To think it's not hot at all

I'm here in a blanket in the south west in a 3 story Edwardian and it's cloudy.

I've felt other heatwaves but this one doesn't even register tbh

I love this hot weather and where I am it is a hot 34 degrees. I had to put icy water in my paddling pool earlier. The house is too hot though, I can’t get my bedroom below 29 😭. And I’m glad I’m not working in London today and having to use the tube.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/07/2018 13:59

One or two people have said they wouldn’t want it live in the north because it’s cooler than the south east. Hasn’t been the case since beginning of June up in the north west. We went away to the Lakes on the early May BH weekend and were sitting out on the patio in short sleeves. The previous year we were in fleeces and raincoats.

The weather has been good virtually all the time since then. not great to work in.

And actually I think the keeping windows shut and curtains closed to keep the house cool is a bit of a myth in the U.K. the first thing I do when I come home from work is open them all as the house is like an oven having been shut up all day (even with curtains closed). and it cools the house down a few degrees. I’m off work now and have the windows open, curtains almost shut and it’s quite cool in the house. By that I actually mean “hot but not unbearably so”

The windows shut, curtains closed is Probably good advice on the continent in old houses with thick stone walls and shutters. Not in a modern south-facing house.

Actually Avon I do have a marble slab I use for fudge. It fits in the chest freezer so will be nice and cool. Does that help?

Ooh can I see the rainbow spunge?

@TopShagger
Dressing Gown - I like that alarm clock, where did you get it?

Argos I think but we've had it years so I don't know if they still sell them!

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 14:03

I'm in Northern Ireland, it's nowhere near as hot as the SE of England, but still a lot hotter and dryer than we're used to. Very few places other than supermarkets and cars have air conditioning. We're not used to it being so hot, (compared to our usual cold, blustery drisel). There are a lot of unhappy gingers here atm.

HarshingMyMellow · 26/07/2018 14:04

OP your post really should have read;

I live in a 3 story Edwardian house, it's lovely and cool, even though the temperature outside resembles Satan's arsehole.

Oh, and BTW, I've been to Dubai!

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 14:04

*drizzle (d'oh)

lololove · 26/07/2018 14:04

Just checked the washing in the garden - apparently it's now 32 degrees according to the themometer outside. It can bloody sod off! :(

LemonysSnicket · 26/07/2018 14:10

Well it's 32 and muggy AF in London, everything smells of hot bins and going outside makes me feel like I'm melting...

Ginkypig · 26/07/2018 14:11

I'm pleased for you.

It's currently 27 in my living room and I'm desperately trying to keep my fish tanks cool with fans and open windows so the fish don't die as they are up at 28/29 (they should be 25/26)

I'm a sweaty mess Sad

youknowwherethecityis · 26/07/2018 14:13

Out in our garden an hour ago was 39.1

That's pretty hot! Though indoors it's 'only' 28.5 luckily

BathshebaAndGabriel · 26/07/2018 14:13

Well it’s 33c in east London. It ain’t right, I tell ya.

JacquesHammer · 26/07/2018 14:14

Why does everyone in the Uk open their windows when it is hot?

Depends where you are surely? I live on the side of a moor. Even when it’s really hot there’s likely to be some breeze, creating a through breeze keeps my house cool.

soupforbrains · 26/07/2018 14:15

@Avonandice I completely feel for you. I had a mare a few weeks ago trying to get my lego brinks to set for a cake I was making. couldn't even get them out of the mould without freezing it. took me all bloody night.

@Topshagger you have amused me greatly I applaud your witty piss-taking.

Also special mention to whoever the PP was with the rubbish fan and the comment about a bay farting half a mile down the road. Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 26/07/2018 14:16

I'm in North Essex and it's 32c. So yeah, its hot.

Taffeta · 26/07/2018 14:16

34 and breezy in Kent - fucking gorgeous! 🌞

mmmgoats · 26/07/2018 14:18

I don't understand this post. Of course there aren't consistent temperatures in every place across the UK.
If you'd looked at the MET Office website you'll see the weather warnings that are in place are for specific regions, maybe yours isn't affected.
You say that the heat 'hasn't happened' but it has in some places - our flats are currently 38 degrees inside. In any of the regions where there have been consistent 26+ temperatures the crops are dying, there's hosepipe bans, but of course, that isn't happening.

Some people cope better in the heat than others. Some live in flats, some live in Edwardian houses.
You're saying they shouldn't make a blanket statement about the temperatures, but you're doing just that...

MinesaPinot · 26/07/2018 14:19

33 degrees in the City - I've just walked up from Cheapside to Gracechurch Street and back (about a 10 min walk) and it's really muggy and humid. It's days like these when I am glad to get back into work, if only for the air conditioning in our office.

DH on the other hand is coping with a small desk fan in a very hot clerks room in chambers in the Temple. These old buildings might look very picturesque for the tourists, but they're hell in this weather....

Marmite27 · 26/07/2018 14:25

I’m in Leeds, it’s 28 and cloudy outside, 24 in the living room, probably hotter upstairs, but I can’t be bothered to go check.

I’m wearing shorts and a vest and I’m comfortable. Same for the toddler. The baby is in a romper and coping.

DH is sweating like a pig, I cope with the heat better and acclimatise better. Plus he’s working and I’m on mat leave.

Family rumour says it’s hotter Wakefield way today by at least a degree.

Haberpop · 26/07/2018 14:38

Just put the thermostat in the garden (Suffolk/Norfolk border) for a few minutes, I think 38° is fairly warm even for Europe.

To think it's not hot at all
ILoveMyDressingGown · 26/07/2018 14:45

@Marmite I'm just south of Wakey and it's about the same as where you are. The weather was forecasting thunder and rain but it's now changed its mind and is only suggesting it for later on this evening. I can feel myself actually wilting! The grass is still green though 👍

Jkoakham · 26/07/2018 14:45

None of these garden thermometer readings are accurate if you put them in the sun ffs!

The rest of Europe is already laughing over us and brextit, let's not make them laugh even more with a few days warm weather and people acting as if it's as hot as an oven.

Marmite27 · 26/07/2018 14:46

Oh, it’s just got so dark it’s like the end of the world, and I think I can hear distant thunder. Difficult though over Peter Rabbit and a toddler that’s rattling coins in a money box.

No rain yet though.

It’s my birthday tomorrow. Several years ago my parents house flooded on my birthday. I’m glad it’s not like that this year.

sulflower · 26/07/2018 14:46

It's 67 just now here in Aberdeen which is still very warm

Yes, what a marvellous summer we have had in the far NE, loving it. I feel sorry for all of you living and working in temps in the 30's, I like the heat but not that much unless it's in a tropical paradise with an iced cocktail in my hand. How anyone can say it's normal summer temps is beyond me. The whole country has had high temps, even Scotland which is highly unusual!

LeighaJ · 26/07/2018 14:46

"To think it's not hot at all"

My boobs disagree.
