To think this was an overreaction by teacher

One of my Friend's is a teacher and was supposed to be away for a few days. I was surprised to bump into her yesterday and she rolled her eyes and said two kids from her class had turned up at the same hotel so she insisted to her husband that they leave.

She said she wouldn't be able to relax, use the hotel swimming pool and changing room, have a drink etc without looking over her shoulder, and neither did she want parents coming over to talk about their kid's progress while she was on holidays.

Would most teachers feel like this or was that an over reaction?

Its about a pupil being able to put a picture of you around the world in seconds of the picture being taken.

Its about knowing that any picture of you will be out there fot all to see forever.

And its about a stupid education system that seems to think that we should be on duty 24/7 365.

TornFromTheInside · 10/08/2018 19:07

There are all sorts of complications when a teacher's private life crosses path with pupils. Normally it's perfectly ok if it's in a supermarket etc, but in a hotel over a prolonged period, it can get messy.

Depending on the age of the kids, it means a teacher might struggle to show affection to her partner (kissing, cuddling etc), drinking alcohol, or wearing certain clothing (swimsuits) etc can all cause issues. With the advent of social media, it only takes one parent or pupil to post a picture of a teacher in a swimsuit for all hell to break out. It's just not worth it for more teachers.

Rosetree7 · 10/08/2018 19:07

Ridiculous overreaction. I wouldn't give a shit who turned up on my holiday, I wouldn't leave. Obviously got more money than sense to just throw away a holiday like that.

And teachers complain about not being paid enough? Yeah right! Wink

So what job do you do and what are the implications if "inappropriate pictures" where passed around your work place or put on the internet?

None of your business.

Also, no matter what job anyone does, they wouldn't want people they know taking photos of them (against their will,) and posting them online.

WTF is so special about TEACHERS?! Confused

Very precious behaviour.

How on earth do these people cope in everyday life?

user1486250399 · 10/08/2018 19:14

I am a teacher and I would have moved hotel 100%

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/08/2018 19:18

@Rosetree7

Its not about being special, its about the response from employers and the high probability that you could lose your job for doing something normal.

Rosetree7 · 10/08/2018 19:21

Don't talk nonsense.

No-one will lose their job for doing nothing wrong!

As I said, massive over-reaction.

I am in a career that is WAY more important than 'a teacher,' and no way would I leave my holiday, if someone appeared, who I didn't want to see.

And no, I am NOT telling you what I do.

pinkorchids · 10/08/2018 19:22

It's bad enough seeing kids in the supermarket let alone on holiday! I would hate it. I probably wouldn't have left due to not being able to afford to go somewhere else instead but it would have definitely upset my holiday.

TornFromTheInside · 10/08/2018 19:23

Teenagers can easily doctor a photo of you in a swimsuit to look far worse still.
One photo of you laughing and drinking can look like you're drunk. Questionable parents can use this to criticise you, and 'prankster' teens can post it all over Facebook. These are very real issues for many teachers.

Life for a teacher, particularly a female can hugely problematic when a group of teens are sharing photos of you in swimsuits, or sunbathing or just kissing a partner. They deserve privacy, but due to the nature of some parents and some pupils, it's not always possible in a shared hotel!

GandTthankyou · 10/08/2018 19:30

Depends on the families but yeah probs would’ve left!

I am in a career that is WAY more important than 'a teacher,'

At least in your own head.

and no way would I leave my holiday, if someone appeared, who I didn't want to see

Good for you.

And no, I am NOT telling you what I do.

I really don't care. I was trying to get you to think of the different terms and conditions of the job.

TornFromTheInside · 10/08/2018 19:31

It's not about importance (and are you seriously making judgments about which careers are important and which aren't?).
It's about the likely risk when dealing with children.

You could be a brain surgeon, but there be little risk from photos of you in a swimsuit - because the effects are minimal, but for a teacher, photos in a swimsuit can be hugely problematic.

There are specific laws for people working with children BECAUSE it's considered a different role than most others. The conduct of teachers (and others in similar professions) is hugely affected outside of the working norms for most other people.

The fact that you proclaim your own career 'WAY more important' demonstrates a complete lack of understanding.

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/08/2018 19:35

@Rosetree7

Well aren’t you a delight?! Hmm

Wineallthetime · 10/08/2018 19:41

@Rosetree7
Could I ask if your job that's "way more important" is the result of a good education?

crazycatgal · 10/08/2018 19:49

@Rosetree7 If your job is so important then tell all of us what it is.

Teachers have to adhere to the teachers' standards, inside and outside of school.

Lizzie48 · 10/08/2018 19:53

@Rosetree7

I am in a career that is WAY more important than 'a teacher,' and no way would I leave my holiday, if someone appeared, who I didn't want to see.

How can it be more important than training up the next generation of professionals, i.e. doctors, lawyers, obviously teachers and also including the important job that you do?

Just what is your beef against teachers? Was there a teacher who gave you a hard time in primary school?

TornFromTheInside · 10/08/2018 19:54

I think you're fighting a losing battle with someone who considers their role 'WAY more important'.
It reminds me of the Army General leading hundreds of men into battle, many of whom could and will die as a result.
Then there's the 'lowly' radio operator who could equally many men their lives if he fails to deliver the message.

In my considerable lifetime, I've yet to come across anybody who commanded respect by claiming their role was way more important. Self-aggrandising isn't the marque of such a person.

YeTalkShiteHen · 10/08/2018 19:55

You missed out self in front of important.

I can’t be arsed with teacher bashing. Some are, of course, shite as in any profession. But find a good teacher, an inspirational teacher who loves what they do and hasn’t had the oomph knocked out of them by wanky parents and arsehole kids yet and they can change a child’s life.

Who else can say they do that?

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/08/2018 19:58

Probably time for this again

Redsharks · 10/08/2018 19:59

NOT an overreaction IMO. If I'm doing my food shop and notice a student I feel myself change slightly ffs🙈 (by that I mean, watch what I say etc and pray to mercy my girls don't say or do anything daft within earshot!)

WhyAreWeddingsSoAwks · 10/08/2018 19:59

I live opposite one of my yr10s.
As in his house overlooks my garden and lounge...
I can understand this teacher but I think she might need some perspective Grin

Oldieandgoldie · 10/08/2018 20:06

Not just teachers...what about doctors, nurses, therapists and -ologists?

Seniorcitizen1 · 10/08/2018 20:10

She should have booked adults only hotel

GandTthankyou · 10/08/2018 20:14

@Rosetree7

We don’t think we’re special but you obviously think you are ms ‘far more important job’.

What a twat you are!
