To think it should be an actual criminal offence to get two adults to share a double bed?

Fuck me a double bed is so fucking small for two adults! A child in a single bed gets more space.

Have spent a hideous night at DM’s in a tiny double but my MIL and grandmother is the same - all have double beds. I’ve been elbowed in the back a number of times and feel like I could fall off the bed at any time. Obviously all these beds have super soft mattresses so you either feel like you’ll fall off the edge or there is some droopy magnetic force pulling you both in to the middle.

How does anyone sleep with their DP in a double? I miss my big bed so much!

I'm in my 30s and happy in a double. I will admit that DH moved into the spare room when I was about 36 weeks pregnant because I needed more space than I could have sharing, though!

ShirleyPhallus · 04/08/2018 09:05

Sofa bed ‘doubles’ are worse.

Oh god yes yes absolutely!

Holidayed in a delightful off-grid cottage in January - because of lack of heating, we spent the week sharing a 2ft 6 single; apart from having to synchronise rolling over, we both slept well.

RandomUsernameHere · 04/08/2018 09:07

Completely agree OP 😂
King size is the minimum we would be comfortable in.

dworky · 04/08/2018 09:07

It's not necessarily the size but type of sleepers. Some toss & turn and/or sleep sprawled out.
If you both sleep soundly and curled up, all is fine. Otherwise OP is correct, a double is too small for two.

FASH84 · 04/08/2018 09:08

I love our super king, I'm 5'8 10-12 and DH is 6'4 and slim so I think it's about height as much as weight , DH can't even lay straight in a double if it has a foot end

jarhead123 · 04/08/2018 09:08

YANBU! Having had a king size for a few years I don't know how we coped with a double

scaryteacher · 04/08/2018 09:09

We have shared a double for over 32 years. A larger bed is nice when away, but I would have to buy all new bedding, from mattress toppers to duvets to sheets, duvet covers etc, plus a new bed if we upsized and that would be a small fortune.

Mentounasc · 04/08/2018 09:10

Where I live we have actual centimeter sizes rather than double, king size etc. how big is a double in cm then? When we were younger we had 140cm, that might be a double, right? We found it too narrow when the dc were small and wanted family hugs, so went over to a 160 cm as a single mattress. That's the largest single mattress you can get here - for 180 cm beds you have to get two single mattresses here and we hate that dividing line, which inevitably turns into a gap in hotel rooms. We do have two single duvets to avoid duvet theft, though.
Would 180cm be king size or super king?

ShirleyPhallus · 04/08/2018 09:11

how big is a double in cm then?

Judging by last night’s sleep I’m going to guess 54cm

*I will also admit that I like to sleep on my front with one knee up so there’s nowhere for that knee to go in a double

And I HATE being touched in bed. Nice cuddles before sleep but cannot sleep with someone touching me*

I'm the same, DH is also 6' 2" ish and snores like a wild boar.

For these reasons we have separate bedrooms and have had for about 12 years, he has a single and I have a king size and I swear it's the key to a happy marriage GrinGrin

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/08/2018 09:13

Does your DP get a decent night's sleep in a double OP? I think standard doubles are fine if neither partner is a 'selfish sleeper', or both are fine with being touched during sleep.

I dream of 6ft bed (have a 5ft, which is good enough, but that extra foot would be heaven). I just don't like having another body near me when sleeping. I like to turn without coming into contact with another body too.

I want the option of having my own space.

We moved and bought a king size and actually I hate how far away he is.
Couldn't you just move closer to him? Unless he prefers the distance of course. (Ha, that makes it sound like you need binoculars to see each other and telegraph to communicate in a king sized bed.) See options!

Must admit though I regularly curse the crazy tradition of couples sharing a bed. Usually when I'd wondering how to off the husband as he sleeps and snores and I don't sleep and plot.

Scarlett and Rhett had it right. Well the sleeping arrangements anyway.

Jozxyqk · 04/08/2018 09:14

I feel your pain. DH is a large, broad shouldered 6'4" with painful knees. (I'm 5'2" & usually end up balancing on my edge) & we have to share a double. Our bedroom will not physically accommodate a larger bed... plus, he snores like a speedboat engine. And thrashes about. We have vowed that if we can ever afford to buy a house, a larger bedroom for us will be a priority as we're both mobility impaired & having a small bed is really crap. We had a king size on holiday & it was bliss...

Asdf12345 · 04/08/2018 09:15

No problem with two six foot people in a standard double here.

FASH84 · 04/08/2018 09:15

@Mentounasc our super king is 200cm x 200cm , one mattress (was a bit of a job to get it up the stairs...)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2018 09:17

Oh, yes - though when I was younger and slept much better it wasn't a problem. Our bed is between king and superking - special size Vi Spring in a sale aeons ago, though have changed the mattress since. Bit of a pain having to get fitted sheets made, but just use a SK duvet.

Pet peeve is holiday lets where there's plenty of room for a king size but owners are too tight to provide one. Can't stay anywhere without a king size now - that is if I want to sleep. Our guest room has a king size - we like our guests to be comfortable.

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/08/2018 09:18

@Mentounasc
"A standard double bed is 4 feet 6 inches wide and 6 feet 3 inches long (137 x 190 cm). This is the most common and widely available size for all bed types in the UK. A standard king size bed is 5 feet wide and 6 feet 6 inches long (150 x 198 cm)."

I find bedding that gives its measures in cm confusing (IKEA I'm looking at you), don't the know beds are built in feet and inches because that's how we grow to.

All the new fangled measuring, interfering with our heights.

SporkInTheToaster · 04/08/2018 09:18

In the UK

Occasional Double is 4ft wide (who the fk thought that was a good idea?) - 120cm
Double is 4ft 6in wide - 135cm
King is 5ft wide - 150cm
Superking is 6ft wide - 180cm
Emperor is 6ft 6in wide - 198cm

woodhill · 04/08/2018 09:19

Queen bed or 5' here. Would love a Kingsize but too big for our room.

I could never go back to a double and would always try to book rooms with bigger beds on holiday

Donthugmeimscared · 04/08/2018 09:19

I have always had a double with my ex which was fine until he grew to 28 stone. We have been apart for a year and i still sleep on the very edge of the double. one day i will learn to spread out i'm sure.

Laiste · 04/08/2018 09:21

So what's a 'Queen' then?

We're King here. For years. Double feels ridiculous now.

Rottweilers1 · 04/08/2018 09:22

I love sharing a double.
It’s an intimacy thing and knowing you’re not to far away.
Then again I’m a clingy bitch to put it bluntly who hates sleeping on her own so knowing I can feel my partner is super close to me makes me sleep so much better.

Roomba · 04/08/2018 09:22

I shared a double with my ex for many years without any real issue. We did have to make sure bed frames didn't have a footboard though, as he is 6'6". In beds with a footboard, he'd have to sleep diagonally across me - then we would fall out big time!

Hell, when we first got together, we shared a single bed between us for three years! Now that is a bit tight for two adults, but we were so loved up we didn't care. No idea why I have a bad back in my middle age...

NordicNobody · 04/08/2018 09:22

I feel your pain. I'm 7 months pregnant, and share our double bed with DP and 2 year old DS. Feel like I'm dying of heat every night ATM 😖

slkk · 04/08/2018 09:23

We were absolutely fine in a double until we got a new big bed. Now we struggle when staying in a double at other houses.
