we all have different standards!

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:14

I'm not getting paid!!

Hang on a minute. OP is providing, gratis, a service which would otherwise have cost her cousin in the neighbourhood of a hundred nicker. I wouldn’t have done a full shop of perishables either, but I’d’ve left more than a loaf of bread, a pint of milk and some chocolates (hardly the basics, by the way: even Jack Monroe couldn’t make a meal out of that. Maybe chocolate bread and butter pudding?). It’s not DEFCON 1 in the CF stakes, but it’s a bit tight.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/08/2018 19:18

Yes, she should have left you something.

Are you saying the rent you pay at home also pays for your food? As in this case it is costing you money. Surely your mum in that case would be ok to charge you less for the week.

huggybear · 13/08/2018 19:18

I don't think you're being a CF at all! You're doing her a favour, she should have put the basics in the cupboard and left some money for you.

NaomiNagata · 13/08/2018 19:19

@Fucketbucket13

My cupboards, fridge and freezer are never that sparse. I'm assuming if someone keeps so little food in the house then it's because they can't afford to have extra food kept in. This seems to be true here since you've said she is skint.

You'd be paying for food if you weren't there. Now you're just paying for it while you are there. Exact same expenses you'd normally have. So I will ask again, did you expect to eat for free for the week?

KittyHawke80 · 13/08/2018 19:20

Actually, when I go into hospital, I provide most of my own food, because I don’t think it’s the responsibility of the NHS to feed me: after all, I’d have to feed myself when at home. Presumably most of you feel the same.

BigDamnHero · 13/08/2018 19:20

OP, you haven't answered everyone asking how you're out of pocket? Surely, you'd normally pay money for food anyway so how is this costing you more than usual?

Howhot · 13/08/2018 19:20

Why would you be out of pocket? Confused or does your mum buy your food for you!?

Fireworks91 · 13/08/2018 19:20

It's a bit tight, but not CF behaviour. If you were buying food at home anyway what's the difference? Definitely not a question of 'standards'.

huggybear · 13/08/2018 19:22

You are all mad, she's doing her a massive favour!

KittyHawke80 · 13/08/2018 19:23

There’s an appreciable difference between expecting to eat for nothing, the entire week, and expecting something slightly more than a solitary loaf of bread and a pink of milk, ffs. Should the cousin have done an Ocado shop? No. Should she have left some eggs, a bit of fruit, some cheese, maybe some chicken fillets or mince, the odd ready meal? A tenner’s worth, maybe? Yes.

SmallBlondeMama · 13/08/2018 19:24

I would definitely leave food for my pet but it would never even cross my mind to leave food for my pet sitter!!!

thirtyplusone · 13/08/2018 19:24

why will you be out of pocket? Do you not pay for your own food? Consider it a good life lesson on how to look after yourself... Hmm

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:25

Yes my mum buys the food it's In with my rent. She's been very generous while I get a deposit together for a house.
My cousin is always skint event when she was well off she was skint.

I really don't mind the dog sitting I guess I just expected a few basic bits to make a meal. When I get home from work I had to go out to shop as there was only bread and biscuits to eat.

Ohyesiam · 13/08/2018 19:26

I’ve done lots of house and pet sitting, and I’ve never been fed. I’m quite glad as I like to choose my food.

KittyHawke80 · 13/08/2018 19:26

But presumably you pay your pet sitter, Small?

Fucketbucket13 · 13/08/2018 19:26

@thirtyplusone you know absolutely nothing about me so don't tell me about life lessons, I've had bloody plenty! I'm more than capable of looking after myself.

OP posts:
hmcAsWas · 13/08/2018 19:26

Hmmm - difficult. I pay £35 per day for a house sitter who ensures the house is occupied and that my two dogs are walked morning and evening, so your cousin is saving a fair bit (this is a bit over the odds but I trust her implicitly with my dogs so I pay it - however you would struggle to get a conscientious house /dog sitter in your own home, for less that £25 per day). In view of the £££ savings she is making on not paying for a dog sitter or paying kennel fees, I do think she could have left you some nice food in the fridge, a bottle of wine etc and a bunch of flowers as a thank you. You probably should have agreed terms with her right at the outset

Polly2345 · 13/08/2018 19:27

We spend £60 a week on two adults and a child. I don't think you need to spend £50 on one person.
