SIL has not vaccinated my nieces

Pittcuecothecookbook · 12/08/2018 19:49

My baby has been booked in for her vaccinations soon. I asked my sister in law, who has primary school aged kids, about the experience and I was flabbergasted when she said she didn't get their jabs. I can't quite believe it!

When I asked why, she said the risks outweighed the pros but she struggled to articulate what the risks were beyond 'potential death'. I said that that was also the downside of not getting the jabs too! She said she was persuaded when her friend said that the jabs couldn't be undone if her kids had a reaction.

AIBU to be shocked and quite disappointed about this? I'm not looking forward to it by any means, but the eradication of many awful diseases and protection against those still prevalent is surely a non negotiable?

When her kids don't get these diseases, she'll be vindicated but that will likely be because the majority have had their jabs rather than proving jabs were unnecessary.

I imagine I'll get over this - my child will be protected - but I'm just Shock at hearing this news.

You cannot seriously minimize or defend the actions of someone who falsified research and was struck off as a result. The research he produced was fraudulent.

Either way, any discussion of Wakefield himself is irrelevant to the point of the post to which I referred. If you care to read it I'm sure you can scroll back through.

Dumb and stupid opinions just like brexit remainers and so many other subjects alike if people have a different opinion you don’t want it posted lol so love the idiocy.

bastardkitty · 14/08/2018 16:19

Oh dear. Idiocy abounds.

MairyHole · 14/08/2018 16:47

What has Brexit got to do with anything..? Was that comment to me?

Suewiang · 14/08/2018 17:03

No to plimmy and her ban all anti vax posts

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 14/08/2018 17:17

To be fair banning anti vaxx posts would at least mean one less place where dangerous misinformation can be found.

keepingfingerscrossed · 14/08/2018 17:20

@sue if you want your message to be heard you need to stop insulting everyone who disagrees with you. And to the SIL (and others) who are happy they have not vaccinated. I'm willing to bet that if there was a measles outbreak in their immediate area/their child's nursery then they would be off for the vaccination sharpish - just like the children in my sons nursery who until that point were happy with their decision not to vaccinate.

Plimmy · 14/08/2018 17:24

What’s wrong with banning anti-vax posts? As I said upthread, MN wouldn’t tolerate posts that encourage endangering children in any other way.

Seems a matter of common sense to me.

Graphista · 14/08/2018 17:40

Op that sounds suspiciously like your brother may not KNOW his own kids are unvaccinated. In your position I'd want to be checking with him on that ASAP.

Sil "doesn't trust" GP? Bet she'd bloody trust them if/when her kids DO get mmr, whooping cough, meningitis... And they needed urgent treatment!

Quibbled - Wakefield should NEVER have been published. It wasn't just him that was irresponsible imo, there was no basis for his opinion.

"It's odd that she reckons she doesn't need to as everyone else does but then says herd immunity is not proven! I mean pick one or the other" exactly she's contradicting herself! Ridiculous! Would she travel to a place where these diseases are prevalent without vaccinating her kids? You know really out of the way places like...France, Italy, Spain? 🙄

I suspect the reason there's increase in outbreaks in these developed countries where vaccination is accessible is same as here and parts of USA - selfish anti-vaxxers.

But then I also suspect they blame others if their kids get sick.

NO! Vaccinate your kids and stop burying your heads in the sand!

MissConductUS · 14/08/2018 19:59

@Graphista the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) came to the same conclusion.

Incidence of Measles in the United States, 2001-2015

The declining incidence with age, the high proportion of unvaccinated cases, and the decline in the proportion of vaccinated cases despite rate increases suggest that failure to vaccinate, rather than failure of vaccine performance, may be the main driver of measles transmission, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high vaccine coverage.

Graphista · 14/08/2018 20:04

Doesn't surprise me. Must be infuriating for the likes of cdc and other govt agencies who work hard to inform and educate people, some who then ignore them and listen to some quack with no knowledge!

Graphista · 14/08/2018 20:06

You know what - never mind schools, I bet anti-vaxxers would soon vaccinate if Disney and airlines, hotels refused to accept customers who'd not vaccinated with no medical reason not to.

ImAIdoot · 14/08/2018 20:10

They have to give consent according to their judgment and assessment of the available evidence. You do the same and vaccinate your child as you see fit.

Only attempt to enforce your decision on their family if you would be 100% happy to have their decision forced on yours.

MairyHole · 14/08/2018 20:14

ImAIdoot - the overwhelming medical consensus and evidence is that it is significantly less harmful to vaccinate.

They are forcing the consequences of their choices onto those who medically cannot be protected and who have no choice so your point is completely the wrong way round.

Suewiang · 14/08/2018 20:15

couldn’t agree more aldoot

Graphista · 14/08/2018 20:21

They ARE forcing their POOR HARMFUL decision on the rest of the population - that's the problem!

Schools already enforce infection control practices (eg 48 hr d&v rule) I don't see this as particularly different. Their parents could still CHOOSE to home educate, enrol their child in a private school willing to take unvaccinated children, or hire tutors willing to teach them.

Plimmy · 14/08/2018 20:21

ImAldoot

That makes no sense. No-one’s suggesting forced vaccinations. Just that - IMO - if you choose not to vaccinate you should put up with restrictions on what your children can do, with denial of state benefits and with social disapproval. I also think anti-vaxxers should be stopped from telling harmful lies on the internet.

None of that is wrong or invites reciprocal restrictions.

ImAIdoot · 14/08/2018 20:22

*ImAIdoot - the overwhelming medical consensus and evidence is that it is significantly less harmful to vaccinate.

I'm well aware of what the medical consensus is, and I have my children vaccinated.

With that said people are a bit too quick to get their Brian Cox impressions on, on this issue. You're not the boss of other people, there are some risks associated with both vaccinating and not vaccinating children that vary according to the circumstances and the stats in your community, and people have to weigh those risks up in good faith before they subject their children to medical procedures. Vaccinate your children or do not.

Plimmy · 14/08/2018 20:25

That makes even less sense.

MairyHole · 14/08/2018 20:28

ImAIdoot - and fuck the immune compromised children if you do not. Have I got that right?

I'm not saying I'm the boss of people, I'm saying other people are believing misinformation and putting other people's children at risk and I'm criticising them for that, because their decision is awful. I'm not saying I'm going to go door to door vaccinating people's children...

ImAIdoot · 14/08/2018 20:28

Fucking lunacy. Thank goodness evil control freakery like this is not a reality.

Graphista · 14/08/2018 20:29

Statistically the risks of not vaccinating are higher than vaccinating. If that weren't true govts and aid agencies wouldn't work so hard and spend so much money TRYING to get as many people as possible vaccinated.

ImAIdoot · 14/08/2018 20:30

Yes, we live in a world where you can't force medical procedures on or insert things into the bodies of living human beings, adult or child, for the benefit of third parties.

That's the way it should be, really, and people should pretty much just deal with it.

Plimmy · 14/08/2018 20:31

Yeah, let’s see the return of mass disability and death, even though it’s completely avoidable. And let’s also allow a load of cranks to dictate our public health policy by lying on the internet.

Good work!

Janni01 · 14/08/2018 20:32

Well stuff like that is happening though, and I agree. In France you act enroll into schools until vaccinated unless you have a medical exemption and I agree it should happen in the UK.

You shouldn't be able to access nurseries and schools etc unless properly vaccinated unless a doctor says you can't have the vaccines.
