To feel terrified after reading the prepping for Brexit threads?

LittleNapRefuser · 28/07/2018 20:26

I have genuinely cried real tears of fear after reading the threads on prepping for Brexit today. I have a toddler and right now I am terrified of what is to come and their future after all this.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about this in 'real life' because most people I know aren't reading the news or don't seem to care.

Should I be terrified? Should I be scared for my baby's future? Can anyone reassure me or offer me an alternative perspective on all this. I don't want to to put my head in the sand but I feel really afraid.

@ Ifailed
I believe that is what "Operation Stack" is?

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2018 08:59

The weary voice of cynical reason has arrived. Marvellous.

PostNotInHaste · 29/07/2018 09:01

Francine I appreciate you appear to be new to MN but Inigo has already explained quite clearly on this thread what she is worried about. As a Mother of a child who has Type 1 you be able to understand her fears. Go back and read her post.

As I said I have a DH who needs insulin and I’m not worried but I can very clearly see why Inigo is, have some fucking compassion.

To people just joining this thread, there are things most of you can realistically do to put food etc aside for a short term

Yes indeed, just add the following to your Ocado order from now until March

  • Manchego
  • Quince Jam
  • Avocado
  • Artisan Sour Dough bread
  • Fois gra
  • Adult Diapers

I think many people need to be wearing the final item on the above list of essentials THIS MINUTE

minifingerz · 29/07/2018 09:02

Will there be coffee after Brexit?

I may start stockpiling Lavazza.

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2018 09:03

Ah right enough. Not engaging. Now who is being stupid and over the top.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 09:04

@FrancinePefko42 can't afford Ocado. Get your stereotypes right.

InigoMontoyaWillcox · 29/07/2018 09:04

To people still bleating on about "there is insulin available from outside the EU", "you're over-reacting" and that classic "we managed through a World War"!!

You are (willfully?) missing the point!! Yes, insulin is available from elsewhere. Yes, it probably will all get sorted at some point a few months down the line (hopefully?).

I am talking about short term disruption to supply lines, which Brexit will cause. And you might be ok with disruption to supply lines when shops are out of milk and bread for a few weeks cos you've stocked up on baked beans (as the govt are now currently advising). But how is that going to help my son when we've run out of insulin, and all the UK's stock is stuck in a mega jam with all the other chaos? And we won't be the only ones waiting on insulin.

Let me tell you how it works. My son can only go a few hours without insulin before he starts to die. Hours. At the moment we are lucky because we have the NHS and we get insulin every 4 weeks on repeat prescription. But this only just about covers the 4 week period, and I cannot order it early, so that means at some point in the month, we only have a day or 2 worth of insulin left. Now factor in Brexit chaos and no supplies getting in for days, civil unrest when everyone discovers that "oops, we did need to stockpile food after all!". Come on, there was chaos a few months ago when KFC ran out of fucking chicken! You think people are going to be invoking the Blitz spirit?!

People really need to read up on what happened to Argentina. People thought it couldn't happen to them, a rich, educated country.

I really, really hope I am wrong about this, I really do. But this govt has had 2 yrs to get its shit together, and they are still arsing about, proposing things that they were told 2 years ago would not work! I do not have the confidence that they will make sure everything is ok.

So fuck of with telling me I am over-reacting and that we managed 40 odd years ago. Read what we are fucking saying.

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2018 09:05

They're e not actually listening. Don't bother.

PostNotInHaste · 29/07/2018 09:06

Well there are some people full of shit on here Francine, if the cap fits and all that.

So still on script then we’re all middle class, hysterical lefties.

FridayThirteenth · 29/07/2018 09:07

@FrancinePefko42 nobody is saying we will never be able to get insulin again, they are saying we have fragile 'just in time' supply chains, that in the event of no deal could result in delays.

For urgent medicines such as insulin, a delay of even a day could result in shortages that mean life of death for some people.

We're not saying we'll never get it again, but that even short term disruption could have severe consequences.

There is no point in comparing us to countries outside the Eu already, or the UK prior to joining. It's not relevant.

The problem comes with a sudden change from one state to another without any transition or agreements in place.

That's not scaremongering it's facing facts. Agreed?

mrsglowglow · 29/07/2018 09:07

Indigo, your fears for your Son are understandable. No one on this thread can honestly tell you what is going to happen post brexit. Are you a member of Diabetes UK? My husband is and he also has type 1 insulin dependent diabetes and they can give you advice and reassurance.

The government/nhs are quite rightly arranging for stockpiling of medicines but this does not mean the general public should do this.

borntobequiet · 29/07/2018 09:09

I was so sorry to read your OP, I know how I would feel in your circumstances. But you can do something:

  1. Write to your MP via www.writetothem.com It doesn’t need to be long, something similar to your OP would be fine. Make sure to give your full name and address so they can verify that you are a constituent and contact you in return. Remember MPs rely on constituents to get elected so need to take account of what you tell them. They can also put pressure on party leaders and will have some say over the so-called final deal.
  2. Sign the petition at petition.parliament.uk/petitions/223729
WhatIfYouFly · 29/07/2018 09:10

Inigo, I am quite sure that when Brexit happens, should there be any disruption to supply chains then people like your son will be an absolute priority. I am sure that the Government has thought of this and is planning for it behind the scenes..they aren't under any obligation to tell us all about it in minute detail though. You will make yourself ill if you continue to get so angry and extrapolate everything into worst case scenario without any concrete evidence, and what good will that do anyone in your family? There are months to go yet, Nobody has any idea what will happen or be resolved before then.

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2018 09:10

They aren't listening. This isn't a proper discussion. It's all one sided.

FrancinePefko42 · 29/07/2018 09:10

Inigo
My daughter has had Type 1 since 2008. All of the global manufacturers of insulin (Sanofi, Lilly, Novo Nordisk, C P Pharmaceuticals and Aventis) manufacture outside the EU and also supply to countries outside the EU. If , and it is a big IF, we do leave the EU with no deal - we will have time to source from alternative countries. The NHS and the Department of Health have already given the avowed Remain supporting journalist who created he panic about insulin a categoric answer that insulin supplies will be secured.

I hope that goes some way to reassuring you.

FridayThirteenth · 29/07/2018 09:10

Actually I hadn't updated my post and there were loads of more recent posts I missed.

I would advise ignoring anyone who comes on to repeatedly goad and poo poo people's (valid and patiently explained) concerns as they are either

A) not genuine and has another motive
B) a complete idiot/nasty twat as who has that much time and energy to spend deriding other people? Not someone to take any notice of, certainly

newcupcake · 29/07/2018 09:11

I cannot believe the ridiculous hysteria and scaremongering on this thread. Can you not see you are making the situation much much worse than it needs to be by panicking ??

Growingboys · 29/07/2018 09:11

For goodness sake pull yourself together.

We'd never have survived the two World Wars if we'd all been like you.

WhatdoImean · 29/07/2018 09:12

I am really confused by some of the responses here.

Some people are genuinely worried about issues they might face (example:- the Insulin scenario), and people's response is that they are being hysterical? If my partner or DC had a medical situation where lack of a drug would result in a coma then death, I would be all over trying to find out what the options and solutions might be.

It is easy for those not affected to say to someone, "the chances of that happening are 1 in 100! or even 1 in 1,000!! It won't happen I think..." Fine. That is your call - and if you have people in your family in that same situation, and you (and they) choose not to do anything, that is your choice - and I truly hope the "99 in 100" scenario works for you.

However, if my DC had a 1 in 100 chance of dying , I think I might just be a tad concerned.... and have the grace to not comment on running out of coffee when people are concerned for their lives?

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2018 09:14

Proper twat. Embarrassing.

WhatdoImean · 29/07/2018 09:15

Actually... I think for my sanity I had probably best step away from this thread.. the "We'd never have survived two world wars" comment is blood pressure raising.

The world wars were a national emergency. If you are saying that we need to treat brexit as a national emergency, one that we chose to inflict on ourselves (What about all that extra money for the NHS? Where are all these countries desperate to do business with us)...

OK - I need to take a break Smile

Electrascoffee · 29/07/2018 09:16

I'm definitely terrified.

What I'm hoping is that somebody has the balls to say enough is enough, we're not fucking doing this.

There will be more rioting if it happens than if it doesn't happen.

Ifailed · 29/07/2018 09:18

WhatdoImean The current operation stack uses the M20 as a lorry park, with traffic diverted to the A20. The idea is if this becomes full, then the M26 is also closed to traffic. There have been various plans to build a lorry park but of course the government have done nothing about it.
