Shouted at for covering up my kids at the beach....

Just that really. On holiday in Greece, currently by the beach, sunny about 35 deegrees and my kids wearing UV tops and I'm shouted abuse by locals here for covering them up as they should be enjoying the sun!
I've been asked if they are scuba divers, if they have cancer, if they are autistic....and at the end I was told I am a horrible mother and they are all sorry for them!
WTAF?

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:23

itsBritneyBeach · 02/08/2018 12:24

Obviously! Grin

abilockhart · 02/08/2018 12:24

Yeah, right.

Ragwort · 02/08/2018 12:24

Why are your 'friends' bothering to translate unpleasant comments to you? Confused.

Just ignore.

Butterflykissess · 02/08/2018 12:25
Hmm
LimeIce · 02/08/2018 12:26

They sound like the sort of people who appear on the tv programme "Neighbours from hell" People like that must exist in all countries

DonutCone · 02/08/2018 12:26

Oh for goodness sake. I really doubt many Greek pensioners give a shit what your children are wearing.

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:27

Ragwort its cause I saw an elder lady shouting at us first and hadn't realised why
I can't ignore to be honest I'm quite upset!

OP posts:
HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:28

Yeap they're sitting there giving a fuck about everything!

Ask your friend to stop translating. And accept they think you're weird - by their standards you are. At least you're on holiday and can go home - I am constantly criticed in the UK because my olive skinned children tan and because they don't spend their whole time slathered in factor 50 in UV suits (they do wear UV rash vests).

se22mother · 02/08/2018 12:28

we were in Greece 2 weeks ago. UV tops were the norm for children in the pool

cookiesandchocolate · 02/08/2018 12:28

What's the Greek for autistic

BarbarianMum · 02/08/2018 12:28

criticized

witchofzog · 02/08/2018 12:29

Why are people so rude on here? Would you do this in real life? Somehow I doubt it. If people were shouting at me in Greek I would ask for a translation too.

Op- ignore the ignorance on the beach. You are keeping your kids safe and that makes you a good parent. You will never see them again so sod what they think

stickygotstuck · 02/08/2018 12:29

OP, might the issue here be the interpretation you are making of the word "to shout"?

Generally speaking, Mediterranean people speak louder and more expressively. They are probably telling you animatedly (i.e. clearly without beating about the bush) that they think DC's sun protection is a bit over the top for what they are used to. Not berating you for it. Which seems to be how you are taking it.

Cultural differences and all that...

My British family members thik my Mediterranean family members are arguing when they are having a perfectly normal (and animated) conversation about the state of the economy, or whatever.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 02/08/2018 12:30

Maybe the Greek family you are staying with really don't like you and are making up what the pensioners are saying? Grin
We've been to Greece loads of times and the people there usually dote on the kids not say things like do they have cancer.

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:30

se22mother which part were you at
We are not in a hotel, not a single tourist here all locals

DuchessAnnogovia · 02/08/2018 12:31

I'd get your friend to teach you to say 'fuck off you nosey twats' in Greek. Love your response @BubblesInTheTub

I know it's easy to say 'don't let it upset you' but try and put it into perspective - no one has died, no one is ill, you are lucky enough to be holidaying in Greece with your family and friends; the only thing that has happened is that someone is questioning your parenting ability - if you are confident in the decision you have made then it really, really doesn't matter what someone else thinks.

As a parent you will always get judged on your parenting skills - still happening to me with a teenager Grin.

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:31

witchofzog thank you

DBN1 · 02/08/2018 12:32

Hmm, I don't know. It's all Greek to me.....

busyboysmum · 02/08/2018 12:32

MN pile on OP....

Ignore the old Greeks - they're probably only in their 40s but years of sun abuse is making them look like they're pensioners!

Wink
HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:34

Ragwort thanks! It's their shouting that got to me, as another pp said it might be a culture thing

DuchessAnnogovia I can tell them to fuck off in Greek, it's their age (and my husband) that stopped me!
