Shouted at for covering up my kids at the beach....

Just that really. On holiday in Greece, currently by the beach, sunny about 35 deegrees and my kids wearing UV tops and I'm shouted abuse by locals here for covering them up as they should be enjoying the sun!
I've been asked if they are scuba divers, if they have cancer, if they are autistic....and at the end I was told I am a horrible mother and they are all sorry for them!
WTAF?

"Mind you own business you nosey cunt" seems like an adequate reply

Better than surnburn.

mintich · 02/08/2018 12:12

Seems really odd! Most Mediterranean countries are so vigilant about sun care

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 02/08/2018 12:12

Really?

c3pu · 02/08/2018 12:12

Clearly public health education is lacking! Sure the sun is enjoyable, but that doesn't mean it's good for you...

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:13

Tartsamazeballs what do you mean? Yes it did happen, the verbal crap was mostly by the elderly, but we are getting the look from everyone here, we are the only ones with UV top

OP posts:
FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 02/08/2018 12:14

yeh I seriously doubt that happened.
the average local in Greece doesn't give a fuck what tourist kids wear on the beach, as long as their parents are spending money.

NoelHeadbands · 02/08/2018 12:14

Wow unbelievable.

Literally.

HoppingPavlova · 02/08/2018 12:14

Ignore. I always had kids in long sleeve UV tops. DH and I always wear long sleeve UV tops. Now kids are older they still choose to wear them.

We live in a country with extreme UV and it assists in stopping skin cancer. It’s plain common sense and if other people don’t have any then fuck them.

Nope we are the only ones covered
Beach is full of kids!

I holiday in Greece/Greek Islands on August each year and never had that. How odd! I've only known the locals to be very on top of sun safety. I wouldn't let it bother you, you know you are doing right

Where are you in Greece?

Ragwort · 02/08/2018 12:16

Just ignore, you are on holiday, enjoying the sunshine - why do you care what other people think?

If you feel you need to engage just smile and nod - get back to your sunbathing, book, playing with your children, whatever you like doing.

It really doesn't matter what other people think or how they look at you. Have confidence in your own parenting decisions.

blueskiesandforests · 02/08/2018 12:18

There are elderly Greek people shouting at you on the beach and asking you whether your children are autistic or scuba divers in English ?

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:18

We re a bit outside Athens, place called Lagonisi, it's all locals not tourists at all. I assume that's the reason they are not used to this

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:19

blueskiesandforests nope all in Greek, we re staying with a Greek family in a very non touristy place

blueskiesandforests · 02/08/2018 12:20

No non Greek tourists but fantastic English vocabulary among the elderly population...

Yes, I'm amazed that their English is so good that they know the word 'autistic'. Or is OP's Greek so good that she knows its Greek equivalent? Hmm

blueskiesandforests · 02/08/2018 12:22

Sorry, cross posted. You speak fluent Greek and are guests of a local family. What do your friends think about the tendency of the local pensioners to shout at people on the beach?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 02/08/2018 12:22

Ah the Greek family are translating for you. Are you sure that is what the locals are saying, seems very very odd.

LimeIce · 02/08/2018 12:22

I'm sure you get nutty/anti social people in any country and it looks like you've bumped into a group of them
