to wish my name wouldn't always come up in the baby names threads?

NC for this. My name always comes up in the baby names threads. Always as 'dated' or 'common' or 'chavvy' etc etc. Sick of seeing my name slagged off and I never felt down about it until mn. To the point that I have hidden the baby names threads and never read them, even though we are currently trying to think of a name for DC1. AIBU to think that we don't think of these things when we slag off other people's names on the internet? That people actually have these names? Sad

AhhhhThatsBass · 23/07/2018 23:18

Hmm strikethough fail

KokoandAllBall · 23/07/2018 23:18

Just tell us your name, you'll probably get a raft of comments about how lovely it is! Lily-Mae? Mia? Ruby?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 23/07/2018 23:19

Is it La-a?

ALemonyPea · 23/07/2018 23:19

My guess is Esme. That was a crazy thread.

pingoose · 23/07/2018 23:21

My name always comes up as "not a grown up woman's name". I always wonder how I've made it to my mid-30s with it when I read that.

ScattyCharly · 23/07/2018 23:21

Op your name is alright to be dated as you were given it last century. You aren’t a baby being named this in 2018. Just forget it.

Yellowcrocodile · 23/07/2018 23:22

Can you tell us what it’s like OP? To give us an idea of how sensitive you are being?

For example, if your name is Lexi-Rae or Harper-Blue I can see why you’d be upset by some of the comments on the baby name threads and not want to read them.

If it’s Amelia, Eva or Olivia and the comments are ‘so overused’ type comments, then I think you are being a bit sensitive. People love to take a crack at what’s popular, because it makes them feel important and unique. I’d ignore these comments, the top 20 names are lovely.

Maybe give us a few names that are similar, leaving out your actual name?

AlbertaSimmons · 23/07/2018 23:23

I have a double barrelled name of the sort that is often described on the baby names threads as "chavvy" and even, more than once, "pikey".

Irl however, it rarely gets commented upon other than "that's a pretty name " and it has the advantage of being difficult to date. People often expect me to be much younger than I am.

I agree with a pp - if your name makes you self-conscious, or you just don't like it, then change it. My friend's adult DD recently did just that. She changed one ordinary name for another, because she liked it - say changed Lucy to Kate.

MarthaArthur · 23/07/2018 23:24

The name Gary is about to go extinct with only 4 Gary's born in 2014.

Grassisgreeener · 23/07/2018 23:24

Op sorry you are upset about people slagging off your name, I'm sure it's a lovely name whatever it is and your parents chose it with love.

HildaZelda · 23/07/2018 23:24

I'm going with Sharon.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 23/07/2018 23:24

Ds has a cat name according to a lot of people on mumsnet but the comments don't bother me because I LOVE his name.

Do the comments bother you because you don't like your name?

MarthaArthur · 23/07/2018 23:25

I dont know if my gary fact has cheered you up or not. I also like the name gary.

ALemonyPea · 23/07/2018 23:25

I have a very 80s name. Never hear of anyone under 30 with it. It was an unusual name then though.

WhenTheSharkBites · 23/07/2018 23:25

Ive got a shit name, Michaela. Recently name changed so don't give a fuck.
Nicknames suck for my name and even though I hate it I actually prefer Michaela to any of the nicknames I've collected over the years.

You know there's people out there called Lettife, Kitty and bloody Binky being considered to be upper middle class so I suggest you get the fuck over it dear.

AnkerAlt · 23/07/2018 23:26

I would put it in the same category as Chantelle, Chelsea and Kelsey. Similar type name. It's never bothered me that much but I've never really liked it. I guess mn just made me realise it's not a great name according to most. Not that the three I've mentioned above are names I would describe as awful, I wouldn't, they're just a similar type to mine!

Maybe I am being over sensitive, but I'm just struggling to find a name for DC, worried I'll choose the wrong thing, pregnancy emotions running high. IABU clearly.

I also wince when people say things like:

‘Oh no, don’t use Henry/George/Thomas or Isobel/Lily/Charlotte, they are so boring and overused.
What about Candida/ Genevieve/Rafferty/Horatio?

Because the kids I’ve met called Rafferty/Genevieve tend to be appallingly behaved average children whose parents think they’ve been gifted by angels on winged horseback.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 23/07/2018 23:27

lorelai I have a cat name too!

AfterSchoolWorry · 23/07/2018 23:28

Amy, Keighley, Lauren, Danielle, Hailey, Lindsey, Bianca, Taylor or Kellie

Readyfortheschoolhols · 23/07/2018 23:28

If it helps my name is never seen anywhere!!
Maybe because its bloody awful!!

AnkerAlt · 23/07/2018 23:29

@AfterSchoolWorry what?

OP posts:
Alltheprettyseahorses · 23/07/2018 23:29

I was going to guess Chloe but that's not it. I'll go for Olivia then.
