Sobbing over the death of a TV character

We are binge watching Boardwalk Empire. My favourite character died last night and I was in bits. It was beautifully done and a shocking end to the season.
I haven't felt this way since Thelma and Louise went over the canyon. Sad

I cry loads!
Barbara in CTM, I didn't even like the character that much. But she had such a horrible death, and she's so lovely. I don't like that utter plank of a Vicar, either, but I cried at his grief at her funeral- and poor Phyllis :(.

Mark Greene in ER, no matter how often I watch it and know it's coming, I'm a sobbing wreck! And when Lucy died, it was just so cruel. And I cried after Romano died, when only Lizzie mourned him. It just touched me.

MASH- I have NEVER EVER forgiven them for killing my darling Henry. I'd rather they'd killed Trapper! I know they didn't know he was leaving at the time, but I just love Henry. I can't watch that episode.

Gene & Alex saying good bye in Ashes to Ashes. He gives up the woman he loves and I just want him to go, too.

Tessio in the Godfather. He deserved it but it still really upsets me when they take him away and he tells Michael he understands.

When Juliet Stephenson howls with grief in TMD. If you aren't moved, you're not human.

There's loads more but those ones make me howl each time!

Kerantli · 10/08/2018 11:30

Nana in The Royle Family

and two deaths in Call The Midwife had me silently crying in bed

CaptainHammer · 10/08/2018 11:31

reddwarves oh god I’d forgotten about Jimmy :(

pityparty Geoff dying was the saddest Casualty death for me 😭

Magliarosa · 10/08/2018 11:33

Since I was a child I've always cried when Aslan dies, reading the book or any of the TV and film versions I'm in floods, it's more Lucy's reaction that sets me off, she's so devastated.

First ten minutes of Up gets me. Dobby, and Lupin in HP.

I don't normally find I get upset at Soaps but Hayley in Corrie was so well acted and written it did make me cry.

purplestrawberry2 · 10/08/2018 11:34

Just thinking of Dr Greene in ER makes me well up.

George in Greys anatomy.

Also when Amber died in House. Wilson's reaction had me sobbing. I was staying in a tiny b&b at the time and the owners came and asked if I was ok.

Im such a softie

Magliarosa · 10/08/2018 11:35

Just seen one on a PP that I'd forgotten about, David Tennant in Dr Who. Was just watching it with the kids and found myself in floods, it was Rose's reaction that set me off. Seems it's the grief of the people left behind that triggers me!

SadieHH · 10/08/2018 11:36

Assumpta Fitzgerald. And Fr Clifford giving her the last rites. 20 years ago and I'm still not over it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/08/2018 11:38

When Christopher Eccleston died in Cracker. Was a wreck!

kierenthecommunity · 10/08/2018 11:42

It was even more heart breaking in the book as you got the back story in better detail, but Frank and Peggy in Call the Midwife was one of the saddest things ever.

And Jack in Corrie. When they said Vera was returning as a ghost it could have gone one of two ways but they absolutely nailed it.

kierenthecommunity · 10/08/2018 11:44

Gene & Alex saying good bye in Ashes to Ashes. He gives up the woman he loves and I just want him to go, too

And where it showed how the other characters had died, I was a sobbing, snotty mess Sad

CiderwithBuda · 10/08/2018 11:47

So many! Def Mark Greene in ER. And Damon in Brookside - glad someone else mentioned that one! And yes to Cory Monteith and the episode of Glee. Was so sad and you could tell they weren’t acting.

We are only on series 6 I think of Greys so have just had the plane crash. DH laughed at me sobbing about Sloane.

Steel Magnolias- I watched this just after my best friend had moved away and I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. DH rang to see how I was and I couldn’t speak for crying. He actually came home from work early. I just remember saying something about female friendships and sobbing some more.

And yes definitely sobbed at Mrs Landingham and Leo in TWW.

I’m sure there are more.

Deadringer · 10/08/2018 11:52

Ah yes nanna in the royale family, that was very sad and so well done. There are a couple of shockers in the Frankenstein Chronicles but I won't name as i don't want to spoil it for anyone watching, even though it's not new. But the most shocking one for me in recent times was the gorgeous Luke in Corrie, he was lovely and he was murdered in cold blood! Still not quite over that one.

mommybear1 · 10/08/2018 11:55

Dr Greene - still can't hear Over the Rainbow without thinking of him and the version of the song they used 😪🤧

Shambu · 10/08/2018 11:56

I've never cried over a tv serial but I was really shocked about DCI Bilborough and the handsome lawyer in Sprial.

Shambu · 10/08/2018 11:56

*Spiral

MrsJayy · 10/08/2018 12:01

I howled when Sister Evangeline died in CTM she was a fantastic character and it was so unexpected I love a good cry at TV.

MyDirtyLittleSecret · 10/08/2018 12:09

Bambi's mother - far too sad for the child I was
Stan Ogden - Hilda's poor little crumpled face, she broke my heart.
Joyce in Buffy - Buffy finding her - "Mom?" Then in a scared little girl voice "Mommy?"
David Tennant's Dr Who
Ned Stark - I still hadn't got it about GOT, I honestly thought something (highly contrived and implausible) would happen to save him like on a normal tv show.

notsmartenough · 10/08/2018 12:09

Many of the one that have already been mentioned, but just in the past week I cried over Eden in the Handmaid's Tale, mainly because of the other characters and how they reacted.
I also watched an episode of Murdoch Mysteries when a character was pinned by a car and knew that he would die when the car was moved. I was so hoping that Julia would be able to save him.
And damn you Virgin media for not letting us have the Alibi channel any more Angry I'll miss Murdoch!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 10/08/2018 12:20

@mommybear1 oh god, I can't either! Also, that version does appear to be a death song. Sam hears it when he goes back to the future in Life on Mars and is clearly miserable and not really living; before we know that he's going to go back & save the 70s crew so we think they're dead.

It often pops up on tv either when people are moving on from huge traumatic events or when someone's died and life goes on, or when they're about to say someone has died since the programme aired. It's such a bittersweet version.

Doobigetta · 10/08/2018 12:25

Mark Greene and Greg Pratt from ER
Joyce Summers- that "Mommy" line has me going now just thinking about it
Will from the Good Life
Charlie, Sun and Jin from Lost
Poussey from OITNB
Not a death but Dukie's final moments in The Wire
Obie in Sons of Anarchy. Weirdly though, I watched the whole series on tenterhooks for Juice, and when it actually happened I just wished it was over
I don't think any of the deaths in GoT have been as horrific as Ned's. Maybe Oberyn Martell.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 10/08/2018 12:34

“Hold the door!” Sad Yes indeed!

That was a cracking bit of tv - the way it all fell into place...

MsJinglyJones · 10/08/2018 12:44

After watching many series of GOT I thought I could cope with all the death and horror. But then Shireen's death totally floored me :( not just what happened to her but when Ser Davos found out

ExBbqQueen · 10/08/2018 12:44

notsmart that was a heartbreaking episode

I’ve watched it twice & sobbed. I witnessed a horrific car accident the day before on a motorway & the passenger had to be cut out of the vehicle. It brought it all back. I was 3 cars behind & saw it all. I stayed & other drivers stayed for an hour with the occupants until the air ambulance left. It’s left me feeling nervous about my drive on the same road next week.

Hold the door - as you realise Sad

Furrycushion · 10/08/2018 12:50

I don't usually cry at TV, but Grey's Anatomy...
Spoilers
George, Lexi, Mark, Derek... Sad
Probably others too
