To think that some types of 'western dress' e.g; high heels are as oppressive as the burka?

Don't get me wrong; I have worn heels in the past in the dubious hope that they look 'sexy.' I have mostly ended up hobbling along at the end of the evening in pain and fed up, envious of those wearing trainers.
I do realise that women have a 'choice ' to wear garments such as heels, mini skirts and boob tubes but aibu to think that they are not garments of liberation but rather an over sexualised aesthetic imposed by the patriarchy.

I am not a massive fan of the burka and I do think that they have been enforced by the patriarchy for a different reason; to protect the modesty of the woman. I am very against the burka ban and I think Boris Johnson is a prick for his comments.

So both types of dress control women in different ways; the western dress to promote sexuality and the burka to hide it.

In short, women should wear what they want without government enforcement and comments from Boris and his ilk.

And before we talk about seeing women's faces when we talk to them and the obstruction to that that the burka causes; what about a full face of slap that many western girls embrace now?

Any piece of clothing is oppressive if you're being forced to wear it against your will.
Exactly. But I'm not confined to my home for not wearing heels (or anything else).

Jaxhog · 09/08/2018 21:33

I disagree with concealing your face in any way or form. So I object to face covering balaclavas etc. too. They all conceal your identity in a society that relies on being able to recognise people.

I hate the burqa too for why women wear them. It is intended to suppress women from taking a full part in our society. If I was forced to wear very high heels or a hobble skirt (which I'm not), I would have a problem with that too.

If school uniform is an accepted part of U.K. society, than so must the burka be

That is one of my all time favourite batshit mumsnet quotes Grin

Countries that have banned the burka also dislike school uniform.

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/08/2018 21:38

I tend to agree with you OP, although I do wear heels.

They're not high though - I can walk comfortably in them, and like the way they look as part of a work outfit.

But fully accept that I've been socialised to think that.

The U.K. is very accepting of oppressive, obscurantist dress rules.

Batshit!? So true. The above is front runner.🤣

I still marvel that the taliban didn’t force women to wear high heels or even school uniforms instead of the burqa - as all are so equally oppressive.

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 21:46

If you cannot see that school uniforms are not oppressive, that is only because you have been very effectively socialised into your own oppression.

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 21:46

Are oppressive

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 21:51

You are tripping over your burqa now.
Lol

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 21:53

And you are oppressed and cannot see it...

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 21:54

Shoes and uniforms are so weird these days. Face enveloping? Who woulda thunk it!

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 21:58

You sound very silly. School uniforms are horrendous things that most countries forbid...

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 22:08

Far easier to insult those who point out your contradictions than to actually think about the reasoning...

Tinycitrus · 09/08/2018 22:12

Hmm all those public floggings for not wearing school uniform...

Okaaay...

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 09/08/2018 22:17

Bloody hell, school uniform is oppressive?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 09/08/2018 22:17

What about professional uniforms?

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 22:27

Corporate image is also utterly oppressive. It seems that very soon the uniform might be extended to the head and face zone.

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 22:28

Uniforms only ever have a place in a free society if they are strictly necessary for reasons of identification, health and safety etc.

RoseWhiteTips · 09/08/2018 22:29

It is scary to think airline staff might be required to implement it too. Might make the smiling st the passengers thing tricky.

user1499173618 · 09/08/2018 22:30

Yes, corporate image is frequent used as a way to oppress and control. Our highly institutionalised society uses concepts such as corporate image to control the population in myriad ways.

A society of SMEs is much freer.

NO UNIFORM OUTSIDE ISLAM COVERS THE FACE
