WIBU to ask for more chips?

We were supposed to be having salad tonight for tea but I —accidentally— ate most of the baby plum tomatoes this morning, so my penance was to pick up a chippy tea on the way home. It wasn’t busy, only one person in being detected when I got there. I ordered a fish butty for DP and a chip butty for me (no kids). I paid £6 all together (live in Yorkshire) and this is all I got!!

The chippy is local, and usually much more generous than this.

Was I being unreasonable to drive back to the chippy, via the bloody temporary traffic lights to ask where the rest of my chips were?

@PixieN that's a scallop in Yorkshire. Food of the gods 🙌🏼

crunchtime · 08/08/2018 18:12

When I lived in West Yorkshire as a student i was asked if if wanted a teacake when they meant a barmcake
A teacake should have currants in. I was mystified. .
It's a chippy tea here in the northwest.

Attitude84 · 08/08/2018 18:14

Frouby!! Absolutely howling at the ‘big bastarding’ hill!!!! Hilarious!!

OP go get yourself some more chips!!! On the house!

Jeanclaudejackety · 08/08/2018 18:19

Potatoes have gone expensive at the moment. The decent quality ones have shot up. So the owners will have told the staff to watch portions.

How much is a regular portion of chips there? Say its 1.50 and a barm is 50p, you should be paying 2 quid for a chip barm. That should be a full portion of chips. However in our local chippy a chip barm is 1.50 so it is expected that you get less chips than a normal regular portion as the barm is included in the price. If you see what I mean. So you basically get 2/3rds of a portion plus a barm. If people want a larger amount of chips (this is what my DP does) they buy a regular portion of chips and a barm separate. Costing more.

I used to live round the corner from an amazing chippy. It was taken over and obviously we crossed our fingers that the new owners would carry on the good work. Went in to check it out and asked for a chip cob. The new guy was a bit nonplused by the request (not a good sign), but after some additional detail from us, he placed a sesame seed burger bun (not the big floury bap we were used to) in the middle of a piece of grease-proof paper, placed 7 or 8 chips on the bun and positioned the other half of the burger bun on top of the tiny pile of chips. He went to wrap it up, but not surprisingly we declined to buy his creation.

In short, OP count your lucky stars!

Jeanclaudejackety · 08/08/2018 18:21

If my local chippy put scraps on everything as usual there'd be riots! It's all people asking for lightly battered fish as they can't manage all the batter round here. Weirdos.

Snowcookie · 08/08/2018 18:22

I still haven't recovered from the trauma of visiting Yorkshire and being so excited that the chip shops there sold scallops, only to realise that they weren't the delicious morsels of shellfish that I'd been anticipating, but were in fact potato fritters.

Thankfully the price made me pause and I googled to check, so I didn't make a complete fool of myself by buying any.

manicmij · 08/08/2018 18:28

Never had a chip butty from shop but have made my own from chips included with fish. I know - glutton. The amount of chips shown look as if they would fill the roll with some over. Suppose if it's not what you usually get you would be disappointed but seems okay to me.

When I was young my little brother asked for some chips whilst we were all watching tv. My dad asked me to make some. I can’t actually remember how old I was but I was in junior school so maybe about 9 or 10. So I put them in the oven, it was electric, a whole tray full and when they were ready I served them for him. They looked a bit tasty so I decided to have one. As it was so nice I thought I’d have another. And then another. I soon realised that I had managed to eat most of them. Leaving 4 chips! Blush
I still brazenly took the plate out for my brother to eat! My dad took one look and roared with laughter! He asked why I had made him 4 chips but I was too embarrassed to admit I’d eaten them all. So said that I didn’t think he was that hungry. From that day on, for ages, he called me “four chips!”

Kool4katz · 08/08/2018 18:32

Snowcookie It wasn't until I moved darn sarf that I discovered that scallops were actually shellfish there. Yuck! I don't do seafood at all. Battered potato fritters are yummy in comparison. 😋

KatyaZamolodchikova · 08/08/2018 18:34

@Jeanclaudejackety

A chip butty costs a portion of chips, plus 50p for whatever you want to call the bread.

littlebillie · 08/08/2018 18:36

There's a chippy near us that does THREE types of curry sauce 😌

Jeanclaudejackety · 08/08/2018 18:37

Katya (one of my fave drag race queens of all time BTW!) I'd ask for it seperate next time that way they can't get away with shorting on the chips.

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 08/08/2018 18:44

I’m from the south (well North London) and whenever I’ve bought a chip butty, the butty (sesame burger bun) would be invisible until at least a dozen chips eaten, eventually becoming manageable enough to eat as a sandwich. Until then the bun is literally “cupping” a decent pile of chips and soaking up a little puddle of vinegar in the bottom.

libra101 · 08/08/2018 18:45

They're more generous with chip supplies in Lancashire!

Aprilsinparis · 08/08/2018 18:49

I've just finished a chicken salad......being very pious.....I want chiiiiippps,.....NOW!!!! Buggah the bloody diet!!!!!

AnExcellentUsername · 08/08/2018 18:50

Burger bun??!! Blasphemy!

Also I can't believe that there are chippies with three types of curry sauce but yet there are places that look at like you're mental if you ask for gravy.

Silver1022 · 08/08/2018 18:51

You would have been better off getting fish and chips and make the butty at home.

CakeNinja · 08/08/2018 18:51

I’m on holiday but just had to WhatsApp my friend who lives near our nearest chippy to ask how much chips cost. She went down (thanks If you’re reading Ser!) and she called me back to say chips are £4.20 a portion!

YukonGold · 08/08/2018 18:51

That not only looks a measly portion but those chips look positively anemic!

Silver1022 · 08/08/2018 18:53

And why is it only in the south east that you can get rock and chips.

BackBoiler · 08/08/2018 18:55

Ask for chips and a breadcake next time. PS I am jealous because our local chippy is gross!

WoollyMollyMonkey · 08/08/2018 18:58

£6 for that! Tha’s bin had gal.

Caribbeanyesplease · 08/08/2018 18:59

We were supposed to be having salad tonight

For me that was the funniest line of whole thread.

No one would seriously be planning a salad and then replace with a chip butty!

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 08/08/2018 19:00

As you are in the Bradford area OP I can recommend the Singing Fryer in Low Moor - fab fish or Yorkshire fishcake butties, so I am assuming their chip I tried are good too. It's near my work but I've just started mat leave, so can't partake for a year 😐
