Buying a door without a partner

chemenger · 07/08/2018 16:36

According to a local company I cannot buy a door, or even discuss buying a door without my husband present. The woman on the phone had the cheek to ask me if I was able to make decisions “like this” on my own. The massive decision of what kind of back door I want. I checked my calendar and I haven’t slipped back in time to 1918. Needless to say I have found another company who is willing to deal with me no questions asked.
I assume I have just escaped a long session of hard selling and they wanted DH and I both there so I couldn’t get rid of them by using the excuse that I had to consult him. Again this is the 21st century. The company I am buying from has its prices on the internet, no “sign now or you’ll lose your discount” nonsense.
My mostly male colleagues agreed that their door selection skills were no better than their partners but that they would have liked to have overheard my conversation on the phone. To think that I used to be allowed to choose equipment for chemical plants and now I can’t be trusted with a door.

Yep! We had an hilarious afternoon with a rep from one of these companies. Absolute madness.

This drives me mad. A couple of years ago I was buying a sofa, all by myself and the salesman kept addressing questions to DH. Absolutely drive me mad. I kept saying it's my money, I'm choosing it but he was adamant that couldn't be right. He even "joked" that I was spending his money. If I hadn't loved the sofa I would have walked out.

chemenger · 07/08/2018 16:57

I was asked when DH would be available and I said “next August” which is very nearly true, he’s working abroad.

To be completely fair I was eventually allowed to make an appointment, I’ve now cancelled it in an email which spells out why.

What would happen if, god forbid, you were single Shock or.....had a same-sex partner?

Would you and your wife be allowed to buy a door?

HostaToFortune · 07/08/2018 16:58

@LongSummerDays me too Grin

blackchina · 07/08/2018 17:00

Bonkers!

If they won't let HIM buy a 'door' without his lady's input, then fine (though still odd!) But is it coz U R a fick wumman?! Hmm

SoyDora · 07/08/2018 17:00

I know that due to the cost of our recent replacement door, DH and I would need to agree on it

We would have agreed a budget beforehand, if it was within that budget I could make a decision without hesitation. If it was above that budget I could probably still use my judgement as to whether it was worth it or not!

If you're single, what are you supposed to do? Not buy a door and simply barricade yourself in with a ladder and a pile of cereal boxes?

Haworthia · 07/08/2018 17:03

It’s an old high pressure sales technique beloved of door and window sellers. They come round, give you a quote and demand you sign up there and then. You can’t get out of it by saying “I’ll have to talk to my husband and get back to you”.

I recommend you find an independent company who’ll just sell you a fucking door Grin

cjt110 · 07/08/2018 17:03

Is this Safestyle? I've seen a thread similar about them on here before. Basically, it's apparently so that you can't say "Oh, I'll have to check with my significant other" and not order immediately from them.

SoyDora · 07/08/2018 17:03

This is why I always use local independent companies.

cjt110 · 07/08/2018 17:04

GladAllOver · 07/08/2018 17:05

Well I not only bought a new back door myself, but I fitted it myself too.

sexnotgender · 07/08/2018 17:05

Do you need to sign the order form with a penis?

Loonoon · 07/08/2018 17:05

I had similar recently when I was arranging some work in the house. The guy I eventually decided to use questioned my giving him the go ahead without checking with DH. I told him DH was far too busy and important for me to trouble his pretty little head with trivia like that.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 07/08/2018 17:05

The wouldn’t let you buy a door without your husbands permission?

Is this kind of discrimination even legal? Confused

chemenger · 07/08/2018 17:06

North west plant, backing on to a river. No monthly reports (is that P&G, if so I was with the other lot). No ladies toilets is true though. We’re you in Grangemouth?

@SoyDora

Good for you but what's your point?

We also discuss car purchases despite very much having a car for him and a car for me. The budget is quite a minimal aspect; especially for something like a door where the variation in pricing is a massive percentage. The most expensive was 4x the price of the cheapest and we needed to discuss why.

chemenger · 07/08/2018 17:07

It wasn’t Safestyle, it was what used to be a local company but seems to have grown big and clumsy.

Fairypiggy · 07/08/2018 17:09

I had this recently with Anglian. As other posters have said is a pressure selling technique.

NicoAndTheNiners · 07/08/2018 17:09

Thanks for the company recommendation. Just looked at their website and think I will get my new door from them. Good range and if I don’t need dh’s Approval even better.

parklives · 07/08/2018 17:09

I'm fucked if I ever need a new door, no husband here.
I could ask the cat/dog but they are female too.
I am doomed!

Bluelady · 07/08/2018 17:10

This has happened every time I've bought a car. The salesman insists on talking to the one with a penis. He walks away and leaves me to it while he goes and plays with all the new cars now.
