To think it's not hot at all

I'm here in a blanket in the south west in a 3 story Edwardian and it's cloudy.

I've felt other heatwaves but this one doesn't even register tbh

It's wonderfully cool in our air conditioned Boots, but other than that it's oppressively muggy and hot.

Everyone to the lightning map. Relief on its way for some of us. Real time -

Very hot but with a breeze here in Bath in an old house.

LovelyBath77 · 26/07/2018 17:27

A storm would be great

Weedsnseeds1 · 26/07/2018 17:36

I'm in the South West and it's 29 C, was showing 31C in the car when I went out an hour ago. I'm in a stone cottage built in 1790 ( if the type of house is relevant) and it's too hot in here for the first time ever!
No blanket required.

BackforGood · 26/07/2018 17:38

I have to admit, I've been thinking the same as the OP, this afternoon (I'm in the Midlands).
I've been in the garden for about 3 hours this afternoon and it's been absolutely perfect. A lovely breezy day and what I'd call 'warm' not 'hot' here. Feels like a storm is on the way.
It has been such a gorgeous summer, after a Winter with real proper snow. I'm loving it.
I appreciate weather can be different in different parts of the country, at different heights above sea level, if you are in a City or out in the wilds, etc. unlike a lot of the National media who think we all liv in the SE / London

Iloveantiques · 26/07/2018 17:43

41 degrees in my car earlier...

To think it's not hot at all
SoyDora · 26/07/2018 17:44

A farm near to me had an awful fire earlier today. The ground is just so dry.
But yeah, it’s not that hot.

Perihelion · 26/07/2018 17:47

It's reached 27C in Edinburgh, however Mrsfezzwig this will surely stop and rain and cold will resume next weekend, when the festival starts.

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 17:49

27° in N.I too.

Sandsnake · 26/07/2018 17:51

I can accurately report that central London was hot as balls today.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2018 17:52

So, I tried the not opening the windows thing. But then the Met office told me to stay inside and I nearly died...

The opening the windows at night thing only works if the air outside is appreciably cooler than the air inside, and it isn't!

I am in Bedfordshire. It's 35 degrees. My DF is in Sctoland ;he says it's hot. My MIL came over from Wales today. Says it is hot there.

We are all hot. We have stupid carpets and insulation and none of those roll down blind things they have in Europe. I have air con in my room and it has reduced the temperature to 26.5.

It's HOT. It's BEEN HOT FOR WEEKS. That nice Carol on the BBC says it's hot.

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 17:54

Well, in my part of N.I at least (Co.Down).

Firesuit · 26/07/2018 17:58

Haven't read the thread, just thought that I'd chip in, at just before 6pm the digital thermometer next to my computer is reading 35.0 degrees Celsius.

I'm in London in a room where the south-west facing exterior wall is nearly entirely double-glazed glass. (But half that glass is in windows that are open.)

I've just found out that it is possible to install air conditioning in my flat. Instead of noisy and ugly exterior units, which would not be allowed, I can have a small water-cooled condenser hidden in a cupboard. It would send a bath-full of tap water down the drain for every hour it's on, but I reckon it would be worth it.

Apart from that, does anyone have any ideas for preventing heat gain in this room? Would replacing the double glazing panes with special heat-reflecting glass, or blinds inside the pane, help much? (Probably wouldn't be allowed to put external shades over the window.)

FreshsatsumaforDd · 26/07/2018 17:59

30 degrees here in the house, South East.

To think it's not hot at all
bluebeck · 26/07/2018 18:02

33 degrees here on the beautiful south coast today. Had a lovely day on the beach with my little neices.

I lived in the West Indies for many years and can still understand it is hot for the UK. I absolutely love it Grin

YABU - so it's not hot where you are? OK.

crispysausagerolls · 26/07/2018 18:02

It’s 33 degrees here at 6pm and I’m melting. we are all melting.

Lockheart · 26/07/2018 18:04

I'm also in an Edwardian house. I'm in the top room, I have windows open (blinds closed to keep out the sun) on both sides to get a draft. I have a fan going.

IT IS 33.7 DEGREES IN HERE

IAmMumWho · 26/07/2018 18:05

I'm near Accrington lancs and it's been cloudy no sun for days. Humid yes looks like it's going to rain yes. Definitely not the temperatures the weather man keeps saying

Nodancingshoes · 26/07/2018 18:05

I'm in Somerset and it's been 30 degrees - bloody boiling inside and outside!

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 18:09

The met office website says the highest recorded temp here in N.I was 30.8°, in 1982. Only 3.8° higher than the current temp. I think that record was actually broken a week or two ago.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2018 18:10

The Indian cricket team have refused to play cricket for an extra day in Essex because it is too hot!! They moved hotels after one night because it was too hot for them. The INDIAN cricket teamm ffs. It's HOT.

Perhaps they could come and stay round yours OP? Sounds like you have room on your top floor.

JassyRadlett · 26/07/2018 18:11

Jassy I'm fully aware of city heat, I live in a city and the local paper is going crazy over the supposed heat. It just hasn't happened and sounds all like a media whip up to pretend a few degrees is Armageddon

That’s nice. A big one, like the ones you’re sneering about in the South East? Hugh density? What’s the UHI?

Where I’m standing right now, it’s currently 34’ in the shade. Quite warm for England, wouldn’t you say? It’s actually fine (for me, i love hot weather) because the humidity has dipped to 30%, that will change in the next few hours but the temperature won’t, much.

My son’s south facing bedroom was 29 degrees at bedtime last night. We are lucky to have cooler rooms elsewhere because when we renovated we built for heat as well as cold. Our builders were flummoxed by this, so I’m guessing they generally still build in the same way as the rest of our 1930s house was constructed.

In your clearly expert opinion, what combination of temperature and humidity would you deem objectively ‘hot’? I’m intrigued.

Kool4katz · 26/07/2018 18:12

South West Ireland and it's about 17 degrees and cloudy with patches of heavy rain.
I'm wearing socks and a fleece and will swap the fleece for my mac to go and walk the dog shortly.
I hate really hot weather when you can't sleep at night so I feel for my friends and family back in the UK and I'm very grateful that our mini heatwave seems to be over.

WickedLazy · 26/07/2018 18:14
