Sobbing over the death of a TV character

We are binge watching Boardwalk Empire. My favourite character died last night and I was in bits. It was beautifully done and a shocking end to the season.
I haven't felt this way since Thelma and Louise went over the canyon. Sad

I have known a couple of people who have been really upset, days later, of the death of a tv character. And judging by the thread at the time, Call the Midwife must have led to many tears.

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 12/08/2018 08:28

@Louise2092 my husband and I think that they were actually crying because John Ritter had died (but could be wrong)

BikeRunSki · 12/08/2018 08:39

Also Emma in Terms of Endearment or at least her talking to her boys before she dies

Total sob fest!

One Christmas Eve my sister and I stayed up and watched Terms of Endearment, Love Story and Steel Magnolias. I don’t know what we were thinking!

Lydiaatthebarre · 12/08/2018 09:30

I was devastated when Barbara died in CTM. I felt as if one of my neighbours had suddenly dropped dead.

dorisdog · 12/08/2018 09:34

Any film where the dog dies...I refuse to continue watching Smile

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 12/08/2018 09:51

I won't say who dies in case I spoil it for anyone but I sobbed my fecking heart out at the end of The Tunnel. I felt ridiculous getting so upset about a fictional character but I was genuinely gutted.

friedfanny · 12/08/2018 10:32

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Assumpta dying in Ballykissangel. It was such a shock as well.

There are so many films that make me cry, the kids seem to think it's entertainment and deliberately pick films to watch knowing that I'll cry.

GabsAlot · 12/08/2018 10:33

oh john coffey its an amazing performance im still gutted he didnt get the oscar

RandomUsernameHere · 12/08/2018 10:41

Elvis in Our Girl. I still haven't really got over it Sad

CaptainHammer · 12/08/2018 10:53

helentad that was a horrible moment in Goodnight Mister Tom. I still can’t see the actress who plays the mum in that as a nice person in Call The Midwife! The end where he calls Tom dad always has me crying too but at least that’s for a good reason.

martakeithy · 12/08/2018 10:54

Agree all Grey's Anatomy posts. In fact I have probably cried at the end of every other episode
Also was bereft at both the book and film "One Day" where Em dies. It was such a shock when I read the book and even when I expected it in the film.
I think it may have been because I grew up through the same eras as the characters and it felt very poignant. I could barely finish the book after the death. Sad
How could David Nicholls do that to her! Shock George RR Martin seems to delight in bumping off popular, 'good' characters, then hurriedly ressurecting them on occasion.

Louise2092 · 12/08/2018 12:44

Princessisaunicorn - that's why it gets me... It's not so much acting but their actual emotions :(

FoofFighter · 12/08/2018 18:49

Remembered another, the movie Stepmom

Castieldeansam · 12/08/2018 22:19

malfoyy Arthur in merlin fullfilled his destiny by his legends, he united the kingdoms and he was prophesied to die at the hand of the Druid boy as he did. Just finished www.allrecipes.com/recipe/14834/simple-artichoke-dip/rewatching them 4 days ago and it is still sad, though I didn't remember the dragon saying it was the end of his time too, which I also found sad. They don't make them like this anymore!

Castieldeansam · 12/08/2018 22:20

Didn't mean to post an artichoke dip recipe in the middle of this!!!! 😂

martakeithy · 12/08/2018 22:45

Haha. Castie 😂. Yum! I'm drained after reading this thread, so need a snack now.

Pumkinfailure · 12/08/2018 22:49

Damon from Brookside! I cried with Debbie for days!!!

SadieHH · 12/08/2018 23:06

friedfanny I mentioned Assumpta. That was horrible. Still haven't forgiven the writer Angry

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 12/08/2018 23:08

Also a mess when Cal died. And Jeff. And Patrick, actually, going back a bit. And a few others. I need to get out more. I really should care less about Casualty. I was mildly sad to see the choice of death on Saturday was Sam - I was hoping to bump Alicia and Eddie off, so we could ditch this storyline!

Sirius, Remus, Dobby are also dark spots.

Mind you, I also cried when gollum died while (re) reading the Lord of the Rings the other day, so possibly I'm not normal.

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 12/08/2018 23:14

@Louise2092 snap, gets me every time I see it 😢😭

bonquiqui · 12/08/2018 23:20

OITNB SPOILER - I burst into tears just last night when Blanca was taken straight into immigration detention instead of getting released. She's not even dead, but I just got so upset with the injustice of the whole system and the image of her boyfriend waiting outside with flowers 😭

LegallyBrunet · 12/08/2018 23:21

Arthur Digby and Raf Di Luca in Holby City
Arthur in Merlin
First ten minutes of UP
Barbara in Call the Midwife
All of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Willow2017 · 13/08/2018 09:48

I cried when he was beaten by the men from Gondor just when he had rid himself of 'Gollum' and was so happy. He is such a tragic character, a victim of fate (although he did kill his friend to get the ring but was that the rings doing?)

Sirius, Remus and Dobby definately.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 13/08/2018 14:20

I find him heartbreaking, pretty much throughout. His conduct isn't entirely defensible, no, but he suffered horrifically and was entirely pitiable.

The Champ with Jon Voigt. No!!!!!
