Shouted at for covering up my kids at the beach....

Just that really. On holiday in Greece, currently by the beach, sunny about 35 deegrees and my kids wearing UV tops and I'm shouted abuse by locals here for covering them up as they should be enjoying the sun!
I've been asked if they are scuba divers, if they have cancer, if they are autistic....and at the end I was told I am a horrible mother and they are all sorry for them!
WTAF?

Cultural differences. Try to ignore it.

specialsubject · 02/08/2018 12:35

village idiot day out? No doubt you get stupid and rude Greeks just as you get in any other nation.

many on MN have never heard of rash vests and think suncream is magical stuff that won't wash off, so it can be a British problem too. Temperature of course irrelevant - latitude, time of year, time of day, altitude, reflection all matter.

if the kids are out in the sun in the med then of course they should be covered. Ignore stupidity.

OuchLegoHurts · 02/08/2018 12:36

Well either you ignore them or you take off the UV suits...

Marylou2 · 02/08/2018 12:36

You’re behaving in a responsible way. Protecting your children’s skin from damage and skin cancer. Most British kids wear SPF tops on holiday. Perhaps also your children have pale British skin like mine do, not lovely Greek olive skin. Ignore these odd people. Have to say I’ve never encountered anything other than loveliness in Greece.

ShumpaLumpa · 02/08/2018 12:36

Do they think you're covering for religious reasons, OP?

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 02/08/2018 12:37

I think your friends are pulling your leg Grin

RideOn · 02/08/2018 12:40

Just ignore, but I must say sounds strange, never had so much as an extra glance at mine in UV tops anywhere in southern Europe (not been to Greece) but it is probably clear by their palest white freckly skin that they have to have some protection.

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 12:40

They knows it's not religious reasons, I'm not covered at all 😊
It was genuine abuse and i have to say it was from elder ones only
But have to say absolutely no other kid is covered here and my kids did get the look for what they're wearing
We've been in other places outside Europe never had this before!

Why are so many here doubting the OP? It just seems unlikely that she would make such a random thing up!

Sunnybeachbabe · 02/08/2018 12:41

Mmmm hmmm? And then did they set their pet unicorns on you? Grin

LimeIce · 02/08/2018 12:45

Mammalamb I think people are thinking "Well the Greeks I've met weren't like that, so there must be no offensive Greek people"

arethereanyleftatall · 02/08/2018 12:51

I think people are doubting the op @Mammalamb because can you honestly picture a person getting shouted at by strangers and called a terrible mother because their child has sun protection? Seriously?
One would assume, that the op popped in 'autism' and rubbed her hands in glee that a bum fight would ensue.

@Mammalamb

I think my disbelief comes from this being a regular type of thread (and a pet hate)
Basically a parent selects an aspect of their parenting that they feel they do well and want praise for. Regular bed time, eating a variety of foods, helping around the house at a young age. Then they create a thread where somebody else (MIL often) has criticised it.
"MIL told me off because I read bedtime stories to my toddler AIBU"

Cue Mumsnet tears reassuring them that they are a great parent and doing really well and that the person criticising them is a numpty.

Unfortunately MIL threads are believable, this? Not so much!

CherryPlum · 02/08/2018 12:56

They are bonkers, can't you just ignore them? How odd

HolidayHate · 02/08/2018 13:06

Sunnybeachbabe nothing like that here. It's an honest post. I don't give a fuck being criticised as long as someone speaks calmly without using statements about my kids being ill .
Thanks for all who advised to ignore, im now ignoring. I wouldn't even mind the looks, I appreciate it's a locals place with different habits, where all kids have a tan! My anger started from those pensions shouting at us. Other than that I appreciate cultures are different, I have no issue with that . I think the poster about village idiots nailed it, I have an unlucky day!

WTAF indeed...

Tinkobell · 02/08/2018 13:34

Do Greek pensioners believe that autistic kids require more sun protection than others? 😁

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/08/2018 13:35

What’s Greek for “bugger off and mind your own business”? This is what google translate gave me:
ξεκλειδώστε και σκεφτείτε τη δική σας επιχείρηση!

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2018 13:35

I cannot imagine elderly Greek people doing this.

Sorry - just checking I've got this right. Local elderly Greek people are actually shouting abuse at you about what your children are wearing in the sun? They have asked if they are autistic or have cancer?

And your friendly Greek family have translated all this for you?

Sorry OP. This is so, so far removed from what is usual in small Greek villages, or many other slightly comparable places that I'm struggling a bit to be honest. Your posts indicate that lots of people have been doing this, not even just one or two?

Very, very, very unlucky, then, I guess, is the only possible conclusion.

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2018 13:38

But everyone on Mumsnet knows how truly awful old people are, and that it is complete open season on them......

Melliegrantfirstlady · 02/08/2018 13:38

Hopefully MN will check your IP address is in Greece at the moment

I’ve been many times and I’ve never came across this!!!

Where about in Greece are you? Which beach

LockedOutOfMN · 02/08/2018 13:39

Here in Spain the locals would be telling you (in a well meaning but probably forceful way) to stay in the shade and put on sunscreen! They think people who go out in the sun (not the shade) are insane and also think all pale skinned people will frazzle as soon as the sun touches them (which is more or less true).

LockedOutOfMN · 02/08/2018 13:40

Obviously, ignore the comments and protect your children from the sun as you see fit.
