Duplicate stuff - I need to return it, don’t I?

Merryoldgoat · 07/08/2018 22:27

I ordered all of DS’s school uniform from Sainsbury’s.

I’ve been sent two pair of school shoes, two pairs of trainers and two pairs of shorts.

I only paid for one of each. It was a pretty large order so I suspect the picker got confused.

I have to ‘fess up and return them, don’t I?

Or AIBU to keep them? Or return the duplicates for a refund? Or pop them on a selling site?

Jesus - as I typed that I realised I’m BU.

Mumsnet jury?

@Merryoldgoat sorry OP, just seen your post where you've contacted them!

Thegirlinthefireplace · 08/08/2018 10:18

I know you've already early with it but you did exactly what I would have done. If they wanted them returned I would have ensured it was at their cost and inconvenience (ie they arrange to collect from me) at which point I would expect them to say just keep them, being a big company and all. Alls well that ends well.

Monapaloma · 08/08/2018 10:27

I don't get this about mnet.
Posts like this one, about tiny insignificant issues, have posters going crazy. Everybody has an opinion on what is right and what is wrong. Suddenly all these saintly people sprout out from under their rocks, insistent they'd NEVER EVER keep a few pennies worth of cheap textiles . But there are other threads on here about things that are really relevant , issues that seriously affect our futures, and nobody seems to answer or care? why is this?
I never meet anyone in real life like these saintly mumsnetters?
I'd be totally delighted at the prospect of a bit of free uniform after having my pockets totally Emptied during the summer hols by my little gang. I'd justify my position by the fact that I've spent seventy zillion in sainsbos cafe and more often than not get a shit coffee/ shit breakfast/ sticky table.

cameltoeflappyflapflap · 08/08/2018 10:36

Contact the shop but they will probably tell you to keep them.

If you don't need them all you could hand some into a charity shop or second hand uniform shop.

SupposedStudent · 08/08/2018 16:06

It's not "saintly" po-facedness. It's not fancying thinking of myself as a dishonest person. I like to feel okay about myself.

And the reason it's popular is because it's interesting to think through what one would do about a hypothetical (for all but the OP) ethical dilemma and discuss it with others.

londonfeather · 08/08/2018 16:26

Don’t feel guilty for Sainsbury’s!!! It’s a drop in the ocean for them...

Nebularin · 08/08/2018 16:31

Return them.

Nebularin · 08/08/2018 16:33

Why on earth do you continue to go there then Grin I've never liked the look of the cafe to be honest.

Lynne1Cat · 08/08/2018 16:33

Keep them... Sainsbury's makes a huge profit, and they won't miss a few quid.

Goth237 · 08/08/2018 19:18

It amazes me how many dishonest people there are who think it's OK to keep things which aren't yours. I have returned anything which I've been given too much of- e.g. very recently I was sent an extra set of baby joggers and I emailed them straight away to tell them and then I took them back. I have also been under-charged for food which I pointed out. I guess I'm just one of the better, more honest people who was brought up correctly...

Goth237 · 08/08/2018 19:21

There is no ambiguity about what the right thing to do is. It is wrong to keep something given in error that you haven't paid for. That's it. It's not about how much money the company makes and how it's just a "drop in the bucket/ocean". That doesn't matter. You didn't pay for it, you shouldn't have it. I would say it's on par with stealing.

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 19:36

If you are happy to keep stuff that you haven't paid for them at least own your decision. People who try to find an 'excuse' to keep it are really annoying.

If you don't like 'sainsbos' cafe then don't go there! 💁🏻‍♀️

Monapaloma · 08/08/2018 21:12

@Nebularin because it has great accessibility and is the only place open locally when my little one has swimming training and I need to kill time.
And I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt..... I'm an optimist Grin

frogsoup · 09/08/2018 22:51

"I guess I'm just one of the better, more honest people who was brought up correctly..."

Did your upbringing not teach you that priggish self-righteousness is a very unattractive character trait? Because I'd say that's at least as important as whether your moral compass happens to extend to actively protecting the profits of large multinational companies.

DaintySong · 10/08/2018 00:06

Better than being a thief..
People are so selfish and horrible, it's sad. No wonder there are so many problems with this world.

KittyHawke80 · 10/08/2018 09:06

frogsoup - Ame.

KittyHawke80 · 10/08/2018 09:06

Amen

frogsoup · 10/08/2018 09:27

They can be horrible, I agree. Some people like to make other people feel bad by parading their own illusory moral superiority. Others decide that worrying unduly about whether to make a multinational pay for their own error is not a particularly significant moral dilemma. They perhaps prefer to prioritize their interactions with individual human beings, and rather than needlessly berating the op and pointlessly bemoaning the state of modern morality, have suggested for instance that donating the items to a refuge would be an excellent solution. You say potato...

RedDogsBeg · 13/08/2018 12:02

Apart from the fact that it is not legally or morally yours to donate.

The ultimate irony being of course that the hated multinational puts prices up to offset their losses and who are the people that struggle most when this happens?

RoseWhiteTips · 13/08/2018 13:11

Exactly. Some people appear not to be capable of seeing the bigger picture.

M3lon · 13/08/2018 13:21

its getting a bit cancel the cheque in here...the OP has contacted S'burys and been given permission to keep. She is donating the items.

Everyone is a winner...no need for any angst.

whatonearthcoulditbe · 13/08/2018 13:26

Keep them or the picker might get in trouble

RedDogsBeg · 13/08/2018 13:33

Well aware of that M3Ion. My point was about a particular attitude not the OP's situation.

Beingginger · 13/08/2018 13:37

This happened to me with marks and spencer, I got the same order twice with over £200 of uniform. I rang and explained and arranged the return and a week later they refunded the money back to my card. I rang back to try and explain but they couldn’t understand what I was on about so I had free uniforms last year!

frogsoup · 13/08/2018 17:48

"Some people appear not to be capable of seeing the bigger picture."

Oh the irony! It's about a couple of clothing items so significant legally and morally to Sainsbury's that they themselves told the op to just keep them. Save your moral outrage for all the actual moral outrages there are in the world. Also, find better ways of boosting your self-esteem than parading your moral superiority over others on threads like this.

As for Sainsbury's needing to raise their prices because of people keeping the odd pair of trousers sent to them in error - seriously?! There speaks someone who knows very little about the relative importance of the various factors that influence the cost of goods!
