Duplicate stuff - I need to return it, don’t I?

Merryoldgoat · 07/08/2018 22:27

I ordered all of DS’s school uniform from Sainsbury’s.

I’ve been sent two pair of school shoes, two pairs of trainers and two pairs of shorts.

I only paid for one of each. It was a pretty large order so I suspect the picker got confused.

I have to ‘fess up and return them, don’t I?

Or AIBU to keep them? Or return the duplicates for a refund? Or pop them on a selling site?

Jesus - as I typed that I realised I’m BU.

Mumsnet jury?

John Lewis sent me duplicates of 2 expensive items when I first moved into my house. When I called them they told us to keep them.

seven201 · 08/08/2018 07:52

I'd email them and ask them what they want to do with them. I'd also say (if true) that you don't regularly go to Sainsburys so if they do want you to return it, it won't be very soon.

Merryoldgoat · 08/08/2018 07:52

Wow - 3 more pages when I’ve said I’m going to call Sainsbury’s first thing!

They open at 8am so I’ll call then.

It is not theft. One of the essential elements is "dishonestly appropriate" which the op has not done. It's been an error and it's a civil matter.

OliviaStabler · 08/08/2018 08:00

To anyone saying for the OP should keep the items; do you complain when prices go up in shops?

Part of the reason is that people think it's fine to keep things sent in error as 'the company won't notice' etc. I can tell you they do and the cost of these items sent in error and the like is added onto other goods to cover the shortfall.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 08:10

OP that is a good idea, hopefully they will say keep them if not it looks like they should collect them - at a time convenient to you as they should not put you out in any way as it was their mistake

Update us won't you.Smile

Merryoldgoat · 08/08/2018 08:22

‘Nick’ at Sainsburys has confirmed it’s their error, apologised, and has advised I should keep the items.

I will donate them as we don’t have use for the duplicates.

Nice one Nick!

See, I told you to phone and ask. BTW, how can an extra set of school clothes not be useful. I'd hand on to them.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 08:27

Thats good, I'm also wondering though why they won't be useful, the state DS's used to get in sometime.

sar501 · 08/08/2018 08:27

It’s nice of you to donate them OP. I’m sure someone out there will really appreciate that

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 08:27

Merryoldgoat · 08/08/2018 08:39

The extras I have are a 2pk if shorts (already bought 2 pairs), school shoes and PE trainers.

My giant son will grow out of the shoes and trainers before they can be used.

If it had been clothing I’d probably have kept it owing to all the ripped knees and stained shirts etc. that I have to replace.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 08:52

Oh I see, not shirts or trousers then, yes I should donate them then, someone will be very glad of them

Merryoldgoat · 08/08/2018 08:59

No, shirts or trousers I’d deffo keep. I’ve bought 6 shirts and 4 pairs of trousers so that should get me through the first half term Grin

Just keep them in their packaging and unused while you wait for them to ask for them back or you decide what you want to do with them

BlueEyedPersephone · 08/08/2018 09:04

I would donate the shoes to food bank and keep the shorts. The company will have no record if it was not on the packing slip so will struggle to correct it even if they wanted to.
Don't feel bad.

Clockwork95 · 08/08/2018 09:17

This happened to me once with amazon. I emailed to tell them and as a "gesture of goodwill" they suggested i just keep them. Free stuff and no guilt!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/08/2018 09:28

They've got six years to recover this; if they notice it.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 09:34

The OP has updated, RTFT, Sainsburys told her to keep them.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/08/2018 09:51

Well that’s absolutely fine. However, this is about something else entirely: the first response to a situation like that being to keep the items - without contacting the actual “owners”, in this case the
supermarket.

cloudtree · 08/08/2018 09:54

I had this happen with a £3000 engagement ring. We returned the duplicate of course. Not a word heard back from the company and DM then pointed out that someone would probably have lost their job over it and so I've always felt a bit guilty even though it clearly wasn't my fault in any way.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2018 10:03

You don't have to return the goods yourself, you inform them in these situations, if they want them they collect at your convenience. It is their error, they collect.

PrimalLass · 08/08/2018 10:05

Meh. I ended up with a free Dyson that way. I told two different members of staff there was a mistake with click and collect and to send back the extra one. They didn't and eventually refunded me for the non collected one. They were told.

llangennith · 08/08/2018 10:08

I'd keep them.

strawberrry · 08/08/2018 10:09

If you email them they'll probably tell you to keep them. If I were to keep them and they were unneeded I'd probably pass them onto a friend or a food bank.
