To think it should be an actual criminal offence to get two adults to share a double bed?

Fuck me a double bed is so fucking small for two adults! A child in a single bed gets more space.

Have spent a hideous night at DM’s in a tiny double but my MIL and grandmother is the same - all have double beds. I’ve been elbowed in the back a number of times and feel like I could fall off the bed at any time. Obviously all these beds have super soft mattresses so you either feel like you’ll fall off the edge or there is some droopy magnetic force pulling you both in to the middle.

How does anyone sleep with their DP in a double? I miss my big bed so much!

I'd love the biggest bed i could have - bgger the better - but hate the thought of wrestling with a super douper emperor duvet cover Grin

woodhill · 04/08/2018 09:23

I thought Queen was 5' then King 6' but I always buy Kingssize duvet covers.

Think terminology may have changed

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 09:25

We have a double and it’s too bloody small. Horrible. I can’t sleep comfortably at all.

RollaCola84 · 04/08/2018 09:26

Was it a proper double or a small double ? DP and I had a small double in a hotel once and it was one of the worst night's sleep we've ever had. I'm fairly tall but neither of us are "big" and we couldn't even lie flat without elbows being in each other's sides.

DP is now spoilt by our newish king size bed and insists on checking any potential hotel / holiday lets for bed size.

Maelstrop · 04/08/2018 09:27

I’m dreading visiting my parents in two weeks. Their old double is my old room, it’s ancient, tiny, we’re both heading for 6ft. It’s soft and crap.

cloudyweewee · 04/08/2018 09:27

That;s why DH and I have separate rooms. He has a double and I have a single bed as I prefer that. Last week when we were on holiday, we had to share a bed and it wasn't too bad but I couldn't go back to sharing a double permanently.

Noboozeforme · 04/08/2018 09:29

YADNBU

I have a super king. I'm single Grin. I love bed.

Jules439 · 04/08/2018 09:32

This posts resonates massively as we are just packing to go to pils where they have a double bed and I’m dreading it. Have tried to convince DH to just go for the day, but mil has planned two days worth of activities. He is 6,5 and I’m 5,8 (but not thin 😳). I know I’ll be awake all night. Love our super king so much, but it does make going away difficult. We also check bed size (often difficult to tell in cottages) before we go away. Glad to see we are not the only ones.

Gojira · 04/08/2018 09:33

We have a super king too.

I can't bare sleeping in a normal double. I hate being squashed up against the other person, with no escape!

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/08/2018 09:34

I think that some people use Queen to refer to a standard double (4.5 foot). Though the terminology differs country to country. (think USA the terms refer to the size bigger than UK. Need to double check that though).

There's a load of sizes, all seem to vary by half a foot. So a 'small double' is 4 foot and a 'large single' 3.5 foot.

nicebitofquiche · 04/08/2018 09:34

I sleep in a double bed with my OH. Not a problem. Are you both fat? We are and it's still not a problem.

Kismett · 04/08/2018 09:35

We sleep in a double with no trouble at all. I used to have an American King before, and I don’t mind that either. It’s all about the same to me!

Iwantaunicorn · 04/08/2018 09:37

Super king is the way forwards. I love my dh, but can’t stand having him in my personal sleeping space. I need space to move, hate being breathed on and not being able to get comfy. We do have 2 dogs who sleep in with us and they take up a lot of room, so when we go away a king size is survivable as it’s just the two of us!

Iwantaunicorn · 04/08/2018 09:38

Sorry posted too soon, YADNBU!

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 09:39

We aren’t even big. Both DP and I are around 5”7 and both of us weigh about 9 and a half stone! We’re just selfish sleepers. I hate being touched in the night unless it’s literally freezing and DP thrashes around like he’s fighting a troll.

We hate having a double bed.

BertieBotts · 04/08/2018 09:40

Queen is a US size so doesn't have a standard measurement in the UK.

I think we have a superking - we are in EU so cm sizes and our bed is 180x200. It's fantastic - felt enormous when we first got it. It gives me enough space to spread out with pregnancy pillows, we don't fight over the duvet. And when LO arrives we'll have plenty of space to co sleep.

SoyDora · 04/08/2018 09:42

Are you both fat?

We’re both slim. Would still rather have more space though.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/08/2018 09:43

I can't remember how I managed hugely pregnant with twins and then co sleeping (only one, the other hated it) in a double. Sometimes think a King is too small these days.

chachaboom · 04/08/2018 09:43

Went from a double to a super king base with 2 single mattresses on. Joy. Single sheet sets easier to wash/dry, you can put one super king sheet over the two mattresses if the 'gap' bothers you. One duvet on top. Granted there's hardly any space around the room now but the space inside the bed is where it's at.

itssquidstella · 04/08/2018 09:43

DP and I have a king size with a separate duvet each. We're both light sleepers and like to sprawl out; DP is also a very hot person so physical contact while sleeping is a no-no! We're both big - I'm 5'11" and he's six foot and stacked.

We hate having to share a double because neither of us sleeps well at all. I was nearly in tears from exhaustion last time we spent more than a couple of nights at his mum's.

All hotels should provide either a king size or two large singles pushed together.

chachaboom · 04/08/2018 09:44

Oh and were normal height slim build.

SluttyButty · 04/08/2018 09:45

Truth! My kids have double beds to themselves. We have a king size and I'm wavering at getting a super king instead. I love space and I'd have to kill my husband if we ever had to share a double again Grin

ChimesAtMidnight · 04/08/2018 09:54

I’m wondering also if this is a generational thing cos my parents / grandparents are all fine with doubles. Plus some posters here say they’ve shared for 20+ years with no problems.
Nope - been married 46 years and for at least 30 of those we’ve had a super king bed.
And it’s the only thing I ask when booking overnight stays and holidays.

Snog · 04/08/2018 09:56

It took me 15 years that upgrade from double to super king.

I think a superking is the most important purchase for any pregnant woman and if I could go back in time I would have made myself buy one at that point in my life.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 04/08/2018 09:56

We have a double that ds also cosleeps in. No problems.
