to wish my name wouldn't always come up in the baby names threads?

NC for this. My name always comes up in the baby names threads. Always as 'dated' or 'common' or 'chavvy' etc etc. Sick of seeing my name slagged off and I never felt down about it until mn. To the point that I have hidden the baby names threads and never read them, even though we are currently trying to think of a name for DC1. AIBU to think that we don't think of these things when we slag off other people's names on the internet? That people actually have these names? Sad

Ha ha! Spare a thought for those parents a few years back who thought that "Isis" would be an interesting and different girl's name.

Until ISIL, Isis was on my longlist of "future DC names", I'm still pissed off. Grin

Fluffyrainbows · 24/07/2018 11:20

I recently saw one of my daughters names on here and it was mentioned in horror! And an absolute 'oh my god you can never use this name....' bizarre as she's 18 and loves it and bar one gp have never had a negative reaction to it.
Baby mane threads are weird because we all have such different tastes. And people are rude. I would personally say if I preferred names but not slate name choices.

Fluffyrainbows · 24/07/2018 11:21

@masktasker I love Isis! I would use it but it doesn't go with our surname at all.

AnyaChristinaEmmanuellaJenkins · 24/07/2018 11:22

found out my name means blowjob or lady bits!!!!

What is your name?!?!?!!!

MsHopey · 24/07/2018 11:22

If people are going to ask opinions of names (you didn't ask, but presumably other people did) people on an anonymous forum are going to be honest.
It's a shame people don't like your name, get over it. It's your name and you liked it until recently.
There's some names I absolutely hate, I would tell people here if they asked, and talk about it with DH. But I wouldn't mention it outside in the real world.

Ilovechocolatebuttons · 24/07/2018 11:28

I have an old fashioned name, born in the 1970's (Victoria), I like it, so that is what matters, but I have seen it slated on MN for being 'old fashioned', 'trying too hard' and 'brash'.

So what, it's my name and I love it, pish to everyone else! I gave it as a middle name to my daughter too.

OftenHangry · 24/07/2018 11:36

Blessings of having an uninteresting foreign name which is in use only in 2 countries😁
On the other hand. If I would want a keychain with my name on it I would have to fly there to get it.

ElenOfTheWays · 24/07/2018 11:41

Ha! You lot don't know you're born. Turns out my full name Christian and Sur is the same as a well known (if you're into that sort of thing) porn star.

Even worse,, in a small profile pic she even looks a bit like me at a glance. Same hair.

I had to go incognito on fb lol.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/07/2018 11:43

My sister has quite an uncommon but not eye-raisingly-so name whereas my siblings have all got popular names

When we were kids my grandma would always buy us personalised stuff and my sister would get her name one or two letters removed. Ie Lauren and Laura

CanineEnigma · 24/07/2018 11:44

I don't think people have ever not criticised names. DS has a fucking ridiculous name - a Scottish spelling with an ambiguous pronunciation. I hate it and wish I hadn't let DH have the final say on it. I wanted Dominic or Joseph. Or at least the anglicised version of the name he wound up with. .

I don't come across many people with my name - but when I do they spell it differently. I used to wish I had been called Melanie or something, but I got over that when I was 18.

BarbiesPinkShoes23 · 24/07/2018 11:46

My name is fairly unusual and generally MN approved. Yet when I was growing up I always wished for a ‘normal’ name like the other girls: Julie, Kirsty, Jennifer or Gemma. I like my name now as it hasn’t dated like the others. I still think Gemma’s a beautiful name though.

MayFayner · 24/07/2018 13:48

As someone upthread pointed out, the first part of OP’s username is an anagram of Karen.

So I reckon it’s Karen Grin

LoisWilkerson1 · 24/07/2018 14:05

Karen is a nice name Smile

KittyMcKitty · 24/07/2018 15:37

MN adores my name - I’ve never liked it, not as a child or adult- don’t like the sound of it spoken and think it looks ugly written.

My children’s names MN describes as over used, wet, boring, dull and unimaginative amongst other things- they, and I love their names.

Daisymalone · 24/07/2018 15:49

My name is a name you always picture a middle aged woman's institute type person with. Or someone's maiden aunt. Never knew a single person with it whilst growing up (early 30s now). Never really got why my parents picked it either. But I couldn't really care less if everyone hates it- it's just a name!!

IsBrexitOverYet · 24/07/2018 16:11

Have you thought about asking your parents why name x is your name? Doing this made me really like my name! X

Sommelierrrr · 24/07/2018 16:14

Sharon?

Tiredtomybones · 24/07/2018 17:52

Annalise?

MissVanjie · 24/07/2018 17:52

I had a friend called Sharon years ago who used to chat blokes up by going 'hi I'm called Sharon but that's not my fault, can I buy you a drink' Grin

Greenyogagirl · 24/07/2018 18:28

Kylie?

Rogersgal7 · 24/07/2018 19:54

Mercedes?

bluebeck · 24/07/2018 20:52

Rogers Grin

I used to know someone called Mercedes who insisted on being called "Murky"

goose1964 · 24/07/2018 20:59

Mine was of an era until the Eastern Europeans arrived, it's quite popular with them so it's no longer dated. I prefer the "new" pronunciation too

waterlego6064 · 25/07/2018 06:14

Missvanjie 😆

steff13 · 25/07/2018 06:29

My name is Stephanie and I don't have BO. I smell like Yellow Diamonds by Versace.

Just out of high school, I worked processing correspondence for an insurance company. One of our policy holders sent in a form showing that he had legally changed his name. I don't remember his given name, but it was something old fashioned but not terrible - think Norman, Irving, something like that. The reason he cited for changing his name was that he had been teased about his name his whole life. The new name he chose? Shadow. Hmm
