SIL has not vaccinated my nieces

My baby has been booked in for her vaccinations soon. I asked my sister in law, who has primary school aged kids, about the experience and I was flabbergasted when she said she didn't get their jabs. I can't quite believe it!

When I asked why, she said the risks outweighed the pros but she struggled to articulate what the risks were beyond 'potential death'. I said that that was also the downside of not getting the jabs too! She said she was persuaded when her friend said that the jabs couldn't be undone if her kids had a reaction.

AIBU to be shocked and quite disappointed about this? I'm not looking forward to it by any means, but the eradication of many awful diseases and protection against those still prevalent is surely a non negotiable?

When her kids don't get these diseases, she'll be vindicated but that will likely be because the majority have had their jabs rather than proving jabs were unnecessary.

I imagine I'll get over this - my child will be protected - but I'm just Shock at hearing this news.

The most depressing thing about these threads is the apparent belief that insulting people will get them to change their mind, which one would think is the goal here.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/08/2018 22:03

When will people face facts and listen to solid scientific evidence?
Disease kills and maims.
We have studied diseases, causes, cures.
Vaccines have saved thousands of lives.
There are still many diseases that we are still fighting but WHY would anyone choose NOT to vaccinate against the diseases that we can kill?
All you anti vax people out there are deluded and bloody stupid.you are risking the life of your own kids and everyone else’s kids too.
Vaccinate our kids!!

FunkyHeroCat · 12/08/2018 22:04

EssexMummy123456 I am not ill informed about vaccines, I have learned about them and epidemiology at post graduate level and have worked in infectious diseases for most of my life.

If you know that vaccines are not 100% effective, you will also know why for full protection as many people as possible have to be vaccinated.

Please feel free to look up the rest of the maths involved in epidemiology and not cherry pick the bits you feel support your cause.

And ex-Dr Wakefield is just making money out of gullible people. Literally thousands of careful placebo controlled double blind studies have proved him wrong but a few people still believe him despite that, and he's still spouting the same old tripe even without credible evidence.

KurriKurri · 12/08/2018 22:05

KurriKurri - the chance of dying from whooping cough in the UK is tiny

That's kind of the point I was addressing in my post. Tiny is no comfort if your child is one of the 'tiny' number who die. (I also have permanent lung damage from whooping cough, and my brother nearly died from it - we both caught it from an unvaccinated child - I was too young to have been fully vaccinated, my brother was too unwell)

No quite sure why you are using mumps as an example of your point about whooping cough.

But since we are on the subject, I've also had a friend die from mumps as an adult, - but that was in the days before the mumps vaccine. Maybe I am unlucky to have lost people to these kind of diseases, but I imagine vaccines were developed against them because they can kill people or leave them with lifelong damage.

SerenDippitty · 12/08/2018 22:08

Most people who don't vaccinate are university educated, many are GPs. People who don't vaccinate usually research it quite thoroughly, probably more than those who do vaccinate.

My friend is a consultant paediatrician and specialist in infectious disease. She vaccinated and has a pretty low opinion of those who don’t.

YouCantStopTheSignal · 12/08/2018 22:13

Cite your sources(s) please.

Bet you can't because your statement is bullshit

Nagaram · 12/08/2018 22:17

Perhaps show your brother this?

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 12/08/2018 22:19

I think measles isn't given til 1 and then the booster at 3. For that reason alone, given the measles outbreaks and how severe it can be in little babies, I'd be avoiding them until your baby has its injections at 13 months. If they want to opt out of herd immunity, they opt out from being part of the herd in my opinion. Yes the chances of getting measles from them is tiny...but still not worth it to me

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/08/2018 22:20

Nagaram nice👍

MairyHole · 12/08/2018 22:23

"i think people are very ill-informed about vaccines."

No-one will argue with you there, given the ill informed rubbish you are coming out with! Still a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Plimmy · 12/08/2018 22:23

Every ‘fact’ put forward by vaccine deniers on this thread and every similar thread is either an outright falsehood or at the least highly misleading.

I do think MN should ban comments by anti-vaxxers. They wouldn’t tolerate posts by people saying that children should be exposed to the risks of fire, physical abuse or car accidents, so why indulge people who argue that we should encourage the risk of pain, suffering, disability and death from disease?

A while ago there was a thread that was deleted because someone pointed out that comment by a poster about what can be eaten in pregnancy was wrong - and the poster had advised against food that the NHS advice said was fine. Yet these wretched anti-vax comments go on and on.

IMO it’s high time the law was changed to require vaccination for nursery, school, all voluntary groups and all state benefits. And that any parent who could but didn’t immunise their child and that the child can be shown to have spread infectious disease, can be sued by the parents of affected children. Once anti-vaxxers are faced with the consequences of their selfishness and face losing

Plimmy · 12/08/2018 22:24

...their homes in ruinous lawsuits, they’ll be down the clinic ASAP.

WineIsMyMainVice · 12/08/2018 22:28

I’m with nicknacky here. Why have you placed no blame at your brothers door?
Saying that I totally disagree with their decision.

Confusedbeetle · 12/08/2018 22:30

Aintnothingbuta heartache
Some people choose not to vaccinate their children. Some choose to vote Brexit.
Wherever you look there are thick uneducated people who do stupid things. Sadly that’s life

REALLY! How dare you compare the two? You have just demonstrated that there are some extremely thick and uneducated people who presumably voted Remain!! The very thought! Oh those stupid chavvy brexiteers, I really do despair sometimes of the arrogance and ignorance of why people voted. You really need to get out more, or rather find out why people voted instead of reading your reflective journalism. Get off your high horse

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/08/2018 22:45

confusedbeetle

Well, CONFUSEDbeetle should I list the economic issues alongside the official scientific evidence in support of vaccines? Why do you think that the pound immediately fell in value after Brexit? Also I’m completely stuck on why prices are rising across the country too.

Incidentally, I don’t need to get to more, I get out loads.you don’t know ma life!

Pittcuecothecookbook · 12/08/2018 22:46

WineIsMyMainVice 🙄 did you not read the posts where I explain I blame them both but the conversation was will SIL who said she made the decision? Or did you read it, but choose to ignore it?

OP posts:
Nidy · 12/08/2018 22:47

@anonnymouse 100%, I couldn't agree more, well said.

victoriaspongecake · 12/08/2018 22:51

Last time I checked we lived in a democratic society where people can choose whether or not to vaccinate their children. I chose to vaccinate mine but would support the rights of any parent who chooses not to.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/08/2018 22:53

Facts are, children should be vaccinated and leaving the EU is crazy

mumsastudent · 12/08/2018 22:53

essexmummy www.hps.scot.nhs.uk/immvax/mumpsdata.aspx stop spreading false information or are you saying this journal article is untrue? nb everybody this reputable journal article states that the cause of the spread was that the students were either not immunised at all or only partially immunised so what you have stated is a complete fallacy

PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2018 22:59

I chose to vaccinate mine but would support the rights of any parent who chooses not to.

Of course it is their right to do it. It doesn’t mean that it’s any less of a stupid decision.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 12/08/2018 23:11

Going to bed now. Just wanted to say that anyone who doesn’t vaccinate their kids is a bloody idiot.
Also, big thanks to all you brexiters, you’ve really fucked up haven’t you.
It’s all about stupid people

SmallYappyTypeDog · 13/08/2018 03:28

I chose to vaccinate mine but would support the rights of any parent who chooses not to

Quite right. But I will also exercise my right to protect my child by not socialising with theirs. Other parents right to be a total idiot does not trump my rights to protect my baby from preventable diseases, this is something else I find anti vaxxers struggle with Hmm.

SilverBirchTree · 13/08/2018 03:39

I wouldn't be letting them anywhere near my newborn...

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 13/08/2018 04:26

My children are fully vaccinated, but the thought of it being legally enforceable to carry out non-emergency medical intervention on people's children makes my blood run cold. FWIW, there is a child within my extended family who suffered vaccine damage. It is very real. But so are diseases. I made my choice based on a balance of probabilities. People scoffing at vaccine damage and saying it isn't real only reveal their own ignorance.

Furthermore, my siblings and I were fully vaccinated and 2 of the 3 of us managed to get measles anyway. This conversation isn't going to go away - there's a lot still to be learned about disease mutation and immunity. I suspect we've scratched the surface. I completely understand why some people feel they don't want to be part of the experiment, even if I made a different choice myself.
