I had a recent thread running about having an abscess in my lip. Unfortunately I think it is going to scar.

It got me thinking about scars and the stories behind them.

I have a scar running across my arse cheek from sitting on my hair straighteners as a teen. That was fun when it went all scabby and stuck to my school tights. I have a small scar on my finger from slicing straight through a bagel, and a fag burn scar on my hand from my drunk friend (again as a teen). I also have the obligatory pregnancy stretch marks that still resemble a british road map 6 years on Blush

So, what scars do you have and what are the stories behind them?

I have a scar on my knee from leapfrogging a bollard with a medium length skirt on. I have a c section scar. I have a few piercing scars, including on on my hand. (I was a weird teen.) I have a chicken pox scar on my forehead.

cadburyegg · 03/08/2018 22:53

Self harming scars on my arms (not visible to anyone but me), scars behind my knees from surgery, a dodgy episiotomy scar that healed funny, stretch marks from pregnancy.

hazeyjane · 03/08/2018 22:56

One on my chest where a piece of melted plastic from a straw welded itself to me

Acne scars, and scars from eczema on my face and neck

One coming out of my belly button from a laparoscopy

A C-section scar, big and wonky where it opened up and got infected

A big patch of darker skin on my arm from a burn that became infected

Lots of scars in my uterus which is a wreck from a C-section, 2 erpcs and the removal of a tumour.

ALemonyPea · 03/08/2018 22:58

One on chin where I burst it open falling on a stone floor when I was 4 and needed 4 stitches

A few on my neck getting moles removed

One on my arm from the implant

Three on my stomach from hysterectomy

C section scar, I’ve had 3 sections but they used same site each time

Large scar on my calf and back of knee from dog attack

hazeyjane · 03/08/2018 22:59

Oh yes, i forgot about episiotomy scar plus 3rd degree tear scar and 2nd degree tear running the other way!

4yearsnosleep · 03/08/2018 22:59

Wow @Brigante9 that's impressive! I remember seeing a woman on Air A&E where a horse kicked her whilst cantering. I'd didn't look too bad until they took her boot off and it fell open. Madness!

PippilottaLongstocking · 03/08/2018 23:00

This will be very outing if any of my family read this but oh well!
Working from my head down, leaving hands til last because they’re the worst

  • one through my eyebrow where I fell and caught it on a bench when I was tiny
  • a few on my chest where I’ve been scratched by babies whilst breastfeeding
  • various little round chickenpox scars
  • a patch on my lower back where I fell backwards off a swing
  • stretch marks from my last pregnancy
  • a lot of small ones on my knees from falling over as a child
  • a big round one on my leg from an infected insect bite when I was small
  • quite a big one on my ankle from the days when I bothered shaving
  • a couple on the back of my hand from odd skin infections
  • one on my thumb from an oven burn
  • one on the web between two fingers where I accidentally cut it with scissors
  • One on a knuckle where I accidentally punched the metal part of a hoover trying to slot the hose together
  • one right down my thumb where I slipped whilst crushing a tin
  • one on the side of a finger where I slipped whilst cutting through a piece of felt with a penknife

(Also a selection of small unexplained ones because I am clumsy and grew up semi-feral in the countryside)

saturdaynightgin · 03/08/2018 23:06

I have quite a few..

Back of my leg, just above the knee, where I was bitten by a dog at about 12; on my left shin from standing through a pane of glass aged 3; on my right shin from slipping and hitting it on the corner of a metal cabinet in PE changing rooms aged 13; a criss cross on my elbow from being hit by fry basket that had just come out of the vat when I working in Mcds during uni; several on my fingers from having warts frozen off; and one on my chest which I have no explanation for!

Purplefrogshoes · 03/08/2018 23:06

C section scars, waist to thigh and butt cheek scars from numerous hip operations and a Harry Potter like scar on my forehead but mine was caused by going down stairs on my bike when I was 7 not by Voldemort Grin

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 03/08/2018 23:55

I have this beast on my index finger as I was bitten by a neighbour's pet rat about 18 years ago. I spent 3 days in hospital having plastic surgery to repair the nerve that it bit through.

My scar is frigging awesome!
A good 12 inches running up my spine from lower back.
I had a car crash, got out of the car, tried to pull my son from the rear seat and collapsed on the floor. Then paralysed for 6 days. Until they operated and fused my spine back together with bone, metal and screws.
I had 3 fractures, one literally snapped my vertabrae in half and how I never damaged my spinal cord is still a mystery.
Fully able bodied and still very flexible - feel super lucky and thankful for my scar.
If my spine hadn’t snapped, it would have been my neck and they said I wouldn’t have been so lucky

OneStepOneStumble · 04/08/2018 00:09

I scar so easily!
I've a purple scar on one knee from falling off a pavement whilst admiring a cat at age 6 🙄
Scar on the other knee from scraping along concrete having fallen off my bike trying to impress my cousins age 8.
White line across the front of both legs from falling over a stage I couldn't see low down when drunk 😐
Massive scratch scars down my shins from falling down an escalator running from some very creepy men in a station late at night alone (had been drinking but think I would have fallen in panic anyway).
Numerous scratch scars up my arms from netball (please ladies cut your nails and take rings off before playing sports 😢)

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 04/08/2018 00:20

Most recent is 8 inch scar on left hip from hip replacement 3 months ago.
2 c section scars 11 years apart, most recent is about a year old.
10 across my trunk, 6 were for gastric sleeve the other 4 were gallbladder removal.
That's the last 3 years covered.
Scar on left shoulder from running past Yale lock and shredded my skin.
42 cuts on left arm from 15 years self harm, plus 4 cigarette burns, same reason.
Final one, from when I was 10 is a 2 inch scar on hand where I intervened in a cat fight to try to protect my cat. 33 years ago and still there.
I sound like Frankenstein's monster, but not that bad really BlushHmm

YouBetterWORK · 04/08/2018 00:34

One small one under my chin where I fell off a wall near our house. Years later my brother did the same thing so we have matching scars! Then my laproscopy scars, still there after a year and a half later but I don't mind, the procedure cleared my endo which most likely lead to being able to conceive DD Smile

I've also got a head chicken pox scar, although it's more of a tiny dent!

Sweetpea15 · 04/08/2018 00:35

I have one on my wrist from a wrist fusion.
One on my foot from a broken plate - I stood on a shard I didn’t notice when cleaning it up.
One on my leg from slipping on a climbing frame and rusty paint going in my leg.
One by eyelid from waking into a cigarette when I was a toddler.
One on forehead from slipping from the sink and catching myself - again as a toddler.
One on my wrist from a cat scratch.
One on my finger from a ring cutting me.
One on my boob from a guy trying to unzip my jumper with his teeth but catching my skin instead.

GeezAJammyPeece · 04/08/2018 00:54

Where to begin ... Blush

Many scars, none for anything particularly serious.

• Cyst removals on scalp 25 years ago mean I have small patches where my hair grows really weirdly through the scar tissue
• Chicken pox hole about eyebrow, 37 years ago
• small thin scar between nose and lip (practicing shaving like my dad , approx 35 years ago)
• small scar on neck from skin tag removal
• countless burns from oven shelves/hot plates/trays from home & work
• tiny white bubbly scars inside wrist from a bad lentil soup accident about 5 or 6 years ago - it was a mess and I am amazed that the only visible scarring left is where the Mepitel dressing didn't stay in place properly.
• Other scars on the insides of both arms from a gravy accident 9 months ago. That time i wasn't so lucky, the scars will never go from that.
• Appendectomy scar. Pretty ugly as it opened up, got infected, and was in a bit of a mess.
• Small incision at navel where they put a camera in.
• I assume a small scar at location of location of tear/episiotomy, but never look to see
• Colposcopy scarring is definitely there as medical professionals take great delight in telling me - haven't seen this since the doc showed me via a big screen as he was performing it Hmm
• Small round divet out of shin where I knocked it against the corner of the bed. (That bed is ALWAYS jumping out at us, that's the only time it left a scar)

Think that's it.

GeezAJammyPeece · 04/08/2018 00:54

However; family, friends & work colleagues will recognise at least some of those, so I've probably just outed myself. Shock

DuchessAnnogovia · 04/08/2018 05:35

Surgical scars on my left ankle where I had to have broken ankle pinned together

Scars on my right thumb where I burnt it with an iron.

Long 12Inch scar on left leg have been told I cut myself on a farming instrument when approx 10yrs old xx

Geekynzmum · 04/08/2018 07:34

I've got quite a few scars myself, along with the obligatory stretch marks on my tummy and boobs unfortunately.
I've got:
A C-section scar
1 on my back from having a mole removed.
1 on my thumb where I was slicing some roast lamb and the knife slipped
1 next to my belly button from chicken pox.
1 above my knee where my sister burned me with a car cigarette lighter.
1 on my knee where I slipped on gravel while playing rugby on concrete as a child.
1 on my foot from running barefoot through long grass and cutting it on a broken beer bottle (got stitches for that one)
1 on my elbow from slipping in the shower and hitting it on a glass bottle that had been left in there. Ironically I'd seen the bottle in the shower and thought "I should probably move that" but didn't bother.
Got lots of other little scars but those are the most interesting.

ToffeePennie · 04/08/2018 07:39

I have one that runs the length of my chest. I had experimental heart surgery. Really I should be dead by now.
I also have a scar running the length of my middle finger left hand. Managed to spill boiling sugar down my finger and it nearly stripped it.
I have a scar in the crook of my left elbow. I had a potentially cancerous mole removed. The crook of my right elbow is covered in masses of scars from eczema.
There’s a scar on my knee from when I fell over in year seven.
And there’s a giant scar on my ear where a piercing ripped.

Geekynzmum · 04/08/2018 07:45

Oh, and I've got an impressive birth mark on my leg that looks like a hand print. DM always told me it was where the midwife picked me up by my leg when I was born. Not sure if that's true or not, but makes for an interesting story.

CMOTDibbler · 04/08/2018 07:51

Lots of little ones as I scar badly. But my good ones are on my left arm - 6" nasty wide one right through the crook of my arm (it was purple, but treatment took the colour out) - particularly annoying as that surgery totally failed. 5" long one with stitch mark scars across my wrist to knuckles (wrist reconstruction and then fusion later through the same one). Three 1" scars (with stitch mark scars) from an external fixator. Small scars from fixation wires. 3" on inside of wrist from nerve decompression.
Its a bit of a mess!

ProfYaffle · 04/08/2018 07:52

Me: C-section scars x 2, where my contraceptive implant was removed, that one still feels pinchy and odd.

Dh: Craniotomy scars x 2 across his forehead. Weirdly not as noticeable as it sounds.

Dd2: Large abdominal scar after surgery last year.

notsmartenough · 04/08/2018 08:11

Hysterectomy scar, vertical but veers off a couple of inches to avoid my belly button. I thought nothing of it but nurse taking out staples thought it was odd.
Scar above belly button from failed keyhole surgery (2 other scars now faded).
Nine inch scar but very neat from gall bladder removal.
Just one scar from childhood, on my leg and very faded now. I was at a swimming pool and someone threw a wire basket from a balcony.

ScarsAndAll · 04/08/2018 09:19

Nc for this as its quite outing!! I have a lot of scars from a big operation for mouth cancer 8 years ago. I have a large 8inch scar on my thigh where they removed some muscle to rebuild my tongue, as well as a scar that runs from my lip, down my chin, under my face and round to my ear. Honestly, I love them! I'm lucky that they are incredibly neat, done by an amazing surgeon. They tell the tale of how I survived something horrific and are part of what makes me who I am!!
