Duplicate stuff - I need to return it, don’t I?

I ordered all of DS’s school uniform from Sainsbury’s.

I’ve been sent two pair of school shoes, two pairs of trainers and two pairs of shorts.

I only paid for one of each. It was a pretty large order so I suspect the picker got confused.

I have to ‘fess up and return them, don’t I?

Or AIBU to keep them? Or return the duplicates for a refund? Or pop them on a selling site?

Jesus - as I typed that I realised I’m BU.

Mumsnet jury?

Meh, I would probably keep them. I'm not exactly winning the most moral of the year award though. Sainsbury's is a huge company, it's not like someone is going to lose their livelihood over it.

Stormwhale · 07/08/2018 22:29

I think returning them for a refund is worse though. Not sure why.

bridgetreilly · 07/08/2018 22:30

True story: I ordered something from Amazon, realised it wasn't quite what I wanted, so ordered what I did want from eBay. When the second Amazon package arrived with a duplicate, I duly contacted them and arranged to return it.

Only of course it wasn't. The eBay seller had just re-used some Amazon packaging. Which I didn't work out until it was too late to retrieve the free gift I had just sent Amazon...

But in your case, OP, contact them and check what they want you to do.

Merryoldgoat · 07/08/2018 22:30

Yes, I agree.

Email them and ask them what they want you to do with them, they may well tell you to hold on to them.
Otherwise the guilt will get to you!

Doyoumind · 07/08/2018 22:31

Their systems won't show you have two of everything so if you try to return them you'll get refunded. I would just do this. I know it's morally questionable but they're a big company and it's not going to make much difference to them.

OlennasWimple · 07/08/2018 22:32

I ordered something a few months ago and the RM tracking said that it had got lost. The seller was very apologetic and sent a replacement asap - at which point the original turned up as well. I admit I flickered about just keeping the stuff, but did contact the seller to let them know and agree what to do (they sent me a postage paid return envelope for the duplicate item)

Come on, OP, you know what to do

Think of the bad karma if you just keep it

JupiterBelle · 07/08/2018 22:33

I’d probably be worried that they’d clock their mistake if they had the receipt/order number. But I wouldn’t be telling them about their mistake.

MoominMamaBear · 07/08/2018 22:33

I would email/Facebook messenger them and say what’s happened. They’ll more than likely tell you to keep them.

KittyHawke80 · 07/08/2018 22:34

I’d give the extra to the food bank, frankly.

Lazypuppy · 07/08/2018 22:35

I'd keep them. Wouldn't even think to return

ShadyLady53 · 07/08/2018 22:35

Similar thing has happened to me but it was a piece of jewellery worth about £100. I fessed up and they let me keep it, “as a gift with our compliments for your honesty.”

Be honest, you’ll be rewarded with a clear conscience if nothing else!

Merryoldgoat · 07/08/2018 22:47

DH says ‘just keep it.’

It’s what I ‘want’ to do but the guilt will get me, I’ll call tomorrow and tell them.

Either let them know and arrange to return them if that's what they want you to do, or give it to a school uniform charity. Our local council runs a sponsor a child scheme where you buy uniform etc for a child who's circumstances make it difficult for them to buy things for school.
Definitely don't try to profit from the mistake though, that's just wrong

thebewilderness · 07/08/2018 23:02

When that has happened to me I contacted them and they said keep it so I donated the duplicate.

ALemonyPea · 07/08/2018 23:03

Take them to your nearest store and tell them what happened?

WhendoIgetadayoff · 07/08/2018 23:03

Uniform clothes bank if you have one. They’ve made a mistake let someone else benefit

ThatchersCold · 07/08/2018 23:05

Bridget - chances are what happened to you was that you ordered from a drop shipper on eBay, who then bought the goods on amazon but had them sent directly to you (there are a lot of companies who make their living from doing this).

Grimbles · 07/08/2018 23:08

Email them and leave the ball in their court. It's more hassle to them to return it so they will probably tell you to keep it and your conscience will be clear!

RoseWhiteTips · 07/08/2018 23:11

Of course you return. To do otherwise is theft.
🙄

RoseWhiteTips · 07/08/2018 23:12

...return them

RoseWhiteTips · 07/08/2018 23:13

They’ve made a mistake? Hmmmm Wonderful moral compass right there. Oh dear.

Kolo · 07/08/2018 23:15

My nan would say “I wouldn’t want to lose some poor picking boy his job” and keep it. I’d feel a bit weird about sending stuff for a refund, as that would be me deliberately trying to cheat someone. But keeping quiet about their own mistake? I’d have no guilt at all. Have you seen how much profit they make from us each year? I think giving the extra uniform to a clothing bank is a really good idea.

Fang2468 · 07/08/2018 23:23

Id just keep it, and admit it and send it back if they get in touch with you.

Fang2468 · 07/08/2018 23:26

Why is it theft? The OP hasn’t stolen them, she’s been sent duplicates to her address. She hasn’t asked for them, or tried to defraud the company in any way (unless she gets a refund).
It will cost her in time, effort and postage to call them and post them back - she would be out of pocket to do this.
