To think smoking is out of order...

In a kids' play park.

Adults sat on a bench in the kids' play area, a few metres from kids playing, chain smoking rollies.
I know that realistically it probably won't cause any damage to passing kids, being outside in the open air, but it's just not cool and not okay in my opinion.

Plus I'm pretty sure they just left their tab ends lying on the ground. Nobs. Angry

@Stirner

Go on op, have a fag, it'll help you relax.

Possibly will next time I go out drinking with friends. Nowhere near kids or a kids' playground though, because I'm not a dickhead.

What are you on about Eleven - are you in favour of under 18s smoking or something?

gillybeanz · 24/07/2018 12:11

3 metres is plenty far enough away.
How would you have coped in years gone by when people could smoke anywhere.
This generation is very lucky not to have to breathe in fumes from people smoking indoors.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 24/07/2018 12:16

It’s disgusting smoking around children. And I’m a smoker! My children have never seen me smoke. There’s nothing worse than seeing parents walking along hand in hand with small kids while puffing on a fag.

Horrordoeurvres · 24/07/2018 12:19

I smoke but would never do it in any place near kids, makes me cringe if I see someone smoking near children - I always find a secluded spot to smoke if I'm in public, far away from anyone else and children, if they do end up wandering near me while I'm smoking I make a habit to move away.

No excuse to leave butts laying about as well, plenty of bins around and you can buy little Zip lock bag things now specifically for cigarette butts, once you're done place the butt in the bag, close it over and repeat until you come in contact with a bin. - Side note I am trying to stop also and have reduced my daily smoking massively, bloody hard though Sad

MorrisZapp · 24/07/2018 12:25

Utterly bogging. Some people have no idea how to behave in public.

sunnnyscotland · 24/07/2018 13:20

It's a manky thing to do. I survived the 70's and 80's smoking but it was horrible and I'm really glad that my dc aren't subjected to the same thing, improvements are possible.

runningkeenster · 24/07/2018 13:34

I'd never want to return to the 70s and 80s, it was horrible. The idea of having to get on a plane or train with a so-called smoking area - or have offices with smokers or when you had to wash your hair after you'd been to the pub (even into the 90s).

Smoking is anti-social and horrible as well as being a massive threat to your health. I simply cannot understand why anyone under the age of about 35 does it, especially women who usually care more than men about the way they look (and smell). Aging skin, yellow teeth and stinky breath. Well, what's not to like?

And yes, doing it in a kids' park sets a very bad example.

BunsOfAnarchy · 24/07/2018 13:36

Nope. Not bothered by this. Its open air.

I tell you where i have the problem. My local hospital. There is a zebra crossing in front that leads from the entrance to the smoking shelter. So what, 5 metres away?
No. The world and his dog smoke directly in front of the doors. It wafts into the hospital. They cant walk the 6 steps to the smoking shelter. That a piss take.

TurquoiseButterfly19 · 24/07/2018 13:41

Its bang out of order. Parks where i live are no smoking areas and so are outside the school gates. Mingers.

Raven88 · 24/07/2018 13:45

I agree it's out of order I used to be a smoker and I switched to vaping. But I still wouldn't do it in a play park. Any where designed for kids should be a smoke free zone.

FizzForLunch · 24/07/2018 14:01

Smoking is rank and I don't want it anywhere near me or my kids so I totally agree with you.

likeacrow · 24/07/2018 14:15

@zzzzz

If they have to put up signs there must be a fair few people who think it’s ok.

"They" also have to put up signs telling people not to litter or leave dog shit lying around. A fair few people think that's okay too. It's not.

There are signs in our park too, but nobody takes any notice of them as it's lawful to smoke outside.
I won't purposefully go out of my way to smoke in front of kids, but if I've already lit it it's tough if mum doesn't like it.
If it's lit, I will avoid going near children might be, like the playground, but just walking round the park, they can avoid me.

YANBU at all and don't pay attention to the addicts justifying their bad behaviour. Obviously it's wrong.

likeacrow · 24/07/2018 17:33

@zzzzz The objections are that it stinks, children shouldn't have to breathe in fag smoke, children's play areas shouldn't be littered with fag ends and it's setting a bad example. So, multiple.

I also believe littering, swearing and dog shit in children's playparks is not okay.

Why can't kids have their own child friendly-area? There's the whole rest of the park for adults to smoke in. I'm specifically talking about kids' play areas.

Playgrounds are not just for children???

blueskiesandforests · 24/07/2018 18:23

zzzzzz most playgrounds are just for children supervised where appropriate by adults. Adult suitable ones aimed at adults with special needs exist and there should be more of them, but the facilities described throughout the thread are children's play areas. Generally they have age restrictions on the signs, often a maximum age of 12 years old on the equipment.

FranticallyPeaceful · 24/07/2018 18:26

Smoke would rapidly kill my middle child, so yeah

Playgrounds are not just for children

Riiight...

These are kids' play areas. For kids. Adults obviously have to be there to supervise of course.

Feel like you're going out of your way to completely miss the point!

Playgrounds are not just for children This is the same as our area. Some of the parks have play equipment and those outdoor exercise machines. I don't think they could be operated by a child tbh
