Condoms in online grocery ‘favourites’ - AIBU to think DP is cheating?

ParanoidOrSunburnt · 01/08/2018 21:25

I’ve just done our online shop and while browsing ‘favourites’ there was a Durex multipack!m on the list! I recognise all the other products in the favourites list apart from one type of men’s deodorant.

Both were ‘sponsored’ items so maybe I’m being paranoid?! But condoms are an unusual item to try and sell us as we - or should that be I?! - haven’t bought any for a few years!!!

AIBU to think that DP is blatantly cheating?!

There's an interesting article about how supermarkets target customers based on their purchases in the New York Times.

IThinkIMadeYouUpInsideMyHead · 02/08/2018 08:53

Maybe Durex are sponsoring ads because they issued a recall notice the other day? Maybe your DP read that article, and you're now being targeted because of clickstream data?

@0range99 Thanks! That’s great to see :-)

I feel much better today - thanks everyone for your helpful comments x

(a better night’s sleep helped too!)

Ps: to the person who said I must be hard work... if I was THAT hard work surely I would’ve flown off the handle and confronted DP immediately (as some people advised) rather than double-check Tesco’s marketing tactics via mumsnet? Anyway, you don’t know me or my situation.

Thanks everyone :-)

Your DH has got to be thicker than pig shit to be swiping the family club card when buying condoms to use with his side piece

Beeziekn33ze · 02/08/2018 14:16

IThink IMadeYou - I heard something about how we are increasingly affected by algorithms on R4 recently. I'll check out the New Yorker piece.
This thread is just one example of why we shouldn't roll over and let electronic data companies interfere in our lives. 'The computer says 'NO'' is no longer a joke.
OP I hope Tesco realise that their thirst for profit can harm real people, you shouldn't have had to cope with this.

ConkerGame · 02/08/2018 14:25

For those of you saying “they’re just adverts”, I’m afraid you’re being very naive. Adverts are almost ALL targeted ads these days - I.e. an algorithm decides which advert to show you depending on what you have previously clicked on/bought. They don’t just show random things.

It's also a great advert for ad-blockers Smile

Mrsemcgregor · 02/08/2018 14:28

Also on my favourites and I am the only one who uses the club card and haven’t needed condoms in 7 years. Even then I got them in Boots or Superdrug!

My favourites on tesco have dog food.
Haven’t got a dog.

Mousefunky · 02/08/2018 14:31

I searched to buy a pregnancy test from Boots online and it brought condoms up as a suggested item Grin.

Some of them are completely random, I really wouldn’t be concerned.

Favourites - Items you have purchased online or in store over the past 13 months.

The only suggested items on mine are items I could substitute for things they no longer stock (so, similar items).

I don’t have any weird or wonderful items on mine.

RockNRollNerd · 02/08/2018 16:03

It may well be that because you are buying lots of baby products they are targeting you for condoms (on the basis you may be breastfeeding and can’t take hormonal bc etc). This is a fascinating article about just how much info supermarkets get from your purchases. The connections are not always obvious ones. www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/02/16/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did/#3cb8f7b86668

RockNRollNerd - thanks for the link, interesting! So basically Tesco are telling me it’s time to have sex again?! Ha ha! This thread could finish with a very happy ending!

Nonsense. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Yes, they do show pretty random things, as well as highly targeted. And just because ads are targeted does not mean they are automatically very accurate or well targeted. You're the naive one if you think its that sophisticated!

RomanyRoots · 02/08/2018 18:05

it isn't a grocery product though Confused, so why would it be there.
It's usually in medical an might show up on an online shop order, but the two depts are different and treated different by pickers.

ParanoidOrSunburnt · 02/08/2018 18:08

IThinkIMadeYouUp hmmm... good point about Durex cashing in in the recall! (I wish Tesco had chucked in some other random items too though!)

Op I don't think you're hard work, it's natural to wonder about these things. I also don't think you have anything to worry about Smile

ParanoidOrSunburnt · 02/08/2018 18:22

Thanks lancelott, that’s nice to hear Blush x

I do find the idea of a cheating man making sure he gets his points when buying the condoms, quite funny lol.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 02/08/2018 19:44

OP did you check the wash bag for the deod?

delphguelph · 02/08/2018 19:46

Search for something eg hummus, naice ham, on the website and then see if it's in your favorites.
